Coming of Age Adventure Friendship

It was not a usual Sunday and David could feel it. He had grown accustomed to sensing danger before it hit from a very young age that is what living with his family, had taught him, not that they taught him much at least not anything a young boy his age should know. he had to figure out everything on his own including incidents to avoid. This was one he for some reason could not walk away.

"You keep your voice down David can hear you," said Nancy his mother.

"So what if he hears us? He is not a little boy anymore we can't hide our issues from him anymore." Tony said

"Is that why you want to make it clear his birth broke us? Her mother asked.

He couldn't believe what he was he was hearing but he knew he didn't want to listen to the conversation anymore so he went up to his room. All he knew was he could not stay in that house anymore, it was suffocating him. He packed up all he had which was not much; five pairs of jeans, three shirts, two shorts three tea-shirts, a pair of sneakers and two official shoes he used for school, not much compared to his brother, Andrew who had everything he ever wanted. The only thing he ever asked for and got was his guitar thanks to his grandmother, who insisted.

Thinking of his grandmother brought tears to his eyes he picked up his guitar and put it in his suitcase. He then went on to the floorboard removed one of the cardboard and took out the box his grandmother left him. He carefully replaced the cardboard. It had been a request from his grandmother, Anne to hide the box until he was ready to open it. Just as he was about to open the box there was a knock at the door, he quickly put the box in his suitcase locked it and put it under his bed but he was too late by the moment Andrew walked in he had already seen it and that his usual abuse began.

" What are you doing you, sissy? Planning to run away. Who will be my punching bag now?" Andrew asked

Just as he was about to punch him he moved out of the way and his brother fell to the bed but due to its poor condition and his brother's weight it broke and his brother hit the floor. Just as he was about to punch him, their parents run to the room already blaming him and coming up with ways to punish him. Not this time they always preferred Andrew to him he knew it no one had to tell him.

He picked up his suitcase while his brother was still licking his wounds plotting a way to get back at him, walked out of the room and out of the house not to ever return. Not that anyone tried to stop him but they were more worried about their golden child. He never understood why his parents favoured him more he was a trouble maker, he failed at school and was a fully grown eighteen years old as opposed to him who was barely eleven.

His parents only noticed the car peel off the street when he charged his ride to his parent's credit he had used to call the taxi. He had no idea where he was headed but know that he was away from the house he opened his grandmother's box for the first time. There were a lot of letters and a few documents including a ticket for a cruise at whatever time so long as she shows up at the dock with the ticket. So he asked the taxi driver to take him to the dock which he did without asking any additional money.

once he arrived at the dock he saw the ship his grandmother had explained in the letter and the man he was talking about. He made sure he had his suitcase at all times as the ship sailed through he kept on reading his grandmothers letters and apparently Anne was quite adventurous. The more letters he read the more he learnt about her the more he felt connected to her. Most importantly the more he felt he had left his drama-filled life behind.

Returning her grandmothers box to the suitcase and hiding it well before he let himself, enjoy the breeze of the sea. They had been travelling for quite a while after he got on board. He felt his eyes grow heavy and allowed himself, to doze off.

There several scenarios that David has wakened up to from, his bed wet because his brother thought pouring a bucket of water on him while he slept was funny. There are a lot of worse scenarios but he will not think about that here was a stranger soothing him because he had a nightmare not many cared but his chaotic life caused him a lot of anxiety leading to nightmares. Once he was calm enough, he started asking questions, why he sailed so much? how he knew his grandmother? and what his life, like if he was not sailing? As he answered the question he felt safer around him. Someone else was sailing so he was so he did something he rarely does he played his guitar for him. They stopped by a few places and as the journey continued David found out a lot more about Anne. He realised that the wealth his father, always complained was to be his was now his own he carefully slid the documents into his underpants pocket just for safety.

The cruise went for an entire month them stopping at various places to buy foods and stuff before continuing with the journey. He was just grateful his grandmother left him some money he needs new clothes not the hand me downs from his brother. The last request from his grandmother was he visit a cabin so he asked Arnold, the new friend he made if it is ok and he said it would not be a problem since there is where he stayed. That felt a bit wired but as he read the last of his grandmother's letter he realised the reason for the coincidence. So excited, he knew Arnold was not sailing he went in search for him only to find his unconscious body on the floor.

Everything else was a blur somehow, he made it to the cabin with everything he had and organising his grandfathers funeral. He had only wanted to escape his family's drama he never imagined he would meet his grandfather, cruise around for an entire month, meet the world so to speak, and make a great friendship.
