The sky doesn’t seem to stay dark for long. Every night I feel it becomes short than the one before. This city never seems to sleep with it filled to the brim with people. Being the only vampire in the city has its advantages and disadvantages. While yes, I am able to feed on these low life humans that’ll never be missed or noticed gone, without peace and quiet my mind slowly slips from my grasp. A rage vampire with no sense to stop is a horrific scene that’ll put the entire world into chaos. Not to mention those types of vampires give all the other ones a bad name.
I lay here in my coffin, with the lid closed, and a pillow covering each ear trying to sleep. The loud buses, people talking, animals going off, drive me insane. “GAH!” I scream as I throw the lip open and sit up. “This is utterly annoying!” I run my nails through my long black hair before getting up. All the windows are boarded up and except for the one near the fire escape. That has half a board cover it and the other half covered by a curtain. That is my only entrance and exit to this filth hole. I peak out, squinting my eyes that are blinded by the light, and look around. “It’s extra noisy today.” I snap my fingers, turning into a black cat, and hop out the window to go walk around. The sunlight is very harsh for my fair skin, but walking around as cat with fur to protect it helps.
It seems like I am wondering for hours before seeing a parade appear. “Ah, there is some kind of festival today. That’s what all the noise is about. I wonder what kind it is.” I follow some humans around and see a person at the podium speaking. “Today my people, we will find the imposter and burn him at the steak! There have been numerous vampire sightings here in the city and as your mayor I will bring him to justice!” Everyone cheers and I feel my throat tense up. “Oh shit.” I run back my apartment at full speed. “Gotta pack and leave, damnit.” When I arrive, I notice two a man and young girl peaking into the apartment. “I think this is where the vampire lives. He’s probably a sleep, so we’ll sneak up on him and kill him!” The man whispers as he crawls into the place and pulling her along.
I careful hop into the apartment and meow softly at the girl, pawing at her. “Papa! Look! He has a pet!” She picks me up and snuggles me close. Hmm, she smells rather nice. I have two rules, I don’t drink or kill children, and I don’t kill women. “That’s nice, now help me find him!” The man barks. The way the young girl tenses and reluctantly follows him boils my blood. Abusive. We go into my room and the man kicks the coffin, expecting it to move, but hurts his foot instead. “DAMNIT! What is this thing made of?!” I try to contain my laughter. The little girl steps back, “daddy, we should leave before it comes back.” He turns to her, grabbing her arm, making me fall to the ground, and throws her into the coffin. He begins to undo his belt. “Did you just tell me what to do? I’ll show you who the boss is!” I begin to hiss loudly as she begins to cry. I can’t hold this form much longer.
He swings his belt at me, smacking me in the face. I let out a low growl as smoke appears around me. “The hell is going on here!?” I turn back to my human form, thankfully clothed, and grab the belt as he swings it again. The room grown silent as he starts to back up in fear. “I-It’s you!” I look at the little girl, reaching out to help her up. “Don’t worry, little one, I won’t hurt you.” I say. She hesitates for a moment, but then grabs my hand, and runs behind me for safety. “Bella! Get over here! He’s a monster!” I push her back carefully, making sure my nails don’t cut her. “The only monster I see here, is you.” As I finish my sentence, I appear behind him, grabbing his face with my nails dug into his skin, and my teeth sunk deep into his neck. His screams only last a few second before his lifeless body limps over. I throw him on the ground and look at the little girl who’s just staring at him. “T-Thank you Mister.” I chuckle a bit before wiping my mouth on my sleeve. “You can’t stay here.” She looks up at me and walks over to me, hugging my leg gently. “May I stay with you.” I breath in deep, not sure what the right thing to do is.
I scoop her up suddenly and grab a backpack. “If you come with me there will be rules. But we can’t stay here.” I run to the door and hear some men yelling that they heard screaming. “Hold on tight.” Her grip about chokes me as I jump out of the window, falling 50 feet to the ground. Before we land, the fall seems to get slower and we land like a feather. “H-How did you do that?” I smirk a bit. “I’m magical.” I take off and finally find some woods after traveling by foot. We get to a large tree and I set her down gently, before collapsing. “What’s wrong!?” I lay in the shade and show her my skin that was exposed. “The sunlight… Burns…” She goes to touch it as I black out.
When I awake, the sky is pitch black. “W-what happened?” I look around for the girl and hear her snoring softly against the tree. “This journey is taking an interesting turn. The thousands of years I’ve been on this plant, never once did I foresee myself caring for a young child.” I get up, pick her up, and make my way to the nearest neighborhood. It doesn’t take long before I notice a small neighborhood just ahead and run there. Almost all the houses lights are out but one, so I knock gently. “Oh, I should look normal.” I crack snap my fingers under her and my nails go from pointed to normal, my teeth shrink, and my skin color changes from fair to a tan. This takes a massive amount of energy. Just as I’m finished looking, ‘normal’, the door opens, and a lady stands there in a beautiful evening gown. “Hello, how can I help you?” Her voice rings inside my ears. “H-hello ma’am, my um daughter and I are in need of a place to stay for the night. Would you mind harboring us?” Shock comes across her face as she moves out of the way, “oh of course! Please do come in!” I walk in and the place has an odd odor, but I think nothing of it. “Thank you again, I’ll repay you for this kindness.” She smiles and leads us upstairs, showing us a room. “I apologize but I only have one bed available. Will this su-” I cut her off and smile, “this will be just fine. Thank you again.” She nods and leaves quietly, shutting the door behind her.
