Samantha stared at the computer screen with tripidation. She really needed to seal the deal before her grandfather returned from overseas in a few days! The cursor blinked repeatedly, leaving a dry taste in her mouth as she waited for a response. Morphius hissed at her vying for her attention , thus creating more tension as she chewed her once pristine nails down to the nub. "YOUR BID HAS BEEN ACCEPTED" flashed across her computer screen just as she was about to walk over to the kitchenette to feed poor Morphius. Ignoring the now cranky f...
Most of my friends had normal jobs during normal hours. But not me. I preferred working when most of the city lay sleeping. Of course I wasn't the only one on the "graveyard shift”, but it was a lot less "peopley" then being on dayshift. I guess you could say that I was destined to be a night owl from the very first moment I entered this world, arriving at exactly 11:11pm on a quiet Sunday night. My poor mother suffered greatly through my insistence of needing to sleep all day, and up feeding all night. In the end she had to hire a nanny jus...

I never felt like I belonged anywhere. I even felt alienated from my own family. My parents never did anything to make me feel this way. It was all me. With loving intentions, Michael and Mirella Paterson (my folks), tried sending me to various types of psychologists to help me to figure out where these thoughts and feelings were coming from. Of course therapy didn't work on me. I don’t know why it would when I didn't know what was wrong with me to begin with! I looked into alternate therapies ranging from the downright weird to so bizarre t...

Mindy-Sue, Lennon, myself and Greg had been friends since high school. Known as "The nerdy bunch" because we all wore thick-rimmed glasses and always had our noses in a book. We really didn't care what people thought. We just knew that there was a certain chemistry between us that worked. It was inevitable that years later we would all end up in similar jobs as we took all of the same classes at high school and in College. What we didn't expect was us coming together as couples. Mindy-Sue paired up with Greg and myself with Lennon. It kind o...

We all sat silently as the Commander walked towards the podium with an official gold envelope tucked into the palm of his hand. No-one dared breathe let alone talk when it came to the all-important "Moon raffle". The Commander surveyed the room, gazing at the sea of faces with their eyes all fixed on him. This was his tenth year of announcing the lucky winner. The person that gets to quite literally leave all of their earthly possessions behind in pursuit of something "out of this world". "Number 273190, could you please step forward to clai...

You kept staring at me, across a crowded , smoke-filled room. I couldn't seem to look away no matter how hard I tried. My friends each grabbed an arm in an attempt to pull me off the dance floor. I stood firm , transfixed .Nothing and no-one could pull me from my spot. I had never experienced such a strange state of paralysis in my life! Megan and Tully had been at me for weeks to stop mulling around the house and get back to my first love, which of course is dancing. I didn't have it in me. I truly didn't. I was exhausted both mentally and...
She stood at the departure gates, ticket and passport in hand. Nervously contemplating the journey ahead. It had been a long time coming. Thirty years to be exact. Sheena felt herself falter as a wave of dizziness and nausea struck her body and her senses, out of the blue! The kindly gentleman standing behind Sheena , who just happened to be a doctor, recognizing the signs of someone about to faint, caught her as she felt herself falling into the darkness that enveloped her. Coming to, just moments later. Sheena felt her face flush bright r...

Temperance stared at the newly finished manuscript placed neatly on her editor's desk. It had taken a lot of half eaten meals, endless cups of herbal tea, and six months spent in isolation in a log cabin, nestled in amidst a rather impressive pine forest. Yet Temperance did not feel triumphant in her achievement. At best she felt as though she could have put more into it. It may just be her inner critique talking, which sounded a lot like her dead Uncle. An accomplished author with many prize winning novels to boost! Even when the cheq...

My feet were aching and my purse was looking a lot lighter than it had earlier on in the evening. But I wanted this night to last forever. Not just because it was my birthday, or that it was the first time i had gone on a wild night out since my ex and i broke up 6 months earlier. It was because I was finally free to be me! I had spent most of my last relationship running around and bending over backwards, just to make sure my man felt happy and loved.Fast forward eleven years later...It felt so good to let my hair hang loose, to dance the n...

Patricia was in a grumpy mood. Being the oldest of eight children did not always mean you got the best of everything. With their beloved mother fallen ill, and their dad away on business, Patricia was given the task of getting her younger siblings organised for school. Not to mention the seven lunches she had to pack and the seven sets of faces and teeth she had to check were cleaned! And to top it off, she had to prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner!Sixteen was supposed to be a magic age of hanging with friends, skipping school and talking a...

My Heart felt the pull of "you" long before I met you. It was as though we were always meant to meet. But with life and other distractions constantly throwing us off course, we always seemed to end up further and further away from each other. So far in fact, that we lived in opposite parts of the world! I would dream of you night after night, always in the same setting where we would be seated in a French styled cafe Crème De Le Cocoa, Located in the northeast of Florida. You would order the sweet treat "Southern Belle”, a rich gooey pe...

Denny, Ferris, Lonnie and Joe, were all present and accounted for. Thank the Gods! I don't know what I would have done if I had lost any of them! This world was already in a dark place and didn't need my grief added to the growing list of misery. It all began one starry night… Someone seriously fucked up! And I know that I was just one of the many wanting to rip this arseholes head off! All he had to do was follow one simple instruction! For chrissakes, Talk about a total screw up! "Momma you gotta let this go! He aint worth it!Oh Denny...

Ariel woke up with a sour taste in her mouth. Memories of the night before came flooding back, as she tried to rinse her mouth out with the strongest mouthwash she could find in her bathroom cabinet. Her parents were coming to visit later on in the afternoon and she could not afford to let them see her fall apart. Not after telling them she was doing so well since moving to her own apartment in the city over 6 months ago.Agatha and Marcus DuPont loved their daughter Ariel, but sometimes she left them no choice but to loathe her as well. Of c...

Dear Diary,It's now currently twelve after midnight and my brain just won't switch off! I even made myself a camomile tea to wind down with. But alas, here I am still wide awake and going nuts over the constant thoughts invading my mind!I tried counting sheep but then my mind wandered off to the time I spent on my best friend Tracey Macmillan’s farm back when we were both 6 graders. She had a pet sheep named Woolly Mammoth and she was quite a hefty sized ewe I can tell you that!We would spend hours racing around the paddocks with Woolly Mamm...

I am never one to complain, but ...I am really not a big fan of daylight savings! I always end up feeling as though I either get too much sleep or not enough! And not to mention the hunger pains between meal times because my body has to adjust to waiting an extra hour! Priscilla my Burmese "soul animal" is not happy with her meal times being changed either! I mean she is royalty after all! She has a particular routine she likes to follow and if by chance it gets interrupted, hell hath no claws like a Burmese cat not pampered to her liking!Wh...
