“My Mother's House” by Jem Zargo

My mother passed away at the beginning of 2019 after a long illness. We lived on opposite sides of the country. After the funeral I stayed alone in her house for a few days before returning home. It wasn't actually a house but a very large three bedroom apartment. Not wide but very long. I live in a small one bedroom flat so I was unused to living in such a large space. The judge pronounced him guilty. And the verdict: death. He was aghast. Death. Did people still get sentenced to death? He hadn't heard of it. "Death? What is that all about, Sydney?" "Yeah, well, Mike. It's certainly unusual but ... geez ... if that's what the judge says, who are we to question it?" Mike couldn't believe how sanguine his lawyer was being.
