Marlena searched for her favorite book, but couldn’t find it.”Weird, I put it there before.” Marlena thought. Then she saw a girl about her age holding her favorite book. The girl looked up from the book and smiled at Marlena. “Hi?” The girl said nervously. “Hi, is that book good?” Marlena asked. “Yeah, it’s really good.” She replied. “By the way, I’m Cara. The girl held out her hand. Marlena held Cara’s hand and shook it lightly. “And I'm Marlena.” She said. They sat down together and chatted about how the main character in the book had lots of annoying siblings. Marlena and Cara giggled too much so the librarian kicked them out of the door. They broke out laughing. Marlena felt that she had made a friend. “Well, I have to go.” Cara said softly. “I guess maybe I’ll see you tomorrow!” Marlena beamed as she skipped back to her house. Marlena gasped as she heard what her parents had been talking about for a whole week. Her heart sank inside of her. “This can’t be true, this can’t be true!” She whispered to herself. She quickly and quietly ran upstairs to her room before her parents knew she was awake. Marlena lied in bed feeling restless. “What would happen to my school? My friends? My home?” Questions raced through her head. The next morning, her parents went to work early because of a work shift. Her dad was a doctor and her mom was a nurse. They met each other when they were doing surgery on a person with a knife in his arm. Marlena grabbed her red backpack and dashed out the door. She normally walked to school because her house was just around the corner. As she walked, she saw the popular, rude, girls. Their names were: Chloe, Alica, and Shara. She tried to avoid them to avoid trouble, but they were impossible to get away from. Marlena ran into the building. This time luck was on her side, but would it last a day? After her school, Marlena was walking home until she heard some noise behind her. She turned around and saw that it was the girl she had met at the library. “Hi, want to come over to my house?” Marlena asked. “Sure!” Once they were at Marlena’s house, Marlena took her key out of her pocket and unlocked the door. The two of them walked in and took off their shoes. Cara slumped down in a big fluffy chair that Marlena had in her living room. “Oh my goodness, you have a wonderful house.” Cara said, amazed at the sight of Marlena’s house. “I bet it's nothing compared to Chloe’s.” Marlena said with a sigh. “No really, Marlena.” She said. Marlena almost choked on the air itself. Marlena sat down next to Cara in the same looking chair. Marlena looked down at her knees. “Marlena?” Cara stopped admiring Marlena’s house and looked at Marlena confused. Silent tears came rolling down Marlena’s cheeks. A tear dropped onto Marlena’s lap from her cheek. “Marlena, why are you crying?” Cara wondered. “I'm going to move away.” Marlena admitted. Cara gasped. “What do you mean? You're joking right?” Cara giggled. “No,” Marlena replied. “How far?” Cara stopped giggling. “To CT.” Marlena said, shaking. “No matter what happens I will keep in touch with you! Don’t worry!” Cara assured Marlena. “Let's talk on Friend Chat!” Marlena beamed. “Ok!” Cara said happily. Marlena and Cara exchanged phone numbers. Cara took Marlena’s arm and brought her to the library. Today was the final day of seeing Cara. “Marlena, your mom and I have decided to move to CT. Start packing please.”Said Marlena’s dad. “Ok, Dad.” Marlena said remembering what Cara had said. “I have to go to school.” Marlena said. “Ok then we will pack. Have fun at school!” Marlena’s dad tried to cheer Marlena up. She grabbed her red backpack and ran to school more excited than ever. She ran to classroom 212, put her backpack away in her cubby, and sat down in her chair. Marlena hated cubbys. She wished that the one year until she went into middle school would go away quickly so then she would be in middle school and she would get to have super cool lockers. Mrs. Morton walked up to the whiteboard and started talking about five digit multiplication and division problems. Marlena tried her best to listen to Mrs. Morton, but the kids behind Marlena continued their conversation talking about something. Marlena got so irritated that she could hardly hear what Mrs. Morton was saying and just started listening