I lay her on the bed and open my backpack up. “What size do you wear?” I ask as if she’ll answer. I pull a large t-shirt out of my back and hold it up against her and its way to big. “Perfect!” I close my eyes and change her out of her outfit and put the shirt on her. “That should do it.” I tuck her in and go into the bathroom, kneel down beside the tub, and begin to scrub her clothes clean. After I finish washing her clothes, I put them on the drying rack, dry the tub, and lay in it. I start to fall asleep when I hear voices radiating from the vents. I lean over the tub, close my eyes, and listen. “No officer, I haven’t seen anyone out of the ordinary lately. Just our small community. Yes, if I see anything or one suspicious, I’ll let you know immediately. Thank you and have a good night.” I wonder why she lied. I try not to think to much of it and fall asleep.
Morning comes and I’m woken up by the smell of waffles wafting up from the kitchen. I make my way into the room, she that the girl is gone, and rush downstairs. “Bella!” I yell as I enter the kitchen. I see her sitting down stuffing her face with waffles and the lady Infront of the stove. “Good morning, Sr. Would you like something to eat?” She turns and I nod while sitting down. “Sure, thank you.” She brings two plates over and sets them down. “So, why are the police looking for you?” Her blunt question doesn’t surprise me. “Why did you lie to the police staying you haven’t seemed someone out of the ordinary?” Our questions meet and she smiles, “my name is Anastasia.” I stare at her for a moment before responding. “Vladimir and this is my daughter, Bella.” Anastasia pulls my plate away from me with a large grin. “What an obvious name for a vampire. Your parents couldn’t name you something inconspicuous?” Irritation begins to set in as my fold goes back to normal, no longer needing to hide it. “How did you figure it out? I did ask permission to enter your home, but what stranger wouldn’t if they had no ill intensions? I didn’t feed from you nor the child. I sitting near your god-awful garlic vine which is making my nauseous. So, tell me, how did you figure it out?” She laughed softly, “as you walked up to the bedroom, your reflection didn’t appear in the hall mirror. I saw no bite wounds on the child, so I assumed you meant no harm.” I blink curiously, “where is there a mirror? I didn’t notice one when I arrived.” She points and I look over at it shocked. “OH, guess I was tired. So, could you answer me something, what is the odor in the house? I can’t figure it out.” Her eyes rolled as she pets Bella’s head. “You can’t figure it out? That’s a shame. What female creature do you know of that would be just as beautiful, maybe more, that a human?” I stare at her and get up quickly. “Calm down! I won’t hurt you, either of you. I saved you all because a vampire did for me once. I know your kind isn’t all bad. Unlike mine.” I sit back down slowly, “show me.” Ears pop out and a long bushy tail appears. “What a cute werewolf. Mind if we stay here with you?” She nods and we plan out how were going to call ourselves a ‘family’.
A few weeks pass by and the neighborhood has been extremely quiet. “Bella, why don’t you go out and play today?” She looks at me, shaking her head no. “Why not? Don’t the other kids play with you?” Just then, a cold chill goes down my spine. “Bella, go to your room.” She looks up confused, “you just told me to go outside though.” I gesture for her to go upstairs and go out-front where Anastasia is standing. “What did you do?” The smell of blood fills the air and she fur is covered in it. “What you didn’t have the balls to do.” My eyes turn black. “You’re not touching her.” I growl. Her smirk widens as she runs towards me. “You were supposed to kill them and be taken away!” She screams. I grab her by the neck when she comes in range and slam her down into the ground, causing a crater to form. “Why!?” Her back legs come up and push against my stomach, thrusting me into the doorway. “That’s none of your business!” she gets up slowly, as do I. “It is my business, cause if I would have been taken away you would have had Bella. What were you planning on doing with her!?” I watch her moments and she dart past me to go up the stairs. I grab ahold of her fur, ripping it out, and biting into her repeatedly.
As we get up the stairs she flips over, landing on her back with me under her. I wrap my arms around her neck and place my hands in her mouth, trying to pull her jaw apart to break it. “You’re not getting ahold of her!” I struggle as she flops like a fish. “Watch me!” She flips up onto her paws, throwing me through a wall. The pain rushes through my body, but I quickly get up when I hear Bella screaming. I run into her room and see Anastasia hold her up by her hair and drooling. “Over my dead body mutt!” I hold my hands out and start to physically change. She drops Bella back on the bed and charges at me. Her claws swipe at me, but I grab ahold of her wrist with my claws. Our eyes meet and surprise shows in her. “A vampire has the ability to transform into ANY beast!” I shove my similar body into her and thrust us out the window.
We struggle in the streets, trashing all the houses, ripping each other apart for hours until I pin her down to the asphalt. “I’ll give my life to protect that child. Which means you may no longer be allowed to live yours.” I bite down on her neck with my wolf like teeth and rip it open. I slowly get up and make my way to the house, limping, changing back to normal, and falling on the ground. “B-Bella.”
Bella’s voice echoes into my ears as I begin to wake. “Hmmm what happened? Where am I?” I look up at her and an officer stands behind her. “Son, are you okay?” He asks. I slowly get up, dizzy. “I’m fine.” I pull Bella close to me. “Don’t worry young man, I’m here to help. You did this small place a favor by getting rid of that witch. She has been terrorizing us for years. Kill all the small children. Please, come stay with me a while until your comfortable to move out on your own. You are your daughter will be safe. We don’t have any monsters here; I promise you that.” I shake a bit. “Thank you.” He helps us up while putting an arm around me and takes me back to his home.
The last few years in this small neighborhood have been somewhat peaceful. Whenever a threat to the community appeared, I took care of it. I keep this place safe for Bella. By doing so the chef of policed nominated me as the mayor like figure. Not going to lie, it’s been nice feeling acceptance for once. It’s nice living in a place where it’s not noisy, over crowded, or sketchy. I’ve found my home and I plan to live like this for the rest of eternity and raise the bloodline that Bella leaves behind. That’s the only way I can truly thank her.
