Aurora

I brush my hair impatiently, glancing at the clock every second or so. Looking in the mirror, I’m pleased to see that even with my shaky hands I could manage a braided bun with loops and swirls. My dress floats above the ground, the pink and blue hearts glimmering. I look at the clock again. 7:45, it reads. Oh no! 15 minutes left! Grabbing my best lipstick, Loving Hearts Red, I hurriedly grab my purse, stuff my phone and wallet in, and sprint off to Cozy’s Cafe  to meet my first date.

Apollo

I stride down the unfamiliar street, glancing at the stores and houses. This place isn’t bad, but it could be better. Scanning the street for a coffee shop, I straighten my tie and stride forward. Hopefully my date will look as good as her profile picture in that dating app. Finally, my sharp eyes catch a sign reading: Cozy’s Cafe! 40 percent sale for Valentines Day!

At a booth, there is a young woman, bouncing in her seat and scanning the crowd. She sees me and smiles, her lips a bright happy red. I try to return it, but I’m too bothered by the top of the booth, with a mismatched pattern. 

“Hi! You must be..Apollo, right?”

“Why would I be meeting you if I wasn’t?”

The woman, Aurora, laughs. I’m surprised; I hadn’t meant to be funny. Taking a seat, I glance at the menu and immediately utter a silent groan; it was way too pink and had too many hearts.

“You picked a good day for a date,” Aurora said, shyly smiling at me.

“Of course! Valentine’s day is perfect for meeting dates.” I answered, straining not to blurt out how terrible the menu is. She smiled at me again, but now I was focused on finding a place in the cafe that wasn’t pink.

“Hello, may I have your order?” A young blonde girl wearing a pink dress suddenly showed up, grinning.

Aurora ordered a Strawberry Latte; I ordered a Coffee.  No sugar, no milk, just plain. Besides, I had lost my appetite long ago, when I saw the menu and the top of the booth.

My date happily chatted to me about how nice this place was and how handsome I am; I was trying not to find another thing to worry about.

Aurora

I had arrived early, at 7:50, waiting for my date to arrive. When the sharp gentleman, glancing at me, had arrived, I felt like throwing up; it was my first date! I didn’t have experience, only a sense of humor and a nice dress. We both said hi, then he walked in the booth I had picked, and sat down. 

I hope I chose a good place to have a first date.

I really hope so. 

The sign on the front said 40 percent off for today, right?

Apollo really is smart, picking Valentines day for a date.

This place is really pretty, and the drinks are good too. I hope that this can convince him to stay with me…

Let’s see how nice he is.

Wow. I was so, so surprised. He was so funny! With his clever quips, he almost rivaled me for my humor and jokes. 

We would fit together so well! Like peas in a pod. Inseparable.

I lost myself, dreaming about our wedding, when I was dressed in a long, white gown and he was the handsome, charming man, and how he would lift my face to meet his, and say: “You are my everything. I love you.” Then he would embrace me, and we would-

I’m getting ahead of myself. Snapping myself back, I laughed again at his pun about coffee.

So striking…

And his name, Apollo, said it all. He was just like the Greek God, attractive  and charming. I was in love with his easy moves, and stunning face. I hope he feels the same for me.

Apollo

Okay, I have had it with this place. The workers were so slow in making the drinks, taking ten minutes just to send it out. The young waiters stumbled all over the place. And the cafe itself...

Ugh.

Worn chairs sat over a brown floor that looked like it had been burnt and scratched by an angry cat dipped in cheese. Most of the booths had terrible taste in color. And they were dirty. The table begged for a wipe.

I thought of just- 

Walking out. Actually getting up, ignoring the girl before me, saying:

“Sorry, this place is terrible, I’m leaving.” Bypassing the shock on her face. And resuming my search for a girlfriend.

If I do that, I have ruined another date, lost another possible wife. 

But I just couldn’t stand it anymore! I couldn’t stand this place! I-

Wait. So what if the chairs are ugly? Or if the booth had terrible colors? I’m here for a date. A date with a beautiful girl. And I need to focus and actually get to know her.

“Um, why are you standing up? D-do you need the bathroom? Or-”

“Actually, I’m fine. I just want to get to know you more.”

“Um! U-uh-Sure! I want to get to know you too!”

She’s nervous. I feel guilty. After being ignored for ten minutes, suddenly the person who just prepared to walk out asks you a question. You probably would be stunned. I would be too.

Aurora

“Where should we meet for our second date?”

WHAT. After enjoying being in Apollo’s presence, mostly his sudden warmth towards me, I had never thought that he would ask me for a second date!

“How about this,” I said, pointing at a fancy steak restaurant.

“Sounds good! I’ll see you, then.” I gave him a shy little wave. He smiled. Then he reached over and kissed me. I was too stunned to speak. Apollo then walked onto the streets, and I lost him in the crowd. I really, really can’t wait to meet him again.