to the kids. “Do you know about that girl named Marlena?” One said. “Yeah, that girl helped Cara.” Another added on. “Good thing that Marlena is moving away today!” A third person cheered quietly. “Did you hear that Chloe is planning on...to Marlena?” The second stated. Marlena tried to fill in the blank in her head because the teacher was very loud Marlena couldn’t hear the middle part. “Oh well.” Marlena didn’t think much of it. After Mrs. Morton finished talking about five digit multiplication and division problems our class lined up and began walking to art class as if they were stiff, wooden soldiers. As we walked, Marlena saw Cara in classroom 217. She wished that Cara would acknowledge her and smile or wave. She continued to walk. Marlena’s eyes spotted the art class door on the left side of the hallway. The door had different kinds of music notes in different bright, vibrant colors. She wished she had been assigned to the front of the line, but sadly the front of the line had been assigned to Jake, who walked as slow as a worm. Once they finally arrived at the art classroom, Mrs. Morton walked in front of the line and knocked on the door. “Yes?” Mr. Dygo opened the door. “Good morning, Mr. Dygo!” Mrs. Morton said. “Good morning. Ah it is my best class!”He announced. One by one the line walked into the room and sat on the rug with the colored squares. He chatted with Mrs. Morton a bit before heading into the classroom. Well let's start with some games. “Yes!” Marlena cheered in her head. It was very rare to see Mr. Dygo let Marlena’s class play games. “Behind you are tables of legos, paper and drawing supplies, computers, and building supplies. You can’t bring legos to other tables, do you understand?” He asked. “Yes, Mr. Dygo!” The whole class answered. “Good. You may go.” He said. Most of the kids went zooming over to the computers, but sadly there were only 4 computers so most of them changed their mind. Marlena looked around and decided to go to building supplies and make something for Cara. She had to hurry because since today was a half day for the school, the art class would be shorter. She picked up the wooden stick and laid ten of them lined up next to each other on the tabletop. Then she picked up the hot glue gun and carefully glued the sticks together. After that, Marlena kept making more of those ten wooden sticks glued together, and put them all up to make a house. Marlena was satisfied with her creation and was ready to give it to Cara. On her way home, she encountered Chloe, Shara, and Alica standing in front of her. Marlena tried to go around them, but Alica and Shara blocked her. “You think you have the guts to try to ignore us?!?”Chloe screamed at Marlena. Marlena flynched. Chloe’s eyes looked at the wooden house Marlena held in her hand. Marlena quickly put the wooden house behind her back. “Alica, get Marlena!” Chloe demanded. Marlena ran as fast as she could back to the school. She spotted Cara and ran to her. “Cara, take this and run to your home!” Marlena said quietly panting. Cara didn’t say a word and just started running away. Alica finally caught up to Marlena and held her arms tightly. “Ow!” Marlena complained. Alica pulled Marlena back to Chloe. “Shara, hold Marlena’s other arm.” Chloe said calmer than before. Marlena struggled to get out of Alica and Shara’s grasp, but it was too tight. “Hi, can you help me, sir?” Marlena turned behind her and asked. Alica and Shara took a glance and Marlena took that chance to run, but Alica, who was really smart, grabbed her arm and Shara did the same. Marlena didn’t have any other plans that would help her run away. Chloe froze and stared at Alica and Shara. Before Alica or Shara could look behind them, they fell to the ground unconscious. There was Cara holding a baseball bat that looked like it was from the school. Chloe whimpered like a dog and ran away. Cara hugged Marlena. “Marlena, are you ok?” Cara worried. “Yes, thanks to you!” Marlena cried. Cara walked Marlena to her home where the moving truck waited for them. “Time to go, kiddo!” Marlena’s mom said to her. “Goodbye, Cara.”Marlena cried even harder. “You better call me after that drive!” Cara joked around. She waved and the car drove away. Marlena knew that friendship shouldn’t end if it was true friendship.
