โWhat are you looking at, Cass?โ
โHuh?โ I said, pulling myself out of stare into space mode.
โI asked what you were looking at.โ My brother Cody said.
โOh. Nothing. Just zoning out.โ
โHmph.โ
Cody and I walked through Safeway, him occasionally grabbing outrageous things like Oreo Oโs or gallons of chocolate milk. Every time he did, I would slap it out of his hands with a sharp, โNo.โ
โWhy not?โ
โYou are- we are both hyper enough already. You and I, we do not need anymore sugar.โ
Me and my brother are both ADHD, which means we both rarely get sugar because we will act like a cheetah that just drank twelve espressos.
โBut what about that?โ He gestured at my Starbucks. โThat canโt not have sugar.โ
โYes, however, it has two shots of espresso, which means I will go home and take a nap immediately after I drop you off at Michaelโs house. Dropping you off with Michaelโs mom highly caffeinated is not being a good big sister.โ
He pouted.
Luckily for me, my brother had a sleepover with his friend Michael and some of their other friends. Which means I can have a nice twelve year old boy free weekend.
I finally paid for our purchase, luckily spotting a stray KitKat bar that had somehow ferreted its way into our cart. I removed it (โOh, come on, Cass!โ).
We got home, and I said, okay, go pack, Iโm going to put away the groceries.โ
โOkay!โ He said with a grin, showing off chocolate brown teeth.
โWhere did you get that chocolate?โ
โBye!โ He said and raced upstairs.
I put my hand on my forehead.
I pulled up to Michaelโs house.
โYou have everything?โ I asked.
Cody nodded.
โEverything?โ I raised an eyebrow.
โYeeessss.โ
I turned off the ignition. โLets go.โ
I grabbed Codyโs stuff out of the trunk and walked up the front steps. He knocked really loudly.
A girl opened the door, and the breath was knocked out of my lungs.
She was beautiful.
She looked to be about my age, seventeen. Her long honey blonde hair fell down her shoulders. Her green eyes twinkled with a smile as she saw Cody.
โHey, Cody.โ
โHi, Marissa!โ
โMichaelโs inside waiting for you.โ
โAwesome!โ He ran around her and inside the house.
โHi.โ She turned to me and smiled. My knees turned to jelly.
โH-h-hi.โ I said, like a dork.
She kept smiling. โYouโre Codyโs big sister?โ She held out her hand. โMy name is Marissa. Iโm Michaelโs big sister.โ
I shook off my daze and held out my free hand. โMy name is Cassandra, but you can call me Cass or Cassie.โ
โYou have a pretty name.โ She gestured inside. โDo you want to come inside? Set that stuff down and have a cup of tea or coffee?โ
โSure, thanks.โ I stepped inside with a smile.
Since when have I liked girls?
I...I have always thought I was straight...but, as hard as it is to admitโฆ
I am falling for Marissa.
What would my parents think? What would my friends think?
I followed her inside and she pointed to a tan couch and said, โYou can put his stuff right there.โ
โThanks.โ I put down his stuff and followed her to a granite island.ย
She turned on a tea kettle and said, โCoffee, or tea?โ
โCoffee, if you have decaf. I like being able to make it through conversations without falling asleep.โ
She gave me a confused look. Idiot idiot idiot. You're not funny, so stop trying to be.
โMy ADHD,โ I explained. โIf I have caffeine, I fall asleep.โ
โReally? Thatโs interesting. Iโm dyslexic, dyscalculic if you want to get specific.โ
โDyscalculic?โย
She blushed, the same way I probably did earlier. โDyslexia, except the math version. I can read just fine. Numbers get mixed up in my head and float around the page.โ
โIโve heard of dyslexia, just never...dyscalculia?โ
โYeah. A lot of people havenโt.โ
The kettle whistled.
โI should get that.โย
Marissa turned and we locked eyes for a second too long. We both looked away, blushing.
We sipped our coffees as boys filed in, and I realized I should probably get home.
โIโm sorry, I would have stayed longer, butโฆโ I waved my hand around. โTwelve year old sleepovers really aren't my scene.โ
โThat's understandable. Do you want toโฆโ She looked down, blushing. โMaybe grab coffee sometime?โ
I smiled. โThat sounds nice.โ
โI promise, decaf only and no twelve year olds.โ
I laughed. โGood. Anything else would be a dealbreaker.โ
Two weeks later
We decided that getting coffee was kind of boring, so we settled on dinner instead. I drove up to Il Posto Della Pasta (The Pasta Place). The buildings tinted windows only revealed a little bit of light from the inside, and the smell of garlic and butter wafted through the air.
I walked up the stairs and tugged my dress lower on to my knees. I had debated wearing a dress or a blouse, but in the end I settled on a blouse.
I swung open the door and found Marissa already waiting at a table.
โHello,โ I said.
โHello,โ She said back.
I took a seat. โHow are you today?โ
โIโm good, how are you?โ
โGood.โ I opened my menu.
I was scrolling through a list of paninis when Marissa said, โWhat would they think of us?โ
โHuh?โ
โYour parents, my parents, your classmates, my classmates. If we were dating, what would they think?โ
I stalled. Iโm not sure what my parents would think. I havenโt even told them Marissa exists.
โI donโt care what they would think.โ I said. โEven though you are one of the last people anyone would expect me to fall in love with, once I saw youโฆโ
She smiled, but still looked uneasy.
โMarissa.โ
She looked up to meet my face.
โUm, scusatemi, ladies, but are you ready to order?โ
I had been so distracted that the waiter had snuck up on us.ย
We ordered.
I looked at her. Then I had a thought.
โYou know I want you, it's not a secret I try to hide.
โI know you want me, so donโt keep saying our hands are tied.
โYou claim itโs not in the cards, and fate is pulling you miles away and out of reach from me,
โBut youโre here in my heart, so who can stop me if I decide that youโre my destiny?
โWhat if we rewrite the stars, say you were made to be mine?
โNothing could keep us apart, you are the one I was meant to find.
โItโs up to you, and itโs up to me, no one can say what we get to be.
โWhat if we rewrite the stars? Changing the world to be ours, tonight.โ
She looks at me with a small smile. We both love the Greatest Showman, and now Iโm hoping that sheโll sing Anne Wheelerโs part.
โYou think itโs easy? You think I donโt want to run to you?
โBut there are mountains, and there are doors that we canโt walk through.
โI know youโre wondering why, because weโre able to be just you and me, within these walls.
โBut when we go outside, youโre gonna wake up and see that it was hopeless after all.
โNo one can rewrite the stars, how can you say youโll be mine?
โEverything keeps us apart, and Iโm not the one you were meant to find.
โItโs not up to you, itโs not up to me, when everyone tells us what we can be.
โHow can we rewrite the stars? Changing the world to be ours, tonight.โ
We continue on with the song, and I notice that the entire restaurant stops to watch. Marissa has a great singing voice, and Iโm not too shabby either.
At the end of the song, I pulled her close and asked, โHow can we rewrite the stars?โ
And then I kissed her, and it was the best thing in the world.

