Tw: blood, guns

I heard the screams. They came from the house next door, Josie's house. My everything.

I ran outside only to be met with a dozen kids, faces turned brown with chocolate. I pushed past them. Only now am I regretting that I didn't give them candy. Josie was worth more than all the Hershey's chocolate in the world.

I cleared the hedge that Josie and I would use to practice for the 100m hurdles before we got cut from the high school track team.

I was standing on her porch raising my hand to knock on her door

I saw the blood in the form of hand prints on the window. Must be a Halloween decoration. But no, it was dripping, like horrible, red rain, down the window pane.

I puked on Josie's porch, there were chunks of flesh on the window. Whose body it came from? I didn't want to know.

I stepped over my dinner and opened the door. I guess it wasn’t locked. Wait a minute was she expecting visitors?

I pulled the gun from my waistband. I aimed it at the inky blackness.

I stepped inside the house and gagged at the smell. Blood. Was. Everywhere. But the source of it? Nowhere to be found

I found the bones.

Times up

Gunshots ripped through the blackness and they certainly weren’t mine. I dropped to the floor intent on keeping my head on my neck at the moment. Glass shattered all around me and a square box clattered to the floor. I grabbed it and ran, sending return fire into the house as I flew over my puke, off the porch, past the blood, over the hedge, around the trick or treaters and into my house. I tucked my gun back into my waist band that was covered in glass shards and blood. Only two people knew I had the firearm with me at all times and that was Josie and her boss. My badge was still on the table for all to see, I grabbed it and not a moment too soon. My parents walked in dressed up. That's uncommon. “Hey pumpkin pie” My dad says with a chuckle. “Nice Halloween costume” my mom points out. “I thought you were too old to go trick or treating.”

“Oh you know I wanted to get one last year before I go to college” I said with my most convincing smile. The gun was digging into my back and I was desperate to get my parents out of the house and away from the danger that I caused. But first I had to ask the pressing question. ¨Have either of you seen Josie? She was supposed to meet me outside ten minutes ago¨ I smiled into the lie. My father raised an eyebrow

¨Who?¨

¨Josie she's my girlfrie- I mean my coworker¨ Get yourself together, you've been trained for this, what is wrong with you. ¨Never mind shes probably just running late¨

¨Alright then, but when we get back I want to know more about this girl ive never heard of.¨

¨Dad, Im 17 years old, go enjoy your night¨

¨Very well pumpkin, come on Martha.”

The screen door shut behind them and I let out a sigh of relief.

“I need to get out of here”

My head was screaming. I needed to get to HQ so Ross could run a diagnostic on the box. It was too dangerous to open it here. I went to my room. The leather bag I took to work was on the floor, I grabbed it and crossed the room to my closet. The door rolled open revealing my collection of Magic Tree House books and Tom Clancy alike. (Hey I get attached to things). I went down the line of my ridiculous collection of the works of Mary Pope Osborn. There it was, Revolutionary War on Wednesday. I pulled the book out of the shelf. To anyone looking in, it would seem I was a reminiscing teen wanting to recall my adventures with Jack and Annie. But what happened next is not what normal teens do. Gears shifted into place and before my eyes the bookshelf slowly turned revealing my life, The life that I prefer to keep secret. Or for that matter, I have to keep a secret. Because like they say in the movies if you found out about me, I would have to kill you. The bookshelf stopped moving with a clank and blue LED lights shone brightly displaying a variety of knives, a couple pistols, and an AK-47. I grabbed a knife, slid the sheath over it and tossed it into the bag. The knife was joined by a dozen mags for my pistol. I pulled the duffel over my shoulder and reloaded my gun before shoving it back into my waistband. Before leaving my room I grabbed the keys to my jeep and pulled the lever to set the bookshelf back into place. I dashed downstairs and kicked the screen door open, not even bothering to use my hands. Darkness had fallen like a black sheet over everything but the porch that was illuminated by an ever dimming light. In the flickering light I could just make out tiny snowflakes lazily drifting to the ground. Snow on Halloween? What is it, Winter now? Crazy day. I made my way through the darkness and after that it just became a blur. Somehow I managed to get to HQ without crashing into any trick-or-treaters seeking refuge from the steadily growing storm. I pulled my jeep into a parking spot and made my way to the entrance. The heavily oiled doors swung open sporting the words CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY. Oh I'm sorry, did I not mention I'm a 17 year old CIA agent? My bad. I sprinted to the lab and found Ross in a lab coat, as always. “Ross” I yelled breathlessly. They looked up from a bunch of test tubes, from what I could tell it was probably a cure for cancer. A smile spread across their face and they ran to meet me.

