The young soldier moved through the train, trying to shift his weight to compensate for the rocking motion. He was still quite new to the train crew and hadn’t yet become used to the constant movement of the ground beneath his feet. He had a private message to deliver, from The Driver to the Baggage Master, which required traversing the whole length of the train. It would take him nearly half an hour to reach the rear carriage. His boot heels chimed on the smooth floor, announcing his approach to those further along. Uniformed crew members s...

The old man sat by the glittering Christmas tree, snoring gently in his comfy armchair. His white hair sprouted outwards in untidy tufts, clean but unbrushed. His puffy face and corpulent stature spoke to seasonal over-indulgence, and the way the chair seemed to form around him suggested that he hadn't moved in some time. Black crow feathers stuck up from his hair and his look was finished...

“Hey, Jad, I’ve got something!” Yisaheur swivelled around in his chair, waggling his eye stalks excitedly at his crew-mate. He stabbed a tentacle towards his console, where jagged lines were jumping about across one of the screens. Ma'jadaloon was more jaded. “Really?” She yawned widely, all three rows of her teeth on menacing display. They had been out in deep space for a very long time, with nothing whatsoever to show for it, except incredible boredom and a tremendous desire to lay eyes on any being at all, except for each other. They had ...

Moonlight illuminated the casement window, dispensing with the need for artificial light. Stax was grateful for that; the soft, natural light enabled her to see what she was doing without making her any more obvious to anyone passing below. She made sure she was balanced securely on the sill, and retrieved a piece of heavy wire from her pocket. Inserting it in the slender gap between the window and its frame, she gave the wire a quick twist, and the latch sprang up. The window opened outwards, making it a tricky manoeuvre to swing around it....
