Theodore wasn't into competitions really. He just said that he does to appease his mom. He got called into a little competition from school to go to Canada for a baseball thing. Who knew Canada liked baseball? Apparently Theodore could win one thousand moo la's if he did. So he had no choice but to accept with his mom constantly putting pressure on him to accept. Next thing he knew he was on a plane from Utah to Canada. As Theodore found his seat next to his baseball competitors, the plane took off. They were on the plane for about a half hour when Theodore decided to look out the window. But what he saw wasn't land. But the big open sea.
Theodore looked around and went to the group's supervisor, "Okay not trying to freak you out but we are above the ocean and aren't we supposed to be um above land?"
The supervisor looked out the window and his eyes widened. He stood up and raced to the pilot's door. Right when he went to knock on the hard metal door the intercom turned on.
A raspy voice came on, "So you figured us out huh? Well we knew we wouldn't make it that far without you noticing. Guess it's a suicide mission after all."
The man laughed maniacally. There was a thump and the teenagers all went tumbling to the ground. Theodore looked around and saw the other passengers weren't budging. Next thing he knew they disappeared. They were holograms.
"Who has enough money for this stuff?"
Screamed Theodore. He knew it wasn't the best time for joking around but he had to get his mind focused again. There was an ear-numbing crash and before they knew it the plane was filling up with water.
A blond girl screamed, "We must have had a pretty big impact with the water!"
Theodore said back, "Why are you screaming?"
"My ears are not really working!"
As the instructor was on his phone dialing 911 and freaking out. Some of the other kids were taking action while another was uh... crying under a plane seat. A tall guy who looked around 16 was close to getting the door open and a guy and girl who looked like twins were gathering luggage.
The twin girl said, "Hurry! A plane takes 5 minutes to sink altogether! Get a move on!"
As the teenagers grabbed as much as they could Theodore heard a ripping sound.
The blonde girl was ripping off plane seat cushions, "What the heck are you doing?"
"We can use the plane seat cushions as life rafts!"
Before they knew it the tall guy had opened the plane door and a layer of water rushed in. As the group all got out of the plane (including the crying kid.) the plane sank completely behind them. They were about a few yards away from the plane. But the sudden extra tons added to the bottom of the ocean was enough to make the ocean a bit rough. They were all soaked and already tired. It surprised Theodore with all the training he did for baseball. As soon as the ocean toned down everyone started to relax. Well relax as much as everyone could. It was the afternoon and night time would come sooner than they wanted it too. The twins swam to everyone and gathered them together.
"What are you doing? Don't touch my raft, I might fall!"
Theodore knew he sounded like a child but his father passed at sea when he was working in the navy. His ship went down, he guessed. That's at least what the letter said.
The twin girl rolled her eyes, "Don't be a big baby. If we can get in a big circle then we should be able to withstand the waves if they get big."
The blond girl chirped up, "Aw like what sea otters do?"
"Uh yeah something like that."
As the teenagers all got into circle formation everyone went to sit on their cushions. As they all held hands the sun was drying their shirts a bit. Everyone looked uncomfortable with the silence.
So Theodore decided to break it, "So... Can anyone contact the police or something?"
The twin boy spoke, "Our supervisor here tried to but those guys on the plane knew what they were doing with WiFi."
"So in other words we are stuck here forever?"
The twin girl spoke up, "Whoa whoa not forever. We might be here for a while. The had to pick up that a plane crashed in the middle of the ocean on their radar."
The crying kid sobbed. It was a girl now that Theodore could actually see her face. She looked about their age. She had neck length black hair and brown eyes. At least that's what Theodore thought. Her eyes were too puffy to really see. The tall guy was patting her uncomfortably on the back.
Theodore looked back and forth between all of them, "So if we are going to be here for a while can I at least get to know your names?"
Everyone shifted on their cushions for a while.
The twin girl sighed, "My name is Eva."
The twin boy followed behind Eva, "I'm Ethan."
The twins looked like they hadn’t had a good night’s sleep in weeks. They had bags under their eyes and their hair was messy. Ethan’s hair was brown, almost reaching his green eyes. Eva had the same brown hair but it was shoulder length and put in a ponytail. She also had dark blue eyes unlike her brother’s green eyes.
The tall guy said in a deep voice, "Roger."