“Hey!” they said looking up at me trying to figure out what was going on.

“It's Josie,” I said almost inaudibly. Ross didn’t need any more explanation. Whatever goes on in their insanely smart brain can understand, and comprehend a situation in like, two words.

“Do you have anything I can work off of?” They ask me, all business.

“You know it” I wink at them trying to lighten the grim mood. They popped open the box and we peered inside. Inside the box was a single note.

If you are reading this I am long gone, Don't try and follow me. These people are what's best for me. Forget me and it will be best for both of us. Goodbye Eve.

I stood there for a second or two, shocked. “How do they know my name?” I demanded. Ross was at a loss for words for once in their life and just stood there, dumbfounded.

“ROSS!” Before they could utter a reply a man pushed open the doors to the lab. I hadn’t seen him before which was weird because I knew almost everyone here through Josie.

“They've found someone in the snow” he said looking from me to Ross. “The agents say it's one of our one.” With those words I took off, knocking the man to the ground and ignoring Ross screaming to stop. I ran to the lobby and spotted red and blue flashing lights from the hill above HQ. The ambulance was stuck in the snow, it would never make it down here in the storm. I pushed past the massive crowd of agents that was gathering at the lobby to get a look at the person who was out of the snow and now on the lobby floor getting medical attention. I threw elbows left and right trying to get a glimpse of who was on the floor. I finally got to the front of the mob and the person on the floor made my heart stop. It was Josie. I ran over to her but I didn't know I was even moving. She was pale, she seemed too pale to even have a sliver of life still in her. My body went numb but somehow my brain was still working, processing too many things at one time. She still looked like Josie with the same eyes, lips, body, and hair that I knew so well. Wait. Her hair. I leaned past Josie and punched the guy who was giving her CPR. He fell to the floor slumping over himself like a doll. The crowd was pushing towards me and I didn't have much time. I had to be right. I had to be. I turned Josie over and flipped her knotted hair over her head so it was covering her face. There it wasn't. The identical spot that we both have on the bottom left side of our head. It's not more than a square inch but I would know it better than anyone. In elementary school I was always teased for having a bald spot on the bottom left corner of my head, so when Josie and I became friends she shaved that spot on her head too. It's become kind of a ritual for us and we still do it to this day. I was completely convinced that the person on the floor wasn't Josie. I reached to the back of her neck but someone grabbed me by the collar and started pulling me back into the crowd. I scrambled against the grip and grabbed at Josie finally sinking my hand into the thing I was looking for.

As Ross pulled me, dragging me back while I was struggling to keep a hold of “Josie”. My grip was just about to slip off of her. The mask suddenly came flying back and hit Ross in the face. Their grip on me dropped and they went to examine the mask on the ground, the mask with Josie’s face on it. “It wasn't her,” I whispered to Ross. They nodded with understanding and helped me up off the floor. I looked behind me but I couldn't see the person who was behind the mask. Once again I pushed through the crowd and I ran back to the lab with Ross in tow. “I don't understand,” I said to Ross who was running a DNA test on the mask. I was desperate for results and was pacing back and forth across the lab. After almost fifteen minutes Ross looked up for the machine they were working at. I could just make out the tears that were starting to form in their eyes.

“I'm sorry Eve” They said with a sob. Dammit. I spun away from my sobbing friend and smashed some test tubes with my fist. “I won’t stop,” I whispered through gritted teeth. “I won't stop until I find you Josie.” The doors to the lab swung open and I whirled around. There she was. Josie. Looking never more alive. Her lips twisted into a smile and I could just make out the square inch of bare scalp below the adorable bun that rested on her lopsided on her head.

“Hey Eve” she said crossing the room to me. “Congratulations you passed the test.”

It’s a twisted test to put her through. That girl is going to need therapy for that nonsense. New take on the ‘it was all a dream’ ending. I liked the fast pace of the beginning which was helped by the small paragraphs. The bigger chunk or text at the end was harder to read.
