Adaline woke up on the white sand, looking up at a little girl in a pair of faded blue jeans that had been stained with dirt and blood. The girl’s purple hoodie had a rip at the sleeve. She had bandages wrapped around her head, covering one of her eyes. The girl’s one blue eye, soulless and death-like, watched as the world around her went on. The second eye was under a layer of band-aids that were a whiteish-grey as if they needed to be changed. The girl’s face had an emotionless stare to it like she was lost in thought, “Why are you here, mother?” The girl was from one of Adaline’s failed attempts to write a good horror story. Adaline stood up and brushed the sand off her jeans, “The story worlds are in peril. Ethan is over his head,” Adaline started to paste back and forth as she continued, “A world where there is no pain or sorrows can’t be real!” The little girl watched as Adaline rambled on about Ethan when she noticed pieces of paper blowing past, riding the wind as if it had become a horse. She bent down as one piece of paper landed on the sand, “Mother?” Adaline turned to see the look of confusion on her face as she held out the paper...
The paper was from the first Pens of Fate world, where Ethan there was now dead. The world is now a complete wasteland. Without a conflict, there can’t be a story. The original Ethan’s house was now torn and in ruins...
Adaline took the girl by the hands and locked eyes with her, “Do not let anyone follow me. If anyone comes by looking for me, do not let them though.” Adaline then took off into the woods...
That girl had been on the island her whole life. She wandered into a small clearing where time had stopped. This was her world. Adaline never finished her story so the island had become a scrap yard for the hopeless stories that time had forgotten. The girl went to her spot and the world began to move again...
The cold autumn wind picked up red and orange leaves and carried them over the paved road. The road went on for miles and cut through deep woods of green and grey. The road ended just outside the afternoon sun’s reach. An old building of decay and faded red bricks stood in the shadows. The broken glass from the windows shimmered on the dirt. In the front of the building,a big tree. The tree had broken rope tied to one of the tree’s branches. A few feet from the tree, laying on its side in a patch of faded grass, stood a black tier. The tire was a part of the broken tire string. The tree’s blown bark had a caving of a heart in it. The building, old and smelled of death, loomed over the small girl. The girl’s face had an emotionless stare to it like she was lost in thought. Memories of the room with the horrible machines that made a loud mm sound kept her and the other children up at night.
At that moment, a nun walked towards the girl. The nun, thin and full of beauty, walked with grace towards the smiling child. The nun, a woman in her mid-twenties, kneaded before the girl, tried to fight back tears. The girl had now had a look of confusion as the two walked into the building.
A long hallway led the two to an old wooden door at the end. The door creaked as it opened. The room, small with one broken window, held the horrible machines. The children stood against the furthest wall while men in white robes stood in a circle in the middle of the room. The nun started to beg the men in white as one grabbed one of the children and pulled him into the middle of the circle. One of the men walked over to a table covered in test tubes and stabbed a needle with light green fluid inside of it. He then walked over to the nun and stabbed her in the neck with the needle. The children’s screams were heard for miles, but when the authorities came it was too late.
The room had blood stains that covered everything. The bodies of the men in white robes were torn and parts were everywhere...
Zack looked at Harper with wide eyes, “WHAT DO YOU MEAN ADALINE ISN’T HERE!” Dan stood by the clubroom’s window, watching Ethan stand below in the courtyard, “He might have done something to her,” he said as he pointed with his head towards Ethan. Zack shook his head, “That can’t be. I was with Addie the whole time.” Angel turned to Zack who was pacing back and forth, “Addie would have told us if she knew Ethan was going to kill her.” Everyone became quiet as they stared at each other. Dan turned back to the window, “HEY!” Ethan stood in the courtyard in front of a portal, “HE HAS ADALINE’S BOOK!” Zack rushed to his side, “Oh boy!” Ethan stepped through the portal...
The girl had left her spot to stare at the waves, lost in her thoughts. She longed for her own world and to get off the island, but Adaline was too busy trying to stop Ethan that she can’t take care of herself. Writing was the only thing that helped Adaline with her depression meaning that if she gets lost in one of her stories, the Adaline in the real world will be in trouble. The girl looked back on when she saw Adaline. Adaline was asleep on the sand but you could tell she hadn’t slept in days. Her left arm had turned a shade of light pink and black ink started to form a tattoo just above her wrist. It looked like a wolf paw. The girl’s blue eye widened at that memory. The curse was still in her veins...
Zack led the group through each world in search of Adaline when they saw the girl standing by the sea, “Hey!” When the girl turned around and Zack knew that Adaline was in danger. The girl led them to an old ship that traveled through all the worlds. Zack turned to her, “Will you come with us? I’m sure Addie will work on your world once this whole thing is over.” That was the first time in a long time that the girl smiled...
