Fantasy Romance Teens & Young Adult

“Do I have to?”

The room was wide and circular, with no obvious walls or door, but it appeared white, with a yellow glow. The crescent-shaped panel of wolves stared down at the young, bright cyan wolf that stared back up at them with a frightened demeanor.

“Aizza, my love, you must go. If we don’t get rid of him..” a yellow wolf with a sun on her forehead spoke in reply, stern but gentle. Her name was Elorda, and she was the wolf Sun goddess.

The navy blue-grey wolf with a silver moon on his forehead, who was next to Elorda, frowned at Aizza. “Why are you resistant to going?”

“I- I just- I’ve never been there before, Callisto,” Aizza mumbled to the wolf Moon god. “I’m a little scared, honestly.”

Three other wolves sat at the panel, watching Aizza with some curiosity.

The silver-blue with a dark grey water droplet on her head, the Water goddess, Ren.

The light grey wolf with a small dark grey wind gust on his forehead, the Wind god, Sota.

And finally, the dark brown wolf with a green tree on her forehead, Ione, the Earth goddess.

Aizza whined again. “Come on, Callisto, Elorda! Let me stay!”

“In order to save the world, you need to go to the Mortal Realm!” Elorda insisted exasperatedly.

“Let’s relax here, she’s not really going to save the world, El,” Callisto cut in dryly. “But it is important that she must go.”

Ren, Sota, and Ione all nodded in agreement.

“I-” Aizza whined. “Fine.”

The panel nodded approvingly. “Thank you for your service,” they spoke in unison.

Aizza closed her eyes without speaking and faded away, out of the room.

***

Aizza’s fur was transformed to a light silver-grey, and her eyes were now leaf green. She looked around the forest clearing she landed in, feeling the soft, springy grass under her paws. She heard birds singing and watched the clouds above for a few seconds before remembering her mission.

Aizza padded down a trail deeper into the birch woods. She remembered what Elorda had told her before, that she would find her target in a star-shaped clearing by a spring. She quickened her pace, anticipating coming across it, and sighed in relief when she finally saw it.

A dark grey wolf with yellow eyes was sniffing along the corner of his den, but he glanced up suddenly as Aizza padded into the clearing.

“Who are you?” he asked, eyes wide.

“I could ask you the same thing.” Aizza smiled flirtatiously.

“Well… I’m Coro. Where did you even come from?”

Aizza’s smile faded to a slight smirk. “The stars. I’m Aizza.”

“You came from the stars?” Coro sounded disbelieving, but interested. He turned fully to her as his ear twitched.

“That’s what I said.”

***

“So, why are you here, Aizza?”

The sun was setting, leaving the star-shaped clearing looking like it was on fire. They had walked together all evening in circles around the clearing. Coro was very interested in his mysterious visitor. They stopped in front of his den, with Aizza giving him a confused expression.

“What do you mean?” she asked.

Coro smiled playfully. “An angel fell out of the sky just for me. Can’t I ask why she fell?”

“I-” Aizza’s voice dropped. I was supposed to kill you, her mind screamed. “I didn’t fall from the sky, Coro, and I’m most certainly not an angel.”

Coro’s playful smile didn’t fade. “Well, however you got here, I’m thankful.” he licked her cheek. “Do you have a den?”

This time, she smiled back. “I have a place.”

Coro nodded. “Goodnight.”

Aizza dipped her head and padded out of the clearing. She laid down under a tree, inside a hollow, and tucked her head onto her paws. She squeezed her eyes shut, tears slipping out nevertheless. Your assignment- collect and kill Coro of the Birch. Only then will you officiate your role of the goddess of Life and Death.

Aizza tucked a paw over her muzzle to stifle a sob. She couldn’t do it. Even after just one day with him, she knew she wouldn’t be able to do it. She would be betraying the Panel of gods, but if it meant sparing his life… who cared about becoming a goddess?

***

Another week with Coro.

He just wasn’t killable.

Aizza’s heart sang whenever she was with him, and he had begun to let her sleep in his den, cuddled up by his back. But she couldn’t sleep one night- the deadline for Coro’s death was coming up for her.

“You haven’t done it yet.”

The den was dark. Aizza’s head jerked upward in fright, but relaxed slightly at the sight of the grey-blue Callisto.

“No, I haven’t.” Aizza sighed.

Callisto raised an eyebrow. He wasn’t going to yell at her- he had always been fair. “Why?”

Aizza met his calm, silver eyes. “I love him, Callisto. Too much.”

Callisto sighed slightly. “Love always gets in the way in these situations. Yet I am not against it.”

