Science Fiction

Farewell, everyone. I have shifted my hiding place now. I have to stop typing because they will break in at any moment.

Farewell.

If I am discovered, then you must have found this phone in the drawer of the cabinet.

If I am not, then I have to go on the run. And I will hopefully document it.

Till next time, if there is one remaining for me.

**

“The sensors will take this down soon enough. If anyone’s here, tell my family I love them!”

A pause filled with ragged breathing.

“It’s impossible that anyone is listening to this. But if anyone is, the whole moon camp being luxury is a LIE!”

I can’t believe my ears.

“They don’t give us enough food. We’re only guinea pigs! They didn’t bring us here for goodwill. They brought everyone here to experiment on us! We’re all infected with some weird disease that is caused by the metals found on the moon.”

“That’s the real reason they won’t let us come back to earth!”

“I don’t know how much longer I can last here. They said I would die very soon.”

Her voice started to crack with desperation.

“Please, anyone! Tell my family I love them.”

The video glitches out.

**

“This year’s winner is… Aislen Cailen!”

The spotlights desperately search for me. I back towards the wall. I don’t want to leave my family. I immediately start running towards the higher office. Over there, there was a secret annex, rather like the one in which the Anne Frank of tale was said to have hidden in, in the World War II.

The door was cleverly concealed behind heavy bookshelves that quietly swung apart to reveal a secret room. The mechanism was also made to turn off the cameras until the bookshelves are closed.

The room only had enough stock of food and water for about a week if you eat and drink plentily to your appetite. If I rationed, I would have little less than two weeks.

My heart still racing, I hide behind the couch to be safe. I certainly feel safer there.

**

“Welcome, everyone, to the annual draw of names for our awesome little camp on the moon! Which one of you, today, will get the chance to make HISTORY?”

The crowd went wild, apart from me. They all probably didn’t read the Terms and Conditions.

“This year’s special guest is… wait for it… Verda Yearling!”

Even I gasped. Verda Yearling is the most talented astrophysicist of all time. She is insanely busy with her ground-breaking work, so everyone is shocked that she would be the one to change someone’s life forever just by picking a chit.

Nonetheless, there she is.

“Ah, thank you, everyone. Let’s see who will be lucky this year!”

Just at that moment, my phone started to vibrate. My favorite MeTuber, KYmaria38 had uploaded a video. She is one of the people on the moon who kept a regular blog on life on the moon.

Just on time. The 24th.

AN INTRODUCTION TO HB-1: THE LUNAR SETTLEMENT OF YOUR DREAMS!

Welcome, reader, to a short guide of how people are chosen for our marvelous lunar settlement!

Every year, only one person from all of the great Mesa city is chosen to go to this settlement towards the north of the moon, after six months of training and trial launches. All expenses covered by our very generous partner, our very own MesaTech! If you’d like, you can increase your chances of winning by buying a Mesarae! In the final draw, this would add ten more of your name per Mesarae. This person, who not only will receive a salary just for living in our state-of-the-art settlement, equipped with everything one’s heart could desire, will also win lifelong fame! You would score your very own chapter in the history books! Not one-hit-reality-tv-fame. Kids-would-learn-about-you-a-couple-years-from-now fame. What’s to lose? **

**Terms and conditions apply- once you are on the moon, you will not be shipped back to earth ever again, because of travel restrictions. You are not allowed to bring anyone with you. You can always broadcast and call people on earth with our top-of-the-line MesaCONNECT technology! If you refuse, we’re afraid that we will either have you taken by force, or put under lock and key.

**

I then open my phone and switch off the WiFi so they cannot track me. After I do this, the download notification catches my eye.

I had downloaded that video. KYmaria38.

I played it.

**

I can’t believe it. I have to do something.

I hack into the central WiFi and log into MeTube and make a new account. It isn’t attached to my account, so I’m safe. Then I up my security on both accounts so it is nearly impossible to hack into either one without the password (1928*36400*0).

On the other one, I post KYmaria38’s video. Then I send the link to everyone I know with the new account and tell them to download it before it gets taken down.

There are a lot of flaws in my plan, but I can’t do anything about it now.

**

I downloaded the video without watching it first. At every 24th of every month, she uploads a video that gets taken down by the sensor at the moon base that makes sure the people there don’t post anything that could make the image of the camp look bad.

Something my uncle had told me, that no one else knew.

I’m always too late to download it, but this time, I did it! Just as soon as the download is complete, the video is taken down.

We’re sorry, but this video is disabled. It will be deleted in ONE MINUTE.

I closed my phone. Verda Yearling is about to announce who would go to the settlement this year. All of a sudden, I feel the need to go hide. My eyes are burning but all of my senses feel sharper. I duck through the crowd towards the exit as Ms. Yearling takes a chit.

I hide behind the door and peer through a crack.

**

It’s a family thing to love space. Everyone in my family has always wanted to go to space, and that’s why they are all astro-scientists. They infected me through peer pressure, and it is now my official goal in life to go to space. That’s why I signed up for the Draw.

Despite the T&C.

I’ve always (and have always been told to) read the terms and conditions before agreeing to anything. Unfortunately, no one else does. I know this for a fact.

**

My name is Aislen Cailin. I’m Welsh, and my family are bunch of scientists that work for MesaTech. Combine that, you get someone with no friends. My family is known within the company; specifically, for the draw of names for the lunar settlement.

**

I log out of the WiFi.

Now to wait. I am still hiding behind the couch and so I hear the sound before anything else.

The sound of someone trying to break through the bookshelf.

Sensors or censor? Both kind of work but it distracted me from what was a good story. I am easily distracted. I enjoyed this.

Still works as "sensor" so just pretend that's what you meant. Finding it hard to get readers for my take on the prompt. Guess I just have to hope it gets put in top ten responses or something.