Roger looked like he could be a football player. He had big arms and legs. Totally built on muscle. Theodore was in awe. He had always wanted to look like that. But no matter what he did he was still left a skinny 16 year old. But Roger also had blond hair and brown eyes. If he ever went to Theodore's high school he would have gotten all the girls in the palm of his hand.
The girl quickly added after Roger, "I'm Addison."
Addison had blond hair and blue eyes. She was short and had a cute smile.
Everyone looked at the crying kid.
She kept crying so Theodore decided that he would go, "I'm Theodore. But you can call me Theo."
Theodore looked like a wet rag. His brown hair was over his eyes and his shirt was sticking to his torso. Which made him look like a stick. He had brown eyes and a single freckle on his right cheek.
The supervisor went.
He was so quiet that everyone forgot he was here, "I am Oscar."
Oscar was a middle aged dude with blond hair and blue eyes. He had a stubble beard and a black baseball hat.
Everyone was quiet for a bit when surprisingly the crying girl spoke, "My name is Emily."
They all looked at her a bit shocked. It was out of the blue. She even stopped crying.
Emily had black hair, brown eyes, and now that Theodore could see her face better He realized Emily had a faded red birthmark on left her cheek to her forehead.
Theodore said in a forced light tone, "Well we have a lot of names starting with E here."
Eva rolled her eyes, "Yes captain obvious. Can't believe you got accepted into that outdoor survival competition."
Everyone except her brother looked at her with quizzical expressions.
She looked around at everyone, "Why are you all looking at me that way?"
Theodore spoke up, "I got called here to do a baseball competition."
Addison said, slightly scared, "I got called here for a badminton tournament."
Roger said, "I got called here for a musical audition."
Emily said much more freaked out, "I got called for a chess tournament!"
We all looked at her, "Chess? Really?"
Emily looked at us with her nose scrunched and said in a bitter tone, "Yes chess."
The group all knew it was better not to get into it. Eva was digging around in her luggage like nuts.
Everyone looked at her until she said, "Ah ha!"
As she pulled out a big rubber thing that took up most of her bag. It made Theodore wonder why she was rustling around in her bag so much before.
He decided to shrug it off and talk, "What is that thing?"
Eva rolled her eyes once more, "It's a lifeboat."
"Wait, you carry a lifeboat in your luggage?"
Ethan spoke this time, "Well we had to be prepared if we were going to the Outdoor Survival Competition. We were planning to win."
Emily said in a hushed tone, "Something touched my foot." Everyone froze.
Oscar said, "Everyone calm down, it was probably a piece of seaweed or a fish."
Addison said in a shaky voice, " Yeah just a fish."
Eva was starting to blow into the air raft. It was a small little boat by how it was looking so far. Theodore wondered if the luggage would even fit. Everyone took turns blowing up the raft. When it was all the way blown up everyone piled on. Ethan got rope out of his bag and tied the plane cushions to the boat with the luggage resting on top of it. As everyone got on the teenagers eyed the water.
Eva spoke again, “Why did you freak out over the water Theodore?”
Theodore noticed she said it kind of sourly. He decided it was probably best to approach this cautiously. Eva had something very intimidating about her.
Theodore decided to tell them why he was afraid of water even if it sounds babyish, “My father died last year at sea. His boat got taken down from disturbed waters. Guess it makes me a bit jumpy in the water.”
Everyone except Oscar seemed to nod like they understood what Theo was talking about.
Theodore looked around suspiciously, “I see that you all are a bit jumpy around the water too.”
Everyone nodded and said at the same time while looking at the water, “My dad died at sea too.”
They all looked around at each other and sat there shocked. Our faces must have showed that as well because Roger began laughing and soon everyone all joined in.
All except for Eva, “Doesn’t any of this bother you guys? We have been kidnapped, stranded at sea, and left to die. And we just HAPPEN to figure out that most of our fathers died at sea?!”
Everyone went quiet again. It was suspicious and oddly specific. That most of their fathers happened to die at sea and that they all came here on the same day for absolutely different reasons? Theodore was not buying it, “I have to say it is strangely particular. Let’s compare notes about our fathers. Maybe we can figure something out.”
As everyone talked and filled in all the dots they all figured out their fathers went to the same training academy, all got the same rank in the military, and that they all liked bowling. Oscar was silent for all of it and eventually fell asleep. The teen's couldn’t blame him. They were exhausted themselves and night was falling faster and faster. As everyone got situated to fall asleep safely they felt a little bumpiness in the water and saw the last thing any of them wanted to see. Great White Sharks.
