Utterly Shocked (Part 1)

I'm sorry.

I had to.

This just had to be done.

It was the best for the entire family.

That I go away from here.

It was a cold and dark morning, unlikely. But everything today was terrible, just like all the other days. 

I had always felt like an outcast, a stranger in the family, someone who just never fit in at all. Someone who is just...different, weird, strange, an abnormal creature. Like I came from an alien world.

I always thought if I was actually their family member, which I soon learned I was not a member of their family.

As I woke up, I looked at the window in my room. It was so dirty and filled with cobwebs. I glance at my rotten bed. I sigh and wake up.

Actually, my "room" is the dirtiest out of the entire house. Well, they gave me the attic as a room. Which I thought was a little brutal, even for them. But what else did I ever expect from them? Only their cold and harsh words...that's all. 

Even before I step down the rickety and almost-broken stairs, I hear her words, piercing my ear like a needle. 

"Mommy? Can I have cake for breakfast?" I hear ask in a whiny voice.

I barf at the thought of seeing her today—again.

"Of course honey! Now, James, wake up that weirdo. Doesn't he know he has to make breakfast?" I hear my dangerous mom ask my stubborn dad.

"Oh, that kid is just trouble. Why did you even take him?"I hear him ask.

For a second, I thought that was strange.

Why did you even take him?

His words echo through my brain. It was like something else had happened. I thought I was their child, wasn't I?

As I reach downstairs, I was getting prepared to hear shouting and yelling from my mom, dad, and my coward sister. 

"Where have you been? Don't you know your morning chores?" I look at my mom, her eyes open wide.

As I kept staring at her eyes, it was like they were forming the sign of death. 

I shivered and bent down.

"I am so sorry...I didn't mean to be so late." I admit, but she doesn't care.

"Cole you should know better. Now, go help in the kitchen and scrub the entire house clean," he ordered and walked off, but I saw him turning around like he just remembered something. "Also, today is Clarice's birthday, and we will be going to a resort to celebrate it. We might come in another few days, so...keep the house clean." 

"What? How can I stay by myself? Please, I won't make any trouble! Can I please go with you!" I beg him to bring me too.

"Get your filthy hands off me! No. You are not allowed to go. Stay inside the house, and we will write a list of chores you need to do. Now, go on and start making breakfast!" he shooed me away from there like I was just a piece of garbage.

I see my mom and start asking her.

"Please, mom, please! I want to go too! I don't know how to stay without anyone! I am only ten! Please! I will be a good boy–I promise!" I start to wail in front of her.

"Ugh! Clarice, get this boy to shut his mouth! He's so atrocious!" she made faces as if I lived in a pool of garbage, and had just come out right now.

I try to beg them, even more, to not leave me, but Clarice came rushing down to push me away. 

"Get away Cole! You are so disgusting and so...never mind. Just leave my mom alone!" she yelled.

Suddenly, her mom and dad started looking at her, like she had said something wrong. I was confused, but I was so mad that my brain wasn't working at all.

"She's my mom too! Stop acting like you are the princess of this house! You all are the ones who made me a slave. Who made me give up education, school, everything just to be a worker in this house! Clarice, it's your fault for everything! You get all the love and affection, while I get nothing but chores. You all don't even remember my birthday, to you? How can you even be my own mom and dad?" I cup my hands over my mouth.

Now I had said way too much. I should have said it at all...but I couldn't control my feelings. I glance at them, and they all look mad, raging with anger.

I start crying. 

I didn't know what to do.

I was scared, frustrated, upset, devastated...all those words.

"I'm sorry—I didn't mean to! I...I don't know what happened, I was just—"

"Stop talking Cole. You already said what you wanted to say, not I have something to say which will leave you stunned for years." 

I was curious. What will leave me stunned for years? That makes no sense at all. 

Didn't I know everything?

Was there a secret that I...never was told?

"No Clarice, don't tell him. He doesn't deserve to be told the truth." my mom steps in and argues with her.

Ok, now I was completely confused.

"No mom! He has to know the truth soon. I know he was just a failure in your life, but there is plenty of time for him to go away. You two already got what you need! I don't need him in my life at all!" Clarice argued back.

"Jenna, listen to her. We can't keep the truth hiding from him forever, can we? We can just get rid of him. The only reason we looked after him for all these years because we are kind people. Others would have left him outside after they got the money." his words were like hammers. 

Each word he uttered had hit me hard. 

I couldn't believe what he had said.
