Fiction Fantasy Teens & Young Adult

The last bit of sunlight shone on Luna's pale-ish skin through her bedroom window as the sun sank painfully slow behind the tall forest trees , signalling the end of yet another summer day.

Luna sat on her soft , queen-sized bed reading a book and occasionally glancing through the window. She turned another page and swept her hair away from her face , her grey eyes sparkling and her cupid's bow lips turned up in a bright smile as she read each word.

Her room was so silent that only the turning of the book pages and her even breaths could be heard. Everything in her bedroom was blue - all shades of blue - from the walls and furniture to the bed coverings and ornaments. Everything was neat and orderly.

“Guess what , sis!” said Nigel as he materialized in Luna's bedroom. His green eyes scanned the room before landing on her , a huge smile on his face. Luna's eyes narrowed when he jumped onto her bed.

“You're here to annoy me again?” Luna answered , plastering a fake grin on her face.

“Well...maybe. But I come with news!” he exclaimed dramatically.

“Well , spill it , then! I wanna go back to reading my book!” Luna said rolling her eyes.

“Bookworm.” mumbled Nigel.

“What did you just ca-”

“Anyway!” Nigel cut in , holding back a laugh , “We're going back to Asteria soon.”

“Really?” Luna asked. Nigel nodded and she jumped at him , hugging him tightly and squealing excitedly.

“Um...Sis?” Nigel said , slightly panicked , after a while.

“What?” Luna pulled away.

Her bed fell to the floor with a this along with other objects that were floating in her spacious room.

“Yikes.” they said in unison.

“Need to get that under control.” Luna said , sighing deeply.

“Yep!”

“What if I hurt someone else , Ni?”

“Hey , don't worry about that. You won't. And Mike and I will always be here for you... No matter what.” Nigel comforted her , a hand on her shoulder.

“Thanks.” Luna said , wiping an escape tear.

“No problem. It's what big brothers are for.” Nigel said , ruffling Luna's white hair. “Now let's go feed. You look starved.”

They stood at the centre of Luna's room holding hands , their eyes shut tightly in concentration.

Lanuae magical me tempus eat , tora einai i ora gia mena.” they whispered before materializing.

They popped up in the forest a minute later. They spotted Michael in the distance and jogged towards him.

“Took you guys long enough.” he said turning to them , his face serious.

“Sorry.” Luna mumbled.

“Let the hunt begin!” Nigel shouted rather childishly and ran off at super speed. Luna and Michael shrugged and followed him.

The hunt for prey began.

#

“Feel better?” asked Nigel.

“Much.” answered Luna , wiping blood from her lips. They stood in the middle of the forest surrounded by tall trees. It was getting dark.

“You shouldn't starve yourself , Lu. It's not good for anyone.” Michael said , sternly.

“Not good for anyone? What's that supposed to mean , Michael?” Luna spun around to face him , her eyes narrowed.

“You know what could happen if you starve yourself , Lu , especially for too long. You could-”

“Lose control? Hurt someone? Like i did last time? I know, I'm dangerous.” Luna cut in.

“I didn't mean it like that.” Michael said , a pained expression on his face.

“So what did you mean?” Luna asked. She waited for an answer and when he gave none , she chanted a spell and suddenly disappeared.

“Now look what you've done.” Nigel said , shaking his head.

“Shut up.” Michael said to his identical twin brother , “Let's go find her.”

They searched for hours and couldn't find Luna anywhere. They couldn't even catch her scent.

“She's becoming better than us at hide and seek.” Michael said , pinching the bridge of his nose , his eyes closed and forehead creased.

“I know right.” Nigel commented , “Let's go back home and check the gym. You made her upset. She'll most likely wanna take her anger out on something.”

“Why couldn't you think of that earlier?” Nigel asked , huffing.

“Hey , you're the brains here. Also , I thought we should give her some time alone...”

“And you didn't think about sharing this thought of yours with me earlier? Instead of us having to search hours upon hours for her!” Michael yelled in frustration.

“Dude , calm down. I'm sorry , okay?” Nigel apologized.

“You're-” Michael stopped and took a few deep breaths , “I'm sorry. I'm just tired.”

“Yeah. Now let's go look for her.”

They soon disappeared from the edge of the forest in a flash.

“Luna... I'm really , really sorry. Please come out and stop destroying those punching bags and not leaving any for us.” Michael pleaded from outside the gym.

“Leave me alone , Mike.” Luna replied from inside the gym, her voice hoarse.

“She called me Mike. She's not angry anymore. Yay!” Michael whispered to Nigel , smiling a little.

“Yeah , she's not angry anymore. Now she's crying her eyes out.” Nigel rolled his eyes at Michael.

“Oh. Yeah. Crap.” Michael replied , his face crestfallen.