Aizza gave him a confused look as his mouth split into a slight smirk. “Maybe Elorda should rethink your title, Aizza. As the goddess of love, maybe?”

Aizza grinned. “Thank you, Cal.”

“Reveal yourself tomorrow. We will welcome you.” Callisto winked. “Now sleep in peace.”

He faded away, and the darkness of the den returned. Aizza sighed in relief and closed her eyes.

***

“Coro?”

“I’m awake, Aiz.” Coro yawned widely, stretching his legs as he stood. Aizza stood in front of him, her eyes wide and expectant.

“Is there something wrong?” he asked.

“I was sent by the stars, Coro. By the Panel of gods.” Aizza’s voice was calm, collected. “They sent me here to kill you, so I could claim my title as the goddess of Life and Death.”

Coro gasped slightly and took a step back. “So- wait, so you’re betraying me?” he pleaded. “Aiz, I-”

“Coro, I’m not going to kill you. I’m still going to become a goddess, just not the goddess of Life and Death.”

“Then what will you be?” he trembled slightly.

“The goddess of Love.” Aizza smiled gently.

Coro’s eyes narrowed slightly, and a tear slipped down his cheek. “And what of me?” he whispered. “Did you just lead me along, all this time, so you could leave me here?”

“Coro, I-” Aizza’s voice dropped. She hadn’t thought that far ahead- what was Callisto thinking? She couldn’t leave him behind! “Coro, we’re going to have to run.”

Coro cocked his head in surprise. “From the Panel of gods? You’ve got to be joking.”

“I love you,” Aizza whispered. “Why would I lie?”

Coro’s face sank, his eyes deep. “I love you too,” he whispered.

They rushed to each other, pressing their noses and foreheads together.

“Wait, Aizza?” Coro gasped after a second, eyes wide. “What’s going on?”

A ball of golden light had wrapped itself around them, swallowing them and holding them gently in midair, above the trees.

“Is this your power?” Coro demanded, eyes wide and scared, his tail twitching nervously.

“No! I- I don’t have my powers yet!” Aizza yelped over the rising wind. “This isn’t me, I swear!”

Just then, there was a loud POP! They dropped to their paws unceremoniously in the large, slightly glowing yellow room, the Panel seated in front of them.

“Aizza, goddess of Love.” Elorda stood, smiling. “Welcome.”

“Coro, god of Soldiers.” Callisto stood up beside Elorda. “Welcome to you.”

With a blink of Elorda’s eyes, the two mates were immediately transformed. The greyness of their fur faded away, replaced with cyan for Aizza and midnight black for Coro. On her forehead, there was now a light colored sea green heart, and on his there was a long light grey sword.

“Wait- you mean, we’re on the Panel? Together?” Aizza breathed.

“We couldn’t leave you alone, could we?” Elorda’s mouth curled into a smile. “Welcome to the Panel.”

Suddenly, the lights flickered dark, and all went black.

My daughter has a German shepherd and he’s staring at me as I read this story so that’s all I can think of when I read this story. This is a genre I’m not used too. I’ll read the next part and see where it goes. Robert

I generally find furry stories annoying, but this one had some interesting, original twists, and I was able to forget the other stuff I read. The only real problem I had with it was that you gave everyone on the panel names when they're not important to the story. Streamlining those sections to focus on the hero, making the gods and stuff more vague(nameless or mysterious) and impersonal will make it more exciting. Still, I like the romantic story and how it got resolved at the end

Hi, Megan! Aw, my heart melted at the relationship between Aizza and Coro (great names, by the way). They were adorable together, and I'm so glad that the other gods and goddesses let them stay together. Also, I genuinely enjoyed the idea of wolf gods and goddesses. Fantastico! Your bestie, Brooke D.

Lovely! I loved the wolf gods, and their descriptions. This gave off a very mystic feel which I enjoyed. The descriptions were also pretty cool and the story flowed! Ps. Mind reading my latest story?

This is awesome, and I love the spirits of the wolves. It's not often that the authorities in a story are nice and good. I really loved this story, but felt we didn't explore their relationship, so maybe a little more of the bonding. Could you check out my submission for this prompt?

Megan! ALWAYS tell me when you make a new story, I will always be up to reading it!! This was amazing! The idea of wolves is super creative, and the dialogue really adds to the character's personalities! This is probably one of the most beautiful romance-type stories I have ever read, it's so full of heart, and I truly love it! This would be in my Top 10 List of My Favorite Reedsy Stories (if I made one, which I totally should!) I ship Coro and Aizza so hard! Great work!
