ATRG: Come Back (Part 7)

Well it's back, and wayyy more mature now- I hope anyways-

I’m smiling for a photo with a girl. The camera flashes. She’s my sister. I think.

She hugs me.

I hug back.

Who is she? Why can’t I remember her name?

Before I can scream out Hidan’s name, Deidara beats me to it.

“HIDAN!?”

He nods, grinning at his best friend.

“Sorry to keep you all waiting, eh?”

“Took you forever, un!”

The blondie ran to his silver haired friend and hugged him. I grin at this. 

Two friends reunited, how nice.

Both sides of the battlefield had stopped slinging spells at each other and were now looking at the two newcomers.

Sasori had his arm in a sling and was being tended to by Angelica while Orion cracked his knuckles menacingly. Meanwhile, Wyvern was flipping through a spellbook, and Miss Tipp was doing the same.

I turned my attention towards Dark Kakuzuwho was staring at me with bright red eyes. 

Konan was staring at her friend Hidan as well, as she ‘sliced’ Pain with a non-lethal paper. Pain was showing some signs of humanity now, his eyes softening, and not even making a move to slice his ex.

The battle was paused, of course, until something lifted me up into the air and started ripping the air right out of me. I couldn’t even scream, I could only weakly gurgle out a “J-h-huh?” as I locked eyes with Dark Kakuzu. This seemed to wake up the corpses and the battle started again.

Hidan immediately ran to me, almost the same speed as our controlled friend. As if on cue, my hands lit up with energy. I didn’t even have to think about it, actually.

He lifted his scythe and slashed Dark Kakuzu’s hands at the same time my entire body burst into energy. The combined attack made Dark Kakuzu roar in pain and release me. 

“You alright, then?” Hidan asked, strangely calm and collected.

“Yes, thanks- Honestly, it’s like you matured, after the- er- accident.” I burst out, then watched his face for any reaction.

He grimaced.

“Well, this sort of calls for it, doesn’t it? With my closest friend now being controlled by the stupid man Konan’s battling right now. I can’t exactly scream all the time.”

He then half smiled.

“Don’t worry though, mate. When this battle’s over I’ll go back to my normal self.”

Hidan winked at me, then screeched something incomprehensible and leaped to attack Dark Kakuzu again, who had recovered.

Damn, he’s tougher than steel. Not that steel would survive Hidan anyway.

Angelica glanced at me, hands alit with blue healing magic.

“Are you alright, Kama? That…person was choking you pretty hard.”

I shook my head, and she started healing my throat.

All around me, chaos was happening. Deidara was battling on equal terms with Itachi again, who seemed exhausted. Orion was fighting Kisame– who was now awake– the two creating mini-earthquakes as they punched and kicked. The remaining corpses were being dealt with by Wyvern, using the spellbook and protecting Sasori, who was fighting using one arm but still very powerful. Miss Tipp was doing very well on her own, as she took down one corpse in relative ease. 

Konan was still…er…having a chat with her ex. They were literally just dancing now, not even fighting. 

It was probably for the best, however. 

I sighed, waiting for my throat to heal. 

Angelica had returned to help Orion, and I was alone…crouched down by a tent as my friends were fighting, possibly to the death.

Something came out of my head.

Chomei.

“Hello, master.”

“Chomei…Hi.”

“What is wrong?”

“They’re all doing something…except for Zetsu but I honestly don’t care about them…”

“Ah. You want to feel useful?”

“Yes.”

“I have an idea. Let me control you again.”

I close my eyes as Chomei enters me again.

…

Drowsily, I can see what’s going on. I’m moving towards one of the corpse’s.

I start to attack it, making progress. It’s almost dead. I reach to deal the finishing blow- and at that moment I’m whisked away by Dark Kakuzu again.

My hand lights on fire- or should I say, my hand lights on fire under the control of Chomei. Sleepily, I glance into his eyes again.

There isn’t any green left. Only murderous red.

I fade in and out of consciousness as Chomei fights Dark Kakuzu. I don’t remember anything, however. Other than being struck with fire or nearly drowned with water.

