Bedtime Fantasy Fiction

Wings sprout from my back, and soon I’m high in the sky, checking the beautiful nature below me.

“Hello!” a voice in front of me calls out.

I look and see a lady wearing a large, bright blue dress with diamonds along the edge coming toward me.

“Hello!” I reply as I stop mid-air to wait for her approach.

She stops a few feet from me, and I am immediately enthralled by her beauty. Long, shiny, red hair cascade down as she stares at me with large, brown eyes. A beaming smile that shows her large dimples and lips that make me want to go to her and plant a kiss.

“Welcome to the Land of Fascination,” she says in a voice I could listen to for ages.

“Thank you,” I say. “I’m so excited to be here.”

“Enjoy the wonders and stay as long as you want,” she says.

“I will do so.”

As she flew off, I truly wish I could stay to experience such an exhilarating life such as this one. A wish I always wanted. Now I am experiencing such.

I started my journey once again, taking in all the sights.

Darkness that slowly recedes as light replaces until it is no more.

I open my eyes. In front of me is the alarm clock, panic at first, for its well past the hour to get up for work. As my head clears, I realize today is one where I stay away from the monotonous work life of humanity's makings.

“Why couldn’t I stay in that world forever?” I ask myself as I turned onto my back to look at the ceiling. “Why must I be tortured?”

For many years now, I have travelled many worlds through my dreams. Dreams that are a glimpse into reality. To experience a fuller picture of what is out there in the universe and beyond. We only know a small corner of what is truly out there. The glorious news is I get to experience the fuller picture.

When I first had these dreams, I knew they differed from others. These dreams I can remember crystal clear. The other dreams were forgotten or fuzzy in my head, like watching a show on a terrible TV. I know as time went by that I was given an opportunity to see the bigger picture. A gift from God.

As I lay in bed, I recall the one time I told someone of my dreams to different worlds. It was five years ago, and it was to my fiancé. Now, as I turn my head and look at an empty spot beside me, it was probably a mistake.

“I can go to different worlds in my dreams,” I spoke to her that day.

“I have dreams of going to other lands,” she says to me, not comprehending what I’m saying to her.

“Do you believe there is a possibility your dreams are based on reality?” I ask her.

“No,” she replied. “They are just dreams. I heard of people that had prophetic dreams.”

“Mine are real. I know they are real.”

I remember her giving me a queer look, so that day I dropped the conversation. But as time went by, she would ask me to explain the world I had just encountered. I would tell her with excitement, not realizing I was slowly driving her away. Was it jealousy? Did she think me mad? I never truly received an answer from her. Just a note when I came home from work explaining how we had grown apart. Apart? For weeks after her leaving, I thought the reasoning was me spending too much time reminiscing about my dreams instead of my fiancé. Did I ignore her too much? I grew tired of racking my brain so eventually, I moved on.

Not all my dreams are ones of fun. There are worlds out there that can bring terror to your heart. Worlds of darkness. Worlds of beings that did not welcome me to their domain. Luckily, I exited before harm came my way.

As I lay here, I wished I could control what worlds I entered.

“I would probably spend most of my time in the world I can fly in,” I thought.

But there are other ones that I enjoyed to.

There is a world I go to where the entire land is covered with forest. Trees of all types are scattered everywhere. What makes this world exciting is that I have claws on my hands and feet. So, I can climb up any tree I feel like it. I’m also able to leap from one tree to the next one.

Then this is a world where there are no trees, but a constant rolling hill, with bright green grass. The fun part about this land is that you can jump high into the air then land to bounce high once again. It was like one large trampoline.

There have been lands that I have not loved nor have hated.

Being one who loves nature, I’m not thrilled to enter one that is covered with buildings. And covered with people constantly moving about. It was like an obstacle course moving around the place. Sporadic movement that near the end made me want to scream.

I entered one where the land was open overall, but the people I encountered were very bizarre. It didn’t matter what age they looked for; all acted the same. It was like they were stuck at a mental capacity of a five-year-old. By seeing what they have tried to create; I was surprised they were still in existence. It didn’t take long for me to want to be out of that land.

Who knows what else is out there for me to see? It seems limitless.

“I just pray I never go to one where I am killed,” I thought.

I don’t know what will happen. Will I die in my sleep? Being killed, will I never be able to enter the land again?

So many questions, but as I get out of bed, I will not worry about it. Right now, I’m going to enjoy the blessing I have been given.

Ah. I hope whoever my future fiancee is doesn't run away when I tell him about my dreams. I believe I visit other worlds in my dreams, too. Though I don't take it as serious as this character does, I often go to bed looking forward to the next world I'll experience. And I have favourite worlds too. This is the second character I've found on here who relates almost fully with me, dream wise. Thank you for writing about them (since the gender isn't stated).

Thank you for the comments. I had dreams of flying and others that have been unique. I kept the gender out so anyone can relate to it. Glad you enjoyed

I relate to this main character. Though my dreams sometimes seem to tell the future. There was this embarrassing moment in fifth grade(this was the first time I remember it happening), I dreamt we had a guest teacher and she was really mean. I woke up, went to school. Had that exact teacher and she was mean. "She was the girl from my dream!" I said, a tad loudly. Laughing stock of the my class. Wonderful story. I enjoyed it.

The opening of this made me think of the second setting in Sword Art Online. From there on you had me hooked.

I loved just how easy this was to read but still be complex and descriptive. The way the words flowed and the format made it easy for my eyes to not get tangled (it sounds strange but sometimes my eyes zone out when really things that don't flow.) I loved the storyline and it was engaging

Thank you for the comments. Nice to know I have accomplished what I set out to do in a story. I know what you mean with the eyes

Hi Corey, Thanks for posting this interesting story. It meets the prompt perfectly. I like how you describe multiple worlds each with different characteristics. A few things stood out to me: Wings sprouted from my back, and soon I’m high in the sky, checking the beautiful nature below me. - you change tense within this paragraph. If the story is in present tense it needs to be sprout, not sprouted. The same problem continues throughout. For example here: She stops (present tense) a few feet from me, and I am (present tense) immediately ...

I greatly appreciate your comments. Past/present has been my thorn in writing stories for way too long.
