A Volleyball Mistake

"Linea, wait up!" she shrieked, as she emphasized my name.

"What's up?" I asked her.

"Well, you know that I go to a volleyball camp, right?"

"Yes,"

"One of the players in my team broke an ankle and their wrist, and we need a replacement member. So, when my coach asked if any of us knew a person who would be interested, I kind of raised my hand," she explained.

"I'm sorry for the player, but why are you even telling me this? This summer my entire family is going on a road trip to Florida. I'm going to visit my grandparents and my cousins." I told her. 

I noted her expression. She frowned and sighed as she started to walk back.

"Hey, Gennie, what is it?" I asked her.

"Oh...nothing. I see that your busy, I guess we won't have another team member to play for my team." she frowned a little bit more.

I tried to reassure her as a put my hand on her shoulder. I whispered in her ear, "It's going to be ok, G." 

"I'm sorry, I should have told you this way–way earlier, and I don't know why I never told you. I was just so scared of what you would think," she admitted, and honestly, I was very confused.

"What even are you talking about?" I questioned her. I shot her a suspicious look.

"Well, when I raised my hand, I accidentally said...your name. I mean, I thought you could go to the camp as a replacement volleyball player. But, I didn't know you had other plans this summer. I'm sorry." Linea told me, and I was stunned.

I didn't know how to react.

"WHAT?! You know I don't like sports! I can't be an athlete! You know how terrible I am in soccer, baseball, basketball, football, kickball...and just every sport in the world! I can't even play Badminton without throwing the racket out of bounds! Remember the last time we played it? The birdie flew on me! I don't know what you were thinking Gennie!" I shook my head in disapproval, as I continued walking away from her. 

I can't believe she would do this. Me playing volleyball? I think she purposely did this to humiliate me...I kept thinking.

"No! Don't walk away L! Please, just consider this option. I know that you may think you are terrible at sports and all of that, but volleyball is pretty fun—and easy! Trust me! Also, taking up a new hobby can be also really amazing. Don't you wanna have a new experience? Besides, you've never been to any summer camp before. I can convince your parents." Gennie tried her best to convince me, and now that I think about it, playing volleyball did sound really fun, but still...I didn't know if her plan would work at all. 

Convincing my parents is like talking to a rock. Didn't get the simile? Well, when you talk to a rock, you know that it isn't going to talk back, and you're just basically wasting your time. Same with my parents. No matter what you say to them, they're entitled to their original plan and whoever would be trying to convince will be considered as a fool, wasting their time. 

In this case, the fool is Gennie. I wish she would just understand that talking to my parents to change their minds is just wasting her time. 

"Gennie, I really don't think this is going to work. Just listen to me. I know my parents more than you do. Trust me, pick someone else." I tried to advise her that this plan was a terrible idea.

But I guess Gennie is exactly like my parents. She won't back down. 

Oh no, she won't.

In fact, she was marching up to my house, and before I could run after her and tell her that this is such a terrible plan, she did the worst thing she could ever do to me.

She knocked on the door.

Now I was going to get into so much trouble. All because of my best friend.

"GENNIE!! NO!" I yelled, but it was way too late.

My mom opened the door, and she asked Gennie, "Hi honey! What are you doing here? Looking for Linea? I thought she was with you."

I came there and tried to fix the awkward conversation.

"Oh! H-hi mom! Gennie over here came to just...umm, she wanted some lemonade! Y-yeah, that's totally why she came here, right Gennie?" I was kicking her feet to just go with my plan, but that wasn't how it worked out.

"I don't know what Linea is saying, but I came here to talk to you about a mistake I did." my mom let her in and shut the door in my face for some reason. 

I didn't mind. 

I already knew I was going to be grounded.

I pressed my ear against the door to try and listen to their conversation. I didn't hear any screaming, shouting, or anything like that, so I knew mom wasn't that mad. 

I could hear mom replying something to Gennie. It sounded like she agreed to her plan. I couldn't believe it.

Then I heard Gennie's voice saying, "Thank you so much, Mrs. Lorrie, I will surely tell Linea all about this. Thank you, again, for agreeing to this. I am so excited for her to come to camp with me. We are going to have so much fun together."

I almost felt light as a feather and as dizzy as a...as dizzy as I just spun around for a couple of hundred times. 

I heard the door moving, so I stepped back, pretending like I didn't hear anything at all.

"L, it worked! You're going to come to camp with me!! We're going to have so much fun playing volleyball! I'll teach you all the rules, and everything there is to it!" she exclaimed, but I wasn't listening to her. 

I was chuckling by myself, reading to rock this summer.
