Adventure American Coming of Age

Goodbye.

Chapter 1. Walk With Me

Walk with me he said, a cold and dark misty morning 1862, older than me by 10 years or so, My Jim was 28 and I 18, married only six months now.

I so small next to him and I use love to up to him as if he could protect me form all that was happening in our world.

we walked and walked, and talked about everything and nothing.

He said I must tell you something now, I smiled and said ,look at the small bird caught in that small brier my love, help him please before he die.(he smiled at me with tenderness and did as I asked.

Again he said let us walk my love, and we talk about some things, i smiled and said yes, but did you notice my new dress I made just for you, with all your favorite colors, he yes oh yes and that small brown patch you made as a pocket Mach your eyes. I smiled at him.

He said my love please let me speak, no need my love, you want to say goodbye, but the words will break my heart.

you said goodbye when we took this walk in the mist of this late night.

Let us just hold each other and say it this way.

the war soon will be over.

Chapter 2. Tenderness

We stood there for hours it seemed, then walked back home, it was was summer, the due was lovely and fresh on my skin, on my face.

He went and fed the animals, went into the other part of the big house we had of six rooms, and his mama and papa, lived with us, since the war, Jim could not have them live alone.

My Jim, my tender hearted man.

I started to make a fine breakfast as my Jim loves, my fresh coffee, my fresh ham, fresh biscuits he could eat all day, with a smile he would sneak a few in his pockets for treat for himself later, as he worked in the farm. But the day he was quite and i singing as always as not to alarm the folks.

He so tall and I so small, he bent down and picked me up and kissed me as never before, I was with no words, but felt his goodbye in my soul.

I thought to myself, how will i stand alone when he leave, who can stand by me when we have our first child. Will I lose him? Will he come back? So much went through my heart when he kissed me.

chapter 3. My Emptiness

A knock came to the door, a tall man in uniform and very formal, good day he said, Mam, is this the home of General James Anderson?

I had nothing to say, I only felt emptiness at that moment.

I said James Anderson lives here, yes., I was very confused ,James came to the door and said yes, A salute first to my husband form this man,

I am General James Anderson, he handed to him papers, he said, your papers of commission sir, Report no later then Friday. All you need is there, and you will be escorted to the man himself. Jim said thank you and they saluted each other, and the door closed.

I looked at my husband for a moment and he looked at me and he said let us take a walk, I said not now.

The day was sunny and perfect for laundry, as I was taking it out I felt a hand reach down to mine, and words so kind, lets take a walk, I smiled and said, its a wonderful day to walk by the clothes line and talk, he laugh his laugh and he carried the wash, and we talked.

He asked, do you have any questions for me, my love?

I smiled and said will you make good money as a General, I am , he laughed to. I am a Lt. General, I will make 748 a month, I smiled.

Now he said do have anything you want to ask?

I said you had a reason not to inform me, who you were all this time. You had a reason why you did not tell that you were still active in military life after West Point.

He was quite, and he said all to protect our lives and information only few could know, and even now I can not tell you what is going on with this war.

But know this my love you will be by me every day I am gone, until i come home to you, now let us hang these clothes. I must do some chores and we must eat and I must get some things ready for Friday.

That day the son came down, the family had supper together as always but everyone was so still.

James asked with a laugh did someone die? no one is talking, everyone started to laugh.

Jim, helped clean dishes, and said I will miss these little things, I said you will miss more then this, he said I know, but this is not goodbye.

I sat by the fireplace with his mother as we were quilting baby blankets and things, the men were reading about the war the how it was going and talking about what they need to plan for the families future. if things fail with Jim, dying and other things.

The night was so still and no one wanted to talk it seemed. We all were in different places, and we just said good night.

But Jim was up

I was alone and thought what was going to to happen, and will i always feel this empty.

Chapter 4. The Letter(You'll Be In My Heart)

I got up before dawn, and started with pen and paper,

Dearest James, as I called you when you were in West Point, and I met you walking by my parents home, and you dropped some of your books, and I was outside. I went to you and helped you pick them up. You said for so small you are strong, we smiled.

And you walked away, and turned and smiled, and came back and said may I call on You.

so the journey began, married and with a baby on the way, and a war at our door step.

How fast time has moved, I still hear you say on our wedding day, no matter where life takes us, we will be together, and I will always be by you, we will never say goodbye. I will protect you until the end of time, just take my hand and hold it tight, and when I am not with you someday, you can still feel my embrace, for you will always be in my heart for always, I will always be there with you.

As I was writing i, felt a hand on my solder, and a kiss on my nick, and here you are.

Nomi, why are you writing to me, I said nothing, but I started to cry.

He said don't start your crying it will be alright, just take my hand, and I will protect you, no matter what wars come between us. No matter how far, you'll be in my heart always, and if tomorrow comes , you'll still be here now and forever more.

But for today no goodbye, and I may not be with you tomorrow but I will always be here with you and you'll feel me, always .

And when you hold our child in your arms look over your shoulders and I will be there, this bon between us can never be broken even death.

He kissed me and we smiled.

Chapter 5. No Goodbyes

The days went by and Friday came, he said, remember you are in my heart and no goodbye, I my not be with you but hold on,

he kissed his mama and hugged his father, he came to me, and said, for one so small you are strong.

No Goodbyes

The weeks went by and no news form him, a months passed and now we had a son, the days became months, and only two letters, on one April day a letter , a man well dressed and came to the door, Mrs. Anderson. I new, he walked quietly away.

April 4th,1862

The letter reads, my small one, it seems forever since I call you that, our son must be growing, if you have received this letter I am with our Lord.

The battle has been hard, my men suffer so, I can only think about you and all we had planed, but God's way are not ours. Your bible sits by me every night with our sweet wedding picture, and the rose you sent in your last letter.

Now Take my hand and take a walk with our son, I am there through him. You'll be in my heart always.

No Goodbyes.