He ran his fingers through his curly , black hair , deep in thought. A grin spread across his face as he looked up at Nigel.

“I got an idea.” Michael said.

“Oh....kay?”

“Yeah. Be right back.” Michael said as he does off down the hall.

Minutes later , be was back , his arms filled with different snacks.

“I brought all her favourite foods: pizza , chocolate chip cookies , snickers , Hershey's and a bunch of other foods , and some chocolate milkshake.” Michael whispered-shouted to Nigel.

“Hmm , maybe she won't be sad after this...” Nigel said , crossing his arms across his chest.

“Yeah , maybe...” Michael said quickly , “LUNA!”

“Dude! You didn't have to shout. She might kill us for-”

“What!” Luna yelled , flinging open the door , her eyes flaming red.

“Umm...we brought you food as a...peace offering?” Michael said , looking anywhere but in Luna's eyes.

“So , you think just because you brought me all my favourite foods , I'll forgive you?” asked Luna , her eyes returning to its slate grey colour.

“We kinda did...” Nigel trailed off.

“Well , in that case , you're right! I will forgive you!” Luna shouted at them with a grin.

“You mean it?” asked Michael.

“Of course. I'll get my revenge later on , anyway.”

“Oh , damn...”

“Yup! Can I have my food now?”

“Yeah , sure.” Michael answered.

Luna picked out all the foods with chocolate , leaving Michael almost empty-handed.

“You can handle all that , sis?” asked Nigel.

“Duh.” Luna said , sticking her tongue out at them. “Bye now!”

“Wait , wha-” Michael was saying before the door slammed in his and Nigel's faces.

“I did nothing wrong , and the door gets slammed in my face.” Nigel said , hiding a smile.

“Shut up.” Michael said playfully , throwing his arm around his brother's neck and guiding him down the hall.

“Luna! Michael! Nigel! Get down here!” a female voice yelled from the bottom of the stairway that led up to the bedrooms. Within seconds , the three appeared in front of their aunt.

“Yes , aunt?” asked Luna , innocently.

“Who did it?” their aunt asked , her hands on her waist and her black eyes looking at each of them sternly.

“Did what , Aunt Mina?” Michael asked.

She stretched her small hands out , aiming at the window by the stairs. A gust of wind blew the curtains , revealing something that shouldn't be outside.

“Snow!” Nigel exclaimed , grinning mischievously , side-eyeing Michael.

“Exactly.” Aunt Mina said.

“But it's the middle of summer. Why's it snowing?” Michael asked.

“That's what i want you to tell me.”

“Why do you think we did it?”

“You three are mischievous enough to do something like this. You're masterminds.”

“Thank you very much for the compliment , Aunt. But I obviously didn't do it. I hate snow.”

“Correction: you're afraid of snow.” Nigel said , laughing , earning a glare from Michael.

“Nigel is too dumb to cast that kind of spell.” Michael smirked.

Everyone looked at Luna.

“Geez , no need to stare. I confess... I did it.” Luna answered , rolling her eyes.

“Why?” Aunt Mina asked.

“Michael's scared of snow. I told him I'd get my revenge.” Luna answered.

“Oh , no...” Michael said , frowning.

“Oh , yes.” Luna said , smiling sweetly.

“Well , you guys go ahead and take revenge or whatever. I'm going back to bed.” Nigel yawned , walking away.

“No you're not. You're staying here with me until Lu gets her revenge. She's scarier than snow.” Michael said , pulling Nigel back by his shirt collar.

“I guess you'll learn to never get a female vampire-witch hybrid upset again.” their aunt said , laughing. “ Good luck, kids.”

They watched as she walked away , heading to the kitchen.

“You're fifteen. I'm a year older than you. I demand that you stop this revenge thing you're doing.” Michael said.

“Shush.” Luna told him.

“I'll do whatever you want. Just don't do whatever you're planning... please.”

“No. You're gonna face your fear today.”

“ Why are you so cruel to me?”

“Why are you so scared of snow?” Luna smiled.

She flicked her wrist in Michael's direction and whispered something , making him vanish.

“LUNA!” he yelled from outside.

Both Luna and Nigel rushed to the window , laughing , and waved at him. Michael huffed and lay back in the snow , his hands over his face.

“I'll get you back for this.” Michael mumbled.

Hi, I'm Kerri from your critique circle. I enjoyed reading your story. Good imagery. The pacing was good in the beginning, but I think it needed to slow down towards the end. Also, I would liked to have learned the reason why Michael was a fraid of snow. Maybe include a little snippit in the dialogue or narrative--I get we have to be careful with word count--it doesn't even need to be that detailed, maybe like Nigel teasing him about the "cause" or something. Overall, entertaining good story.