Wow, wow, wow Carolina!! I love the song Rewrite the stars! I loved the entire movie too! Especially the song "This is Me". I am in awe by how well you incorporated that song into this story, and into fitting the prompt so well! You did such an amazing job! Have a nice day! :)

PSA: The Greatest Showman is the absolute BEST. No argument. That is all. Edit: I also liked the idea of them breaking into song in the middle of a restaurant Disney-style :P

I think I have to watch the movie to understand the ending part but loved the story very much. Well, I have submitted new stories would love your feedback in your free time.

Of course! The song in the movie is performed by Zac Efron and Zendaya (if you know who they are, if not no judgement) a white guy and a black girl. In the movie their characters fall in love, but its borderline impossible for a white guy and black girl to be in love in the mid 19th century. "I know youre wondering why, because we're able to be just you and me, within these walls, but when we go outside, you're gonna wake up and see that it was hopeless after all." I hope I made at least a little bit of sense ;P Thank you so much, and I'll g...

So... I mean, the gayยฉ might be making me biased, but still, such a moving story! This kind of reminds me of the dear evan hansen book, where some of the songs actually stay inside the plot. Great job!

oh my god!!!!! a. I love that movie, and I love singing. b. I actually have ADHD, so this was really cool. (my ADHD isn't quite like this story, and I could probably give a whole lecture on how ADHD manifests itself differently for different people, and the name is actually a bit of a misnomer because the defining characteristics are not attention deficit and hyperactivity, but I'm not going to do that, your welcome ;) ) c. pretty cool how you included a little known type of dyslexia, i didn't know that was a thing, so thx. great story!!!
