Superpowers don’t always have to be something out of a comic book or movie. They can be from someone you admire, like a parent or a sibling. Someone you consider a hero, like a policeman, firefighter, or EMS person. Anything that makes an everyday person stand out to you. Something someone has taught you in life. Or someone that gives you a new purpose in life. In my case the people I see with superpowers are my mom and my daughter.

Let’s start with my mom. Why do I think she has superpowers. Well for one, she’s my mom, why wouldn’t she. That’s an obvious answer anyone would give. My reasoning behind why she has superpowers is a little bit more complex than that. Ever since I was little I never really got to see my mom because she was always working. She missed all my firsts as a child, and many school events. Really the only thing she could attend were some night concerts, if they were late enough, and plays I was in with drama club. The only big milestone event she was able to attend, was my high school graduation.

Because of that I have grown to see my mother as a very strong woman. Yes she missed many of my life events, but she made up for it with all the time we spend together, now that I’m an adult. Yes we butt heads but at the end of the day we are best friends. The superpowers I observe from her are the fact that she is very strong, and persistent. She never lets anything stand in her way. She wants something she gets it, no matter what the cost. She is strong willed and determined. When something is pushing her down to her weakest point, she fights back and overcomes. She never lets anything overcome her. Maybe in the moment she will, but it never lasts long. She is the type of woman I would love to grow into, though I know I never will. She has pushed me to be like her though we both know it would never happen. She is the one everyone fears, but respects. And everyone wishes they had her as their mom. She has taught me so many things. She has taught me how to be a strong, independent woman. She has taught me to fight for what I want in life.

There are days when I don’t know what I would do without her. She is my rock, and my shoulder to cry on. She is the one who has told me to fight for what I want in life and never give up. So in mind she is a “superhero”, and she does have “superpowers”.

As for my daughter she has many of her own “superpowers”. She has given me a means for my life now. She pushes me to strive to be who I really want to be. Granted this whole COVID stuff kind of put what I really want to do on halt, but I still am trying to push to do what I really want to do. The day I found out I was pregnant with her is when she gained her “superpowers”. I wanted to better my life for her. I knew the position I was at the time of my pregnancy was not a good place for her. I left her abusive, alcoholic sperm donor, and moved back home. After she was born I joined the local fire department and enrolled into an EMT class. Of course with a lot of hard work and perseverance I passed for her. I got a job three months out of the class. I was so happy being on an ambulance, until that job came crashing down because of some shady stuff.

I then went for my CNA. Even though I am doing that now, I don’t find it as rewarding as being on an ambulance. And because my daughter pushes me to be a better person in everything I do, my plan after COVID lets up is to get back on an ambulance and go for my paramedic. I have a better chance at getting a job closer to home as a paramedic. I just want to show her that her “superpowers” of pushing me to be the best person I can be and push me to do what I really want to do in life is possible. And that she can do the same thing if she puts her mind to it, she can do anything her heart desires. She is like my mother in the aspect of teaching me to fight for what I want in life. She is my reason to fight for what I want in life. I honestly don't know where I'd be in life if I didn't have that little girl.

Her other “superpower” has shown me that even though it’s just her and I we are okay and don’t need a man in our lives. I mean yes it would be nice for her to have a father figure in her life, other than my father. But she knows that I play both rolls and that we are stronger that way. She is such a strong, smart little girl. She has shown everyone her “superpowers”, which I think she has gotten from her grandmother. She has shown me so many new things to life, that I would have never seen without her. She in herself is a superpower. She is the superpower being that of giving my life a new meaning and a purpose. I can’t thank her enough for that.

See, so it doesn’t matter if the person who has superpowers that you idolize is from a comic. Most people only see those. There are the few that see the everyday people that have superpowers. Either they say it’s the first responders on the front lines, or its just someone that helps their community. In the rare case its those people nearest and dearest to you that show you that anyone can have superpowers.
