Contemporary Drama Sad

“But, is he a bad husband?”

“No, in fact, he’s a loving husband who pays attention to details… going out, flowers, chocolate, trips, etc.”, Daisy clarified.

“A bad father to your 2 daughters, maybe?

“He’s just… excellent! He is always playful with them and never, ever, mistreats them!”, Daisy explained.

“Is he a good…?”

“Provider? He cares about my needs and my daughters’ every need.”, Daisy interrupted by knowing what her best friend, Martha, was going to ask.

“Mmm… I understand, I really do.”

“I’m so glad you do. I just want to taste life. I don’t think I am still in love with him.”, Daisy told her best friend, released.

“Well, after 12 years of a happy marriage, you should know by now if you love him or if you don’t. Besides, as your best friend, I can tell YOU that you told ME the same thing before…”

“This time is different! You know, it’s funny! When I first met John, as my coworker in this new company, I didn’t pay much attention since I was a happily married woman. And, when John started to flirt, it didn’t feel right, but I didn’t feel insulted by it; especially because he was married, too. Then I got it! I understood.”, Daisy said.

“What?”

“I’ve been thinking I deserve more, much more. It’s just not fair!”, Daisy added.

Daisy’s friends looked at each other.

“I guess you’re right.”

“Of course! That’s why I stopped feeling guilty every time I slept with John and not my husband.”, Daisy said.

“So, what are you gonna do? You know, to push your husband away…”

“I’ve been thinking of going to the Police and report him as a psychological abuse case.”, Daisy told them her plan.

“Because you cannot expose your kind husband as an aggressive one, right?”

“You’re right. There are no physical signs! I wouldn’t be able to find any proof of it. I just want him to be out of the map, my life. I need my space!”, Daisy explained those facts.

“You know what?”, another friend joined the conversation.

“What?”

“As a lawyer myself, I recommend visiting a psychologist or psychiatrist once or twice, so you can establish a pattern of violence, for you to use it against him whenever the time comes. Then you will have your evidence, the doctor will believe you… if you say he yells at you or insults you somehow.”

“You know what? That’s an excellent tip! He’s a nice husband, you know that, but a woman doesn’t need to prove anything… just need to tell the Police or Court he does, they’d take care of that. I’ll do it as soon as possible.”, Daisy said gladly.

And that’s the reason one day, without knowing why, Harry, Daisy’s husband, heard the doorbell ringing and opened the front door to find out that there were 2 police officers to guard him out of his home. The house he built with his own hands for his most precious treasure: his wife and daughters. Harry didn’t have a chance to ask or clarify things. It was a Court order. The officers just explained Harry had 15 minutes to take his clothes and some other personal stuff to leave the house. While doing that, he was trying to figure out where to go to, he needed a spot to live in. So many things in his mind… he just forgot to pick up most of his belongings.

Later on, Harry was told his ex-wife was cheating on him and he, trying to excuse Daisy, thought: “Maybe Daisy did it because she was imitating her mother’s behavior (his ex-mother-in-law cheated on his ex-father-in-law), what religious people call ‘a chain of sin”. Harry couldn’t accept the fact Daisy became addicted to love affairs, that she was not the charming and deeply-in-love university girl that once was at his side; the one he paid her college registration and fees every semester since her father didn’t care and her mother lost her job, no money back at home.

“I may forgive her if…”

“Come on, Harry! Please, don’t! Don’t do that to yourself... AGAIN! This guy, John, was the last one she fucked… just remember: not the only one! Remember: she changed jobs, and, as a sailor, she had a lover in every port. Moreover, she and her lover sued you so many times to take everything you owned. Ring a bell? You were not even able to see your own daughters for a while, since Daisy asked the Court not to let you get near her, then, your house, well, ex house; therefore, if you were not allowed to get near your house, you weren’t able to see your kids. What stupidity! How can a husband see his children when the Court orders him to keep a distance between him and his ex-wife, the legal guardian?”, his friends helped him to realize the truth.

“Harry, you must try a new beginning.”, somebody recommended later on; and that’s why Harry applied for an overseas job.

