“No one’s tracked down this court reporter? She worked for an agency, and you mean to tell me they don’t know where she is? There’s got to be some explanation. We’ve been waiting for this transcript for months.”
“Well, they had her notes, but she hasn’t been located yet. We all know it’s a tough job and, judging from this, I’d check all the hospitals in the vicinity, specifically the psych wards.”
“So, bottom line, are you telling us those are the verbatim stenographic notes for this most important day of this most important trial?”
“Yep. That’s all she wrote.”

Not surprised at the shortlist, this is extremely creative and fun to read, if a little confusing. Again, really enjoyed reading it. Looking forward to reading your other work.

Hi Zatoichi, So happy you stopped by and left an especially nice comment. Yes, Reedsy seems to enjoy it when I go off the rails when I write. Admittedly, it is great fun for me to make sense out of nonsense and the other way around. It's what I enjoy most about writing. There are no limits. Thanks again!

Hi Susan! Congratulations on the shortlist! The story was incredibly overwhelming and beautiful. At the same time. I found myself rereading and notating as I went along, so I can make sure the track everything properly. I especially loved those little pop culture references: “That’s the way uh huh…” I thought the ending was incredibly clever, and it definitely added a fun little piece to the story. Nice work!

Susan, I love the breaks you chose for this story. Line breaks are something of a pet fascination for me, and this one has the best I've seen in a long time.

I just learned how to go about this type of prompt any day. Truly I was thinking about how will go about this work and decided it will take a month to come out with what ends with the same rhythm and decided to respect myself and tackle dialogue.

Hi Philip - I think these prompts stretch all of into different shapes and away from our comforts to try something new. When I have time later today, I'll read your dialogue. Dialogue can be challenging but fun! Thank you for commenting!

Creative even beyond anything I expected from this prompt, Susan. Congratulations again, well deserved!

Chris! Thanks so much for your support and comradery. It really helps break that pattern of write, submit, don't think about it/think about it, nothing, not this week; peek at the prompt, write . . . and again. I always look forward to your comments, in all regards.

This was so much fun, Susan - and so clever in the way each line led to a totally disconnected idea. I’ve just read your comment about being inspired by the court reporter who ‘lost it’ and only wrote nursery rhymes - it’s amazing where our brains will go when we’re under pressure. (It reminds me of a story one of my teachers told us when I was 16 about a student who was so nervous about their French oral exam that they did the whole thing in English with a strong French accent, convinced they were speaking in French!) a well deserved shortl...

Hahaha, that sounds like my french teacher in high school! What would we be without humor! To this day, I wonder what the court reporter assigned to decipher another's notes and coming up with Ring Around the Rosey thought - like, time to go back to school and do something, anything else! Anyway, now you know what accounts for some of my wacky writings. :)

Susan, I’ve been wanting to read this and just got to it. You’re so good at stream-of consciousness writing! Every little snippet leads us to find out what’s next, and discover the ultimate ending. Figured it was somehow related to a court case (knowing just a little of your background), but certainly didn’t expect the ending! Well done. I enjoy any sort of word play, and this is very clever. Thanks, Penelope, I'm glad you enjoyed reading it. It was really fun to piece together, knowing where it would lead (I had the ending in mind before I started with the verbal aerobics). This week's prompts gave us a lot of freedom and stretched the imagination. I'm just pleased readers like you had fun with the outcome! :)

This is such a unique way to handle the prompt, and as others have said a blast of a roller coaster ride. I didn’t have any idea how you were going to wrap it up, but you did so well, and what a loopdy-loop of a mind you introduced us to with that court stenographer. Well done. :)
Reply
Wow, thank you, Molly. I, thankfully, haven't experienced first hand what this poor reporter must have, but I know what it feels like for your mind to want to derail after spending hours capturing other people's words. You try not to scream out loud (can't disrupt the proceedings), so going your own way would be a type of rebellion. Let's hope she gets the help she needs! :D

I like the payoff in the end with the stenographer because I kept wondering where this all would lead. I enjoyed your use of homophones from time to time and the random bit of French thrown in for good measure. Thanks for sharing your story. I thought t would be a difficult prompt, but you made it look easy.

Thank you for your thoughts, David, and the kind words. The idea for this came out of nowhere, really, though the ending was based on real events (second hand but fascinating enough that it came back to me when I saw the prompt.) It was a fun one! :)

This is so clever. And so much fun! Can't imagine how long it must have taken to write and get it all to work. Loved how the ending ties it all up.

Thank you, Wally! First word that comes to mind is the FUN it was to weave all this together and to maintain some sort of a psychotic flow- if that’s not too much of an oxymoron. Enjoyed the prompts!

Susan, I loved the way how you let the last word of every sentence become the first of next sentence. Like a backstitch! Clever!! I’m just having so much fun reading some of the entries for this week’s prompt. It’s like a carnival of creativity. Thanks for sharing.

I knew I'd be reading some interesting stories given the unusual nature of the prompt this week. It was a challenge, and this one completely threw me for a loop. Really impressed with what you did with it. It's entertaining reading and clever word play. You totally stuck the landing, bringing all the chaos together into coherency for the reader (not so much for the trial). Well done!
Reply
hahaha - thanks, Laurel. There's miles of train wreck before you finally get to the end of line, so I'm happy to know you stayed on board. (Pardon the silly analogy but fun is fun) :)
Reply
Well I can see how a court reporter was off the rails. It took me about ten lines, being a little lame, to figure out the pattern but then away it went. Talk about 'the boys in the basement'. My thought reading it was it would be interesting to take this pattern and write a novella with an intricate plot, character, etc. Has that been done before?
Reply
Hmm, that's an interesting question. I purposely tried to make the topics veer away from each other. I think that would be a fascinating read if each sentence connected in a way to tell an actual tale. This was an intentional train wreck - and what fun it was!! Thanks for taking the time, Jack - much appreciated! (And let me know if you find an answer to your neat question.)

A neat experiment for the prompt! A little stream-of-thought. I didn't see the ending coming, but if this is based on real events, well… truth really is stranger than fiction :) Given the opening, I actually imagined it was someone lightly high just surfing the channels on a TV, and where maybe the noise of modern culture kind of strings together into a sort of narrative. Although, I suppose that's one way to describe a courtroom too. The last line is perfect :)
Reply
Hahaha! You understand everything, Michal. It's very befitting of the courtroom environment; a little three-ring circus, a little theater (sometimes a LOT), a little tabloid, a dash of Roman Colosseum, and toss in a puppet show - that's pretty much it. On a good day, you might catch a whiff of To Kill a Mockingbird. It's a moving target, for sure. That last line was a gift sent from somewhere. I still grateful when I read it. A thousand thanks, Michal, as always.
