James looked out the window and saw there was close to a foot of snow on the ground.

“Thank God we moved into this house a week ago,” he muttered.  “And take a couple of weeks off from work.”

It was never a fun time for him when it snowed around here, since he had to drive a little over twenty miles to work on roads this state did a poor job in clearing.

“We moved in just in time,” a beautiful voice spoke behind him.

James turned around to glance upon a beauty with long, red hair, and a smile that melted anyone in a sour mood.  Renea is one he has known for a very long time, but finally tied the knot a couple of months ago.

“I was just thinking such a thing,” he told her as he went over and gave her a kiss.  “And glad I’m not working.”

“Yes.  The snow will probably be gone by the time you go back,” she said.

“One thing I love about this state.  The snow quickly turns to rain and takes the snow away.”

Renea went over to the window and looked at the winter wonderland.

“It seemed like many years have gone by since I saw such a sight like this in the neighborhood,” she said.

Both of them were quite young when they lived in this neighborhood.  Renea lived in a house near the beginning of the long, straight road.  James lived six houses down from the one they now lived in.  Once they started looking for homes, it didn’t take long at all since James parent’s knew of friends selling their house in the old neighborhood.  Both were excited about moving into their neighborhood they were kids in.  Many fond memories of the place.  So much laughter and few tears.

“Do you remember what you did the last time it snowed this much in this neighborhood?” asked Renea as she turned to him with a smirk.

James had to ponder for a bit.  He remembers having to shovel the driveway all the time.  He built quite a few snow families, and once in a while a snow fort to have a snow fight with his younger brother or friends.  Then the funnest part came to mind that brought a wide grin to his face.

“Sledding down the hill,” he replied.

“I had some of the funnest days on that hill,” she said.  “Going down in an inner tube most of the time.  Even a garbage bag a few times that gave me a sore butt.”

The both of them chuckled.

“I had many of the same experiences,” said James.  “The most terrifying is when I went down on Steve’s sled.  It’s the fastest I ever went, thinking I was going to crash anytime.  There were close calls into running into other kids.”

“I remember hitting that poor girl as I went down in an inner tube,” Renea reminisced.  “She flew over my head and down onto the ground.  I could hear her crying as I went down the last part of the hill.  I went back up to her as her parents consoled her and told her I was sorry.  I let her ride on my inner tube twice.”

“Do you remember those two bullies, Mike and Dave?” asked James with a nod from Renea.  “They were calling my brother names and pushed him into the snow.”

“They were a couple of creeps.”

“We got our revenge,” said James with a smile.  “The two bullies went down before us one time.  We took aim and went down in our inner tubes.  We took both of them out.  Once we got to the bottom, we ran the rest of the way home.”

“They deserved it.”

“I believe I packed up your red, plastic sled,” said James.

Renea looked at James with a questioning look, then back to the front window, then back to James.

“You want to go down the hill?” she asked James.

“Just like old times,” he said with a smile.

“I don’t think we have anything else to do today,” she said.

“Just a couple of errands in town, but we aren’t doing it today in this weather,” remarked James.  “I say let’s go have some fun.”

“I’m not sure my body will do well,” she said with a laugh.

“We will probably be sore tomorrow, but will have fun today.  Also have some wonderful memories.”

“Let’s have some lunch first, then we will get ready,” she said, heading to the kitchen.

“Sounds good to me.”

The two had a sandwich and chips as they talked about memories of the hill and other adventures in the snow.

“Let me check the garage before we get ready,” said James.  “I think I know where the sled is stored.”

“I will clean-up.”

James went into the garage, and it didn’t take him long to find the sled.

“We are hitting the hill!” he called out to his wife as he came from the garage.

“Let’s suit up,” she said as she entered the room, excitement in her eyes.

The two went and put warmer clothes on, then put on a warm coat, hat, gloves, and boots on.

“I believe we are ready to go,” said James.

“Let me grab a couple of small waters,” said Renea.  “We will probably need some going up the hill.”

Soon they were ready, and they went out the door with excitement.  Many years have passed since the two stepped out the door to head to the hill.

“Not too busy,” said James as he looked toward the hill.

There were a few kids and adults already on the hill, heading up, sliding down, or just standing there and watching.

“Let’s go have some fun,” said Renea.

The two were glad they lived much closer to the hill as they trudged through the snow.  They could hear the young and the adults screaming and laughing as they went down the hill.  There was no age limit here.  There was no cost here.  People are free to have fun in the snow.

James and Renea climbed the hill, having to stop off and on.

“I think we need to walk up this hill more often,” said James, huffing away.

Renea just chuckled.

They went about halfway up and decided they would start there.  The two squeezed onto the sled and James used his hands to push off.  They slowly moved at first, but quickly picked up speed.  Their laughter changed to screaming back to laughter.  When they came to a stop they stood up, looked at each other, and gave each other a hug.

“I forgot how fun that was,” said Renea.

“Way overdue,” said James.

The two went up again and again.  Laughing as they watched others go down.  Laughing as they went down.  It was like a burst of energy as they climbed up many times.  For their final sledding they went to the top, and went down, screaming all the way.  They actually stopped near to home.

“That was quite the experience,” said James.

“We should do it more often,” said Renea.

The two went home and took their wet clothes off.  It wasn’t long after they sat down the two of them took a nap.

Very sweet story. I like the warm tone. You also do a good job of conveying the bond between your main characters. If I had one suggestion, I think a lot of your dialogue could be shortened. Some of it is needlessly wordy. I chose this prompt too. I hope you'll consider giving me some feedback on my story, "Sledding."