The battle continues. Chomei keeps fighting, but I can feel my body weakening. Remembering what happened with Hidan, I whisper out:

“C-Chomei. Use the energy…”

There’s a pause, as Dark Kakuzu prepares to strike me.

“As you wish, master.”

It happens. My vision is dotted with…red spots. That can’t be good.

Dark Kakuzu backs off as the surrounding area is lit ablaze. There’s various burns on him, though. So at least I did something to damage him. Something…

This time is much stronger than…the first time… what did Chomei do…?

I then feel my body crumple.

“Wake up…”

“Wake up.”

“Wake up!”

I clumsily shove myself up, then fall down. Someone makes a noise of sympathy.

“Kama, are you okay?”

Opening my eyes, I’m surprised to see Sasori asking that, his face worried.

“Nice of you to care, Sas.” I say, smiling. Deidara ruffles his boyfriend’s hair as Sasori makes an annoyed face.

I look around and then clear my throat.

“Only you two are here?”

Deidara shakes his head while Sasori nods.

“wAit-”

“No, you explain.”

“Fine, fine, un. Angelica- that’s Allegra’s code name,” he explained in a whisper, “healed you, then ran off, un.”

“Oh. I see.”

I peek out of the tent.

Hidan’s in the middle of sacrificing a corpse to his god, and honestly, the fact that he’s keeping Itachi at bay while craving symbols in the ground with his blood is very impressive.

“You two jerks, get over there and help!” I say, goodnaturedly shoving the two outside. They both agree, in their own way. Dei smiles and spawns a clay bird to take him and Sas to the site, while Sasori sticks his tongue out and lets himself be dragged onto the bird.

I watch with a smile as Hidan spews out some profanities at Itachi, the least extreme being “YOU BLIND DINGY DAMN BASTARD” as he gets dragged off by the two artists. 

The smile vanishes as I see what’s going on with the other side.

Dark Kakuzu had apparently snatched Konan, and was now attacking her despite probably not supposing to. I start running there, but since I still have injuries, it takes an eternity. And Chomei isn’t responding, making me swear in hysterical frustration. Did the energy I used up block her out temporarily?

Pain was nowhere to be found, strangely.

Konan desperately tried to defend herself, but Dark Kakuzu was just too enraged.

I stop in my tracks as the truth hits.

Kakuzu- no, Dark Kakuzu mistook Konan for me.

Trying to speed up, I close my eyes and search for Chomei, but I still get nothing. I fling a kunai in frustration.

Konan screams, catching the attention of the others. They start making their way there, then get blocked by something. A orange-black aura/shield.

Someone wearing an orange mask arrives.

“Why hello there. I’m sorry I’m late to the show, but I’m here now. And you will not get to your leader, sadly.”

“WHAT’D YOU MEAN? GET OUT OF OUR WAY, YOU IDIOTIC LOLIPOP LOOKING FUCKING BITCH!”

I agreed with Hidan.

As I wasn’t trapped within the barrier, I sped to Konan.

It looked like it was too late.

And, it was. But for someone else.

Kisame had leaped in front of Konan as Dark Kakuzu stabbed through him with his dark energy infused hand.

Konan’s face was splattered with Kisame’s blood.

She had her eyes closed, then slowly reopened them. When she saw Kisame’s body lying in front of her, Konan let out a heartbreaking scream.

“KISAME! KISAME, YOU IDIOT! DON’T DO THIS, DON’T GO!”

Dark Kakuzu looked on with a blank expression.

The orange masked person nodded.

“Ah, a shame. No matter. Let us go, the leader is waiting for us.”

The Four Masters, and Deidara(who didn’t see what happened) made an attempt to chase after them, but Konan raised her voice, hoarse from her previous screaming:

“No. Leave them.”

Dark Kakuzu looked at the remaining people, and then vanished.

I was the first to arrive at where Konan sat, crying again. Itachi seemed to have snapped out of the trance he was in. He took one look at his partner and ran off. Hidan coughed and closed his eyes, attempting not to cry, I supposed.

