Science Fiction

"Hurry up! We'll miss the Grand Opening," Sally yelled, pedaling faster. "I'm coming!" I hollered back, keeping the same pace as my hair flew in my eyes.

Today was the grand opening of a new engineering store, called "Broken Glass". You could bring anything that was broken, and the workers would fix it. You could also buy tools to build your own thing. And if it's something new, you can turn it in and the owner will judge it. If it's interesting enough, you can gain a job there.

As Sally skirted her bike to a stop, I finally made it. "Comon' Jay! We're gonna miss it," She nagged, dragging me by the arm. "Yea, yea," I grumbled. As I looked at her I could see the sparkle in her hazel eyes, "I just want-"

"You want your dad to win the contest this month so he can work there and then maybe you can get your dream job there," I interrupted.

"How did you know?" She asked in awe.

"Because Sal, you have been talking about this for two months."

"Actually 6 weeks, so that's only a month and a half."

"You've been counting!?" I mocked, walking towards the big crowd. Sally came running after me, 'Hey wait up!" As she finally caught up we reached the food trucks. I took a deep breath. "Mmmm, I smell doughnuts.." Sally laughed, "You know, Jay, you have the smell of a dog. I can't smell anything!" I also chuckled, "If I smell something I like, then I can always smell it."

"Let's hurry up and get tickets, shall we?" Sally pleaded, holding out her hand. My laugh got louder, "We shall~"

We grabbed our tickets and headed to the seats numbered 5 and 6. "I'm so excited," Sally whispered in my ear. "Me too," I replied, half lying.

The red curtains opened as a tall man with sleek black hair, and a tux walked out. "Pretty typical," I said, chuckling a bit. "Yea, it's like every cool person is typical to you, now shush!" Sally hushed as the man started talking.

"Ladies, gentlemen, and everyone else, I am your host, Mr. Glass," The man announced in a sharp accent that didn't seem recognizable, even to me. Everybody clapped, but I stayed silent.

"As we start our new grand opening of the shop," Mr. Glass started, "I would like to choose one person in this room to have a gift." He paused for dramatic effect, "The Taro." The screen behind him glowed with a white light as a picture of a small robotic human appeared.

"This is the Taro. A small assistant that will do whatever you please. It can carry ten times its weight. As you it learns your personality, it also gains its own. Now..." He paused again, "Who wants a Taro!" Everyone squealed, and screamed, but I sat there and stayed quiet. "Now I shall pick a number from one to a thousand, and whichever number I pick, the person in that chair shall have this Taro for free!" The crowd went crazy again.

The screen glowed once again as it switched through different numbers, like a slot machine. It then slowed down to a stop, and the number read: 6. "Oh my god," Sally whispered, "Jay that's you! Go up and get it!" I sighed and got up onto the metal stage. As I got closer to Mr. Glass, his face got more ugly. His wrinkles moving and the dark shadows under his eyes darkening.

"Hi," I grumbled. "Hello!" Mr. Glass said in an enthusiastic voice, "And what's your name, little girl?" I sighed and grabbed the mic. "Hi, my name is Jayanna but call me Jay. I'm 16 years old so I'm not little," I shoved the mic back to Mr. Glass and started to walk away. "Hold on miss," He said, grabbing onto my shoulder. "You forgot this," He handed me a small robotic person that had long silver hair and pale skin. It blinked and opened its pastel-yellow eyes, "Hello! My name is-" It paused. "Choose a name," Mr. Glass whispered. "Selene. Your name is Selene, after the goddess of the moon," I said to the small android. "Selene,' it finished, "And I shall provide you with anything you please. And that I shall provide!" When it finished speaking, it smiled softly. I smiled back, "Hi, my name is Jay." The android fell asleep in the palm of my hand.

As I started to walk back to my seat, I heard a small click as Mr. Glass leaned over me. "Make sure she blends in with the other humans- I mean... others." I studied his face for a moment and gasped. His skin seemed clear and I could see the robotic parts. "I don't want anyone to know what they can do," He paused and cleared his voice, "I want to... keep it as a surprise..." I nodded and walked quickly back to my seat."

