“The Great Cat Caper” By Edward J. McCoul

Ring, ring…

Grandma: Hello?

Timmy: Hi, Grandma! It’s Timmy. I need your help!

Grandma: Oh, Timmy! What’s the matter? Did you lose your homework again?

Timmy: No, it’s worse! Mr. Whiskers is stuck on the roof!

Grandma: Mr. Whiskers? Your cat? How did he get up there?

Timmy: Well, you see, I was trying to teach him how to fly…

Grandma: Timmy, cats don’t fly. They have nine lives, but none of them involve flying!

Timmy: I know, I know. But I thought if I tied some balloons to him, he might float a little.

Grandma: Balloons? Oh dear. How many balloons did you use?

Timmy: Just a few… okay, maybe twenty.

Grandma: Twenty?! No wonder he’s on the roof! Did you at least use helium?

Timmy: Of course! I’m not a complete amateur.

Grandma: Alright, Timmy. Stay calm. I’ll call the fire department.

Timmy: No, wait! There’s more. The balloons popped, and now he’s stuck in the chimney.

Grandma: The chimney? How did he get from the roof to the chimney?

Timmy: Well, I tried to lure him down with a can of tuna, but he slipped and fell in.

Grandma: Timmy, this is turning into quite the adventure. Are you sure you didn’t plan this?

Timmy: No, Grandma, it was an accident! Can you come over and help?

Grandma: Alright, I’ll be there in a jiffy. But next time, let’s stick to teaching Mr. Whiskers how to fetch, okay?

Timmy: Deal. Thanks, Grandma!

Grandma: You’re welcome, Timmy. And remember, no more flying lessons for Mr. Whiskers!

Click.

Timmy: (to himself) Maybe I should try teaching him to skateboard next…

Ring, ring…

Grandma: Hello?

Timmy: Uh, Grandma? About that skateboard idea…

Grandma: Timmy, no!

Click.

Ring, ring…

Grandma: Hello?

Timmy: Hi, Grandma! It’s Timmy again.

Grandma: Timmy, what now? Did Mr. Whiskers try to skateboard?

Timmy: No, no. But you’ll never believe what happened. The fire department came and got him out of the chimney.

Grandma: Oh, good! Is he alright?

Timmy: Yeah, he’s fine. But now he’s covered in soot and looks like a little black cat.

Grandma: Well, at least he’s safe. Did you give him a bath?

Timmy: I tried, but he ran away and now he’s hiding under the couch.

Grandma: Oh dear. Cats and water don’t mix well. Maybe you should let him calm down first.

Timmy: Good idea. But there’s one more thing…

Grandma: What now, Timmy?

Timmy: While I was trying to catch him, I accidentally knocked over the fish tank.

Grandma: Oh no! Are the fish okay?

Timmy: Yeah, they’re fine. I put them in a bowl for now. But the living room is soaked!

Grandma: Timmy, you certainly know how to keep things interesting. I’ll be over soon to help clean up.

Timmy: Thanks, Grandma. And don’t worry, no more crazy ideas for Mr. Whiskers. I promise!

Grandma: Let’s hope so, Timmy. See you soon!

Click.

Timmy: (to himself) Maybe I should just stick to playing video games…

Ring, ring…

Grandma: Hello?

Timmy: Uh, Grandma? About those video games…

Grandma: Timmy, no!

Click.

Ring, ring…

Grandma: Hello?

Timmy: Hi, Grandma. It’s Timmy again. I have another problem.

Grandma: Timmy, what now?

Timmy: Well, I was trying to clean up the living room, and I accidentally knocked over the vase with the flowers you gave me.

Grandma: Oh dear. Did it break?

Timmy: Yes, and now there’s water and flowers everywhere. And Mr. Whiskers is playing with the broken pieces.

Grandma: Timmy, you need to be more careful. I’ll be over soon to help you clean up. And make sure Mr. Whiskers doesn’t hurt himself with the broken pieces.

Timmy: I will, Grandma. Thanks again.

Grandma: You’re welcome, Timmy. See you soon.

Click.

Timmy: (to himself) Maybe I should just sit quietly and wait for Grandma…

Ring, ring…

Grandma: Hello?

Timmy: Hi, Grandma. It’s Timmy again. You won’t believe what just happened!

Grandma: Timmy, what now?

Timmy: Well, while I was waiting for you, I heard a strange noise coming from the attic.

Grandma: The attic? What kind of noise?

Timmy: It sounded like… meowing. So, I went to check it out, and you won’t believe what I found!

Grandma: What did you find, Timmy?

Timmy: Another cat! A kitten, actually. It looks just like Mr. Whiskers, but smaller and fluffier.

Grandma: A kitten? How did it get in the attic?

Timmy: I have no idea! But it’s so cute, Grandma. Can we keep it?

Grandma: Well, Timmy, we’ll have to find out where it came from first. It might belong to someone.

Timmy: Okay, Grandma. But if no one claims it, can we keep it? Please?

Grandma: We’ll see, Timmy. First, let’s take care of Mr. Whiskers and clean up the mess. Then we can figure out what to do with the kitten.

Timmy: Thanks, Grandma! You’re the best!

Grandma: You’re welcome, Timmy. See you soon.

Click.

Timmy: (to himself) This is turning out to be the best day ever!

Later that day…

Grandma: Alright, Timmy. The living room is clean, and Mr. Whiskers is finally calm. Now, let’s see about this kitten.

Timmy: Here it is, Grandma! Isn’t it adorable?

Grandma: It certainly is. But let’s see how Mr. Whiskers reacts.

Timmy: Mr. Whiskers, meet your new friend!

Mr. Whiskers: (sniffs the kitten cautiously)

Kitten: (meows softly)

Mr. Whiskers: (hisses and arches his back)

Timmy: Oh no, Grandma! Mr. Whiskers doesn’t like the kitten!

Grandma: Give him some time, Timmy. He’s just not used to having another cat around. Let’s keep them separated for now and introduce them slowly.

Timmy: Okay, Grandma. I hope they become friends soon.

Grandma: They will, Timmy. It just takes a little patience.

Over the next few days, Timmy and Grandma gradually introduced Mr. Whiskers to the kitten. At first, Mr. Whiskers was wary and kept his distance. But as time went on, he began to warm up to the little furball. Eventually, they started playing together and even napping side by side.

Timmy: Look, Grandma! They’re getting along!

Grandma: See, Timmy? I told you they just needed some time.

Timmy: This is the best day ever! Thanks, Grandma!

Grandma: You’re welcome, Timmy. Now, let’s make sure we don’t have any more adventures like this for a while, okay?

Timmy: Deal. But I was thinking… maybe we could teach them both to skateboard?

Grandma: Timmy, no!