Deidara was quietly wiping tears off his face, while Sasori did nothing but pat Dei on the back and whisper words to him. I couldn’t read the redhead’s expression. Tears rolled down my face too.

I tasted one of them. It tasted like blood.

The Four Masters sorrowfully stood in the back as the four of us sat around Kisame’s body and mourned. Angelica was actually crying.

Sasori suddenly reached out to grab Kisame- I didn’t know why, but then I saw- it was being lifted into the air. I tried to grab his leg- his bloodstained leg- but failed. The body disappeared.

Konan moaned out: “No…” as Sasori finally showed some emotion and wiped a tear from his face, hugging Deidara now. Hidan smashed a tree in anger, and dropped to the floor, wailing.

All of us sat and sobbed and sat and sobbed and sat and sobbed.

“Hey.”

“Gray.”

The trickster came in, wings drooping slightly. I let him hug me; I would have hugged him, but my arms felt limp.

“How’s…everything?”

“The usual.”

Gray exhaled.

“Our new roommates, the Four Masters, are pretty chill, but our teammates aren't. Itachi's been holed up in his room the past few days, only appearing at mealtimes. He looks awful, even more awful than before. Everyone seems to have mutually agreed to forgive him. Hidan hasn’t sworn at me for three days straight. Deidara can’t seem to make his dumb clay things, and Sasori…eh, he’s…almost the same. Very restless though. Konan’s a weeping, sobbing mess. Meeting her ex, and losing a friend has taken a toll on her.”

He studied my face.

“You seem to be the most okay.”

“I…I don’t know, honestly. This might sound terrible, but…I wasn’t that close to Kisame, so I don’t really miss him…”

I banged the desk, making Gray jump.

“It’s terrible. I’m terrible. I’m a horrible friend.”

Gray sighed.

“You aren’t alone on that. I have been asking myself, ever since I heard the news- ‘Where were you? Why didn’t you arrive on time?’ …Kama, ever since my village was burnt to complete ashes, and everyone died, I blamed myself. And I’m blaming myself for this. It’s like time repeated itself…”

His eyes crinkled, which meant he was close to crying.

“But I can’t..stay depressed. Because…there will always be better days…right?”

Right?

His words echoed in my mind.

I thought of Itachi, hiding in his room, crying most of the day away, never interacting with his friends. He must hate himself for being under the masked man's control. And the fact that Kisame was his best friend…

Sasori, holding all the pain inside, never letting everyone help him. He refuses to let anyone comfort him, not even Dei. He thinks that he should help everyone instead.

Deidara, losing his artistic flair. Kisame’s death made Deidara depressed and gloomy. He refuses to make a clay sculpture, or do any art at all.

Hidan, acting strangely mature. Hidan, who knows that his best friend killed Kisame. I realized that he might also be very miserable, deep down, because of all the pain of someone- his actual boyfriend- killing another friend. That’s why he’s been so…

I took a deep breath.

Konan, broken inside from her past boyfriend reappearing and doing nothing at all. She found and lost him in the span of a day. Her mental state was damaged even more by Kisame, one of her first friends, dying.

Gray, relating to me, with past survivors' guilt. The only one that survived his village’s massacre. He wanted to save Kisame,and he tried. But he couldn’t make it on time. He arrived after Kisame’s body disappeared. Even though he wasn’t there, this event brought up past scars. He’s hurt badly too.

And me.

Me, hurt but alright from the battle. Me, the least shaken. Me, who could have done more for my friend, even though I wasn’t a very close friend of Kisame. Me, who maybe, could have, would have saved Kisame if not for my injuries.

Me.

“Gray…” I replied, releasing the breath, “I don’t know anymore.”

Outside, thunder boomed and a heavy rain descended, covering our already gloomy headquarters with a raincloud.

Gray manages to choke out the first word of his sentence, an abruptly cut off version of my name, before bursting into sobs.

I don’t know anymore.
