Forbidden Love

“You know that you would never be able to cast the Tentacles spell if your life depended on it, C.”

“Come on! Like you can do it!”

“You come on!”

“No you-”

I reached for Blaze’s arm, but Luke cut me off by swatting my hand away. Good timing, too. I was reaching for Blaze’s fiery side. Luke shot daggers at me.

“Can you guys focus on the subject: Spells We Should Be Practicing But Are Being Put Off And Procrastinated Anyway?”

There was Luke, so serious, yet managing to make me snort.

“Well, I bet both of you can’t procrastinate better than me!”

Blaze’s sarcastic tone set me off again. I rolled my eyes.     

“Hey, like you ever put off an assignment for five weeks!”

Blaze just laughed.

“Seven weeks for me!!”

“Oh my gosh…”

“For real!!”

Luke glanced at Blaze, then grinned.

“Well, I have for two days.”

“He-”

That little? Wow. I gaped at him, and he folded his arms and laughed. Blaze looked shell shocked. He brushed his bright blue-red hair and sent a flurry of snowflakes my way.

“Wow.”

“Serious?”

“Yep. That’s how long I could put off homework for winter break before….”

“Yeah.”

“I know.”

There was a long and solemn silence. We were all thinking of before the war, when we could just enjoy regular things, like ice cream and snowball fights. Blending in was not very hard at all. We were humans. Everyone thought we were. It was nice.

Then an atomic bomb dropped.

How wonderful.

Apparently the human society had found out about the magic society, and wanted to get rid of all of us because we hid the existence of magic. The magic society maintained that stance and was not ill-intended, but the human society interpreted it that way. And so, millions were wiped out during the first attack. The healers worked overtime, and our leader was furious.

Then the war started one week later.

Of course, we had an advantage. Charmers could charm the heck out of a human. Wizards had potions of poison. Healers could (well duh!) heal. And Luke, Blaze, and I were sorcerers. Armed with Spells and scrolls with runes like Hellfire and Morganite, we were the deadliest. And really tired.

“What are you guys up to?”

My overworked brain gave a sigh and I looked around. 

“Lemon! What are you doing? You gotta go treat the wounded!”

Oh yeah, humans had bombs. A lot of bombs. We can’t make bombs. We can’t dodge bombs. So Lemon, one of the healers, has to treat all the people that got injured.

“I could afford a break. Your brother was coming back from his.”

Luke offered her a smile. She took it. Groaning, Lemon rubbed her arms and gingerly stretched.

I conjured a glass of lemonade. (Get it?) Handing it to her, I glanced at the pink sky. It was awfully pink for dusk.

“Sorry to see you so busy.”

Blaze patted her.

“Yeah, I-”

It was the perfect time for Michael to butt in.

“Oi, Lemon! You treated all of them?”

Lemon groaned and stretched her arms again.

“Sorry Luke, Blaze, C. I have to run.”

Lemon glided towards the recovery tent.

“Coming!”

I watched her leave, and then remembered.

“It’s so sad that there are so many people hurt on Christmas.”

Blaze coughed and Luke and I stared at him.

“Celeste, I literally have to worry about the war every second. Are you really concerned about Christmas, girl?” 

I sniggered again. Then the general sent me a mind message.

“CELESTE, YOU HAVE A REPORT DUE! REPORT NOW!”

Well, another great time to butt in, right?

“Yes sir!”

Luke was grasping his head.

“Did you guys hear that?”

Blaze rose from his crouching spot.

“I think so… My head is clogged now.”

I gave them an apologetic smile.

“Gotta go now, guys.”

“Come back so-”

As Luke was waving, a thing collided with him.

What happened next was, to put it mildly, ABSOLUTELY CRAZY.

I jumped and bradished my arm in front of Luke. He was making a choking sound.

“Luke, are you-”

He didn’t reply, he just giggled.

“Luke! What's so…”

Then I noticed that Blaze is also snorting and laughing. I turn around to the thing.

“Alright then. I’ll just take care of you-”

WAIT WAIT WAIT.

It’s a human.

No! WAIT.

He is handsome.

Handsome?

Wait, what?

WHAT?

No!

He’s a human.

But I think he’s handsome.

Love at first sight?

Oh my gosh…

I think I’m in

Love?

I blushed, and Blaze noticed. 

“Brandon! Where have you been?”

He was not looking at him though, but at me.

No. I’m crazy.

“Oh.. Hehee…. Just wanted to say hello. Guess I got too excited about finally meeting you guys ever since the war.”

Brandon. Such a nice name.

“Hey Brandon! This is Celeste! She’s one of the socercers! Like us!”

Why is Brandon blushing too?

“Hi Brandon! I… Um… Like your suit!!”

Brandon shyly beamed.

“I just stopped by to say hi. I gotta go to a human town… war stuff. I’ll visit soon!” His eyes flicked to me. He then jumped on the teleporter.

My brain is swimming.

Luke flipped his gold hair, tugged his backpack, opened his book, and shot a knowing smile at me.

Blaze straightened his fiery-icy clothes (They were on fire and ice), then smirked.

“CC, you're supposed to report to the boss!”

“I know, Blaze. But Brandon…”

“Hehehe…”

Luke flipped a page. I glanced at his book.

Romeo and Juliet

“The two lovers met at night, and….”

Blaze shoots me a look.

I know what I have to do.

Later that night:

Will this work?

I’m crazy.

Can love at first sight be a thing?

Being in love with a human is taboo.

But it’s Christmas! We stopped fighting! We can do whatever!!

What if he says no?

Wait. Footsteps. The jingle of a teleporter.

HE’S COMING OH NO!!!

“Hi.”

“You came!”

Brandon blushes and quickly looks away.

“Yeah, I-”

He stops and looks away again.

Outside I’m boring, normal, just a hint of blushing. Inside, I’m wild, nervous, and jittery. Blaze’s words float back to me.

“Go with your gut!”

Luke’s reassuring face pops up.

I wonder if I can say it. I wonder if he will believe me. How will I say it?

“Hey, I’m in love with you!” Too forceful.

“Um.. so.. This is weird..But I like you!” Too nervous.

“Oh, I think someone likes you.” Too weird!

What am I going to do? I don’t know!

Go with my gut.

“Hey… Every since you came into my life I have loved you. I know that humans and magic can never love, but I think that rule can burn in . I love you…”

I turned away.

Oh my gosh. That was horrible.

Brandon blushed harder. He reached for my face, turned it, and brushed my strands of purple hair away. Then he kissed me.

“I love you too…”

I could only mumble as I was enveloped in the kiss. It felt good, something that never happens any more.

 “Thanks….”

He grinned. 

“When I saw you, I think that something clicked. We are forbidden lovers, but we were meant to be.”

“Yes.”

Epilogue

Where is he?

No….

The war is OVER!

But he’s not here.

Not here.

Not here...

NO.

Can he be

Dead?

NonONoNONoNO!

I crouched down and placed some flowers. Lilys, they were his favorite. People came and talked to me, but I was too busy sobbing. The sky eventually darkened, but I was still sobbing.

“I’m sorry Brandon. So sorry.”

I sobbed even harder. Then I remembered a fact. A fact that I have missed. I cracked a small smile.

At least Luke and Blaze are alive.