"What did he tell you after he turned off the mic?" Sally asked. I sighed and looked at her, "Just... Just to keep it safe," I reassured. She smiled and went back to listening to Mr. Glass.

After all that was over, me and Sally headed back to our bikes. "Well... That was fun!" Sally observed. "It was... Interesting. Now, let's head home." We both got onto our bikes and rode home.

As I walked inside my room, Selene started making some weird squeaking sounds. "Selene are you ok?" I asked worriedly. "Yes! Just happy to be at home. May I grow to full size?" I got taken aback. "Full... full size?" I stuttered. "Yes. This is my pocket-size mode. Please say, 'full size' for me to become my full size." I looked back and forth around my room. "F-full size?" The small android nodded as it grew larger. Its legs growing longer and its body growing bigger. As it slowed down, I realized that she kinda looked like me. "Wow." I gasped. "Orders from Glass state that I shall try to stay human in case of kidnappers," it stated. "Yea... He told me you had to blend in with the others... Are there more of you?" I questioned.

"There have been many tests on us androids to be perfect for replacing all humans and des-" It paused. "Sorry, those words are restricted." I sighed, "Well I'm gonna head for bed, how do you sleep?" Selene opened her hand to show solar panels. "I charge during the day to have enough energy during the night and during cloudy days." I yawned, "Well we have school tomorrow so I got to rest. Goodnight, Selene."

  "Goodnight, Jay."

I woke up and looked over to see Selene doing my laundry. "Morning..." I grumbled. "Good morning Jay, I have your clothes and breakfast ready for the day!" I smiled. "Thank you, Selene." I got dressed and walked to my desk and ate some toast. "This is really good. Now we gotta go to school.." I said, packing my school backpack. "Do I need anything?" Selene questioned. "Ummm sure just grab my other bag and follow me I guess." I always saw this stuff in shows and movies but will it really work this time? I mean she's not in the attendance or in the school so what am I gonna do? I could write a fake note saying she translates for me- no I speak perfect english, I practiced for years. Maybe saying I need help reading my work? Perfect. I always had trouble with that.

As we reached the school I looked over at Selene, "Act.. like a human ok? And don't talk to anyone just stay with me," I ordered. Selene nodded, "That I shall do."

I walked over to my locker and opened it. As I grabbed my book a guy walked over.

"Hey JJ~" He purred. "Hey baby-" I said, closing the locker door. "What's up with the chick?" He asked, chuckling. "Thats... That's a student from korea that's helping me read," I stuttered. "Oh.. she single?" I pushed him giggling, "Hey I'm right here!"

Selene tilted her head. "Is that your boyfriend in which you have pictures of on the wall?" I glared at her, "I told you to be quiet," I growled. "I gotta head to glass goodbye~" I walked into class and sat down.

As the teacher droned on and on about history, Selene raised her hand. "Yes?" The teacher asked. "Jay here needs help reading, may I help?" I grumbled and put my hands in my face. "Umm sure that's fine," The teacher said, continuing about the lesson.

After class I had an idea. "Hey, Selene! We should skip!" Selene tilted her head. "Isn't that bad?" She questioned. "Well only if you get caught!" I laughed and ran towards my bike, "Comon lets get you some clothes at Broken Glass." Selene nodded and got onto the bike. I rode towards the shop. "Ok lets see-" I got interrupted by someone grabbing my shoulder. "Miss please come with me." I shrugged and walked into the green door ahead of me. I opened it slowly and stared into the room.

I screamed at what I saw in front of me.

This is the end of my story. I LOVE cliffhangers so here's one for you! I hope you enjoy this. :)

I think you wrote a very creative story. You wrote very well. I can see this story being applicable for young adults, teens and even middle schoolers if you lowered the age of the main character and her friend. For middle schoolers you would possibly need someway to explain what an android is to them. I loved when Selene went from pocket size to full size. I wonder if she could shrink back down so Jay's parents wouldn't find out about her? You had one typo (we all do). You typed head to "glass" instead of head to "class." Keep writing. I enj...