“Daddy, actually we want to live with you. We can’t stand to live with my mom and her boyfriend.”, Harry’s daughters explained on the phone after some years have passed.

“Another boyfriend? Is he living with you?”, Harry asked, sincerely worried.

“No, daddy. You don’t understand. After you left the country for this new job, mom and John decided to live together; he left his wife. We don’t trust him, he’s a bad person! For example, every time we go to take a shower, John passes by making strange noises, kind of sexual thing…”

“I see…”, Harry was concerned about his daughters’ safety.

“Dad, can we go there to live?”, his girls asked.

“Unfortunately, my salary is too low for that. Remember, I’m not working as an engineer but as a construction worker.”, Harry regrated.

“Why don’t you come back to our country? You can have a job here and we all can live together, we’ll help you with the house chores and everything we can.”, his daughters proposed.

“All right, all right… it’s a deal!”, Harry’s heart surrendered.

As soon as Harry came back, he emailed his resume to different companies and was hired (he was overqualified). However, after a couple of months living with his daughters, problems began to crack his life. Nowadays, laws allow kids to do as they please; and, if they want to do nothing, it’s more than OK (kids are untouchable now). Consequently, when Harry asked his daughters to help him at home, as they promised, no chores were done. When he was trying to talk, again, with them, about this issue (doing house chores), his daughters decided to go to Court. They argued their father was psychologically abusing them due to his insistence on having them do their house chores. The Court, based on the law, will protect youngsters, not an adult! And that was the reason Harry needed to be separated from his daughters this time.

“Maybe my daughters acted like that because they imitated their mom, you know, she sued me several times.”, Harry told his friends as a reasonable argument.

“Harry… we understand your position, but shit happens sometimes, some others, people just do bad deeds.”, his friends asseverated.

“Maybe you’re right; maybe I have no family then! And I need to move on.”, he came to the conclusion that it was his fate.

Wow, kudos to Harry, that he didn't lose his mind in all of this! Excellent story, by the way, I was genuinely stressed for the guy! I was hoping he would get some kind of retribution like Daisy would lose the house or something lol! That isn't how it works in the real world.

Hey Cole! Thanks for taking the time to read my story and to leave this nice comment. I really appreciate it. Yeah, in English we have a saying; "Shit happens!", and, unfortunately, sometimes it just happens, despite all the beautiful things life offers. I didn't want to have Daisy as the villain and Harry as the victim. I just wanted to have characters representing roles that readers can identify with, and make conclusions in case they are facing something similar. It may help a little, I hope. And you are right: sometimes, "That (retributi...

Henry, Thank you for reading my stories and the kind words!! I really appreciate it! I look forward to reading more of your work as well, it is cool to discover great writers here and the first story of yours was awesome, tragic in one sense but really I think Harry was in a better place in the end? Maybe just stay single for a while. lol!

You're welcome. On the contrary, I thank you. It's true, because you are a true writer with an original style. Yeah, you're right: Harry'd better keep himself single for a while, ha ha. Cole, take very good care of yourself. Blessings.

Clapping. Ok...I tried 3 stories so far, love the slightly "translated" voice (like G marquez and Sorrentino) ...and then you add the brilliant social commentary. Bravo.

Is this based on a true story? Maybe yours? I noticed a hint of regret. The pain felt real.

Thank you, Sarah, for commenting and reading my story. All my short stories are fictional. Stories usually have a moral or a background readers can identify themselves with, that's their purpose (so this effect should be expressed as real as possible by characters). It's great to know you read my story so deeply that you were able to feel Harry's regret or/and pain. Excellent! Thanks again for your feedback. Blessings.

I loved this! What a fantastic interpretation of the prompt. You did a great job writing such a despicable character (Daisy, of course.) Poor Harry. Can't wait to read what you write next!

Hi, Henry, that was a truly rollicking story. I liked the free flowing easy style of writing that you employed. Good one. Wood you also read my story and critique it. I would greatly appreciate it.

This story was funny, but I just wanted to mention that you don't need to add a comma after quotation marks. You can just say "And I need to move on." without the comma. :)
