Thriller Fiction Bedtime

August 14, 2019.

I hurriedly woke up, relieved to find that the danger wasn’t real; glad that it was just another one of my crazy dreams. I kept on breathing heavily, as the dreaded images of my nightmare started to disappear. I felt cold sweat pouring down my face, and my hands shaking. I scanned the room around me. Of course, nothing was out of place and all my belongings were just where I left them the last time I used them.Β

However, something was a little strange. When I went to turn on my bedside lamp to start writing about the dream I just had in my dream journal, there was no lightbulb inside. I could have sworn that I had just used that lamp last night and nothing was wrong with it. I opened my drawer and took out my phone. I checked the time, It was still 3:46 a.m. I turned on the flashlight and started writing...Β My dream started with me lying in bed, trying to fall asleep. Just then, I heard a huge slam downstairs. I was scared, really scared. But went down to make sure nothing was wrong. The next thing I knew, someone was standing in my doorway. His face was covered with a hood and ski mask, he was clutching a knife in one hand and an empty bag in the other. He kept on screaming "Don't move. Stay where you are." I was paralyzed in fear and tried to yell for help, but nothing came out of me. All I could do was stand there, and watch as he tore through my bedroom, opening every drawer and every box in hopes of finding something valuable. He threw everything on the ground, knocked over my dresser, flipped my desk, and tore the TV from the wall. While he was running out of my room, his foot caught on the wire of my bedside lamp and it crashed to the ground, leaving the glasses of the lightbulb shattered all over the floor.

August 15, 2019.

I woke up, sweating and panting. I just had another awful nightmare...Tonight’s dream took place in my room again. I was sitting on my bed and was working on a project, when I got the feeling I was being watched. I started looking around my room, and peeked outside my window, but nothing. I went back to work only to hear footsteps outside my bedroom door a few seconds later. I swung open the door ready to attack, but again, there was nothing there. But just as soon as I sat down to complete my work for the third time, I heard something in my closet. It sounded like someone was inside, clicking a ballpoint pen over and over and over and over again, I slowly walked over to my closet, and as soon as I reached out to open the door, I jolted awake.

I’m starting to think I need to see someone about these dreams. I’m not the one to get scared, but I am not enjoying losing all of this sleep.

This may be my dream journal, but something happened that I don’t feel like I can talk to anyone about, so I am just going to write it down here.

This morning, while I was getting dressed for school, I noticed something on the ground near my closet. A ballpoint pen.Β

Ok. I know there is some logical explanation for this, and it's probably not such a big deal. But, all I can think about is my dream from last night. The part where I heard something in the closet, it sounded like someone was clicking a ballpoint pen over and over again? Now that I think about it, I have never seen this pen before. It's definitely not mine, and how would a pen that wasn't mine get on the floor near my closet?

No, no, no. What am I thinking? Of course, this doesn’t mean anything! Losing all of this sleep is probably just making me paranoid about things.

I seriously cannot believe this. It won’t stop happening. I got another nightmare, and I don't know what to do anymore. Tonight's was by far the most extreme, and I don’t think I'll be able to get some proper sleep until I get some serious help about these nightmares...This dream started with me in my room, where they all start. I was having a relaxing night, drinking some hot tea, listening to some calm music, and lounging in my comfiest clothes. But as soon as I started to rest my eyes, I saw a shadow running out of my room. I quickly stood up from my chair and went to catch him, but accidentally pushed over a candle into my pile of laundry. The fire was spreading quickly and I didn't know how to stop it. The flames grew taller and spread wider, covering my door, and not letting me escape. Since I lived on the second floor, jumping down from the window wasn't a very safe choice. But just then again, I didn't have a choice. I grabbed the water bottle on my nightstand and began dumping the water everywhere I could. The bottle emptied faster than what felt less than a few seconds. I started jumping and screaming, and had the window open. But the screen would not just come off. It was somehow stuck to the window, blocking me from my only escape. I began coughing from the smoke and I could hardly see. Finally, I gave up on the thought of even escaping and fell to the ground.Β Just then, I woke up. I was burning alive, sweating profusely in real life. Now, this is where things got weird…once again. I wanted to drink some water to calm myself down after this dreadful nightmare, but as I reached for the bottle of water on my bedside table...It was empty. Which was impossible! Before bed, I grabbed a brand new bottle of water and set it on my bedside table. I fell asleep, had a nightmare where I used that water bottle to put out a fire, and now I wake up and it is empty in real life?

How does this keep happening? The things that are happening in my nightmares are taking place in real life too, but only partly. The lamp, the ballpoint pen, and the water. That’s it. Something was definitely wrong with me. I have lost it. There is no other explanation. I can't keep on writing in this dream journal, I'm going to try out some good therapy instead.

OOO! Scary story! Just in time for Halloween! I like this! (One note on August 16, did you mean to say "got a nightmare" or "had a nightmare"? ) It is freaky how these things are happening in real life - when she found that pen on her floor I got goosebumps! Well written spooky story! :)

Thanks so much, that means a lot to me! πŸ’— And, I'm pretty sure that I meant to say "had a nightmare" but wrote "got a nightmare". Lol!

Hi Akshara, This story has some good spooky parts. For example: When I went to turn on my bedside lamp to start writing about the dream I just had in my dream journal, there was no lightbulb inside. And this: I saw a shadow running out of my room. You have made this reader feel the chill of a scary story! My one suggestion is to maybe develop the ending a little more. After such a build up we expect something unexpected to happen in the end. Nice work!

That is true, I should have probably added something unexpected but I thought a simple ending would do good. Thanks for the critique, Cathryn! :)
