Coming of Age People of Color Happy

Debbie always had a habit of picking up hobbies. From gardening to baking, the list ranged on and on. She was like a magnet for hobbies, once she set her eyes on something she thought would be fun, she went for it. But there was just one little problem, Debbie never stuck to a hobby. Her hobby attention span, or as he liked to call it, her 'hobby span' was very non existent, and people were starting to complain.

Debbie was raised in a typical Nigerian family, meaning one thing; strict parents. But Debbie was not deterred by her parents iron fists, rather she thought of it like a challenge; find the best way to piss daddy and mommy off.

Her parents were sick and tired of Debbie wasting money and time on things she would never complete, so they decided to cut off her source of income; her allowance.

You could imagine how this ended up.. TERRIBLY. But what could Jordan do? It's not like she could walk up to her parents and demand her allowance back, that would be like asking for world war II.

Weeks past by like a blur, but Debbie still felt like there was something missing, that spark in her, she felt like her life was meaningless at the time, and one thought kept ringing at the back of her mind

"An idle mind is the devil's workshop."

Holidays would soon be over and she would have to resume school.. hobby less. The thought broke her heart. Later that evening, she came up with a plan, she promised herself to try out one more hobby, and if that didn't work, then she would succumb to a life void of activities to do.. but one thing was in her way, what hobby would she pick out next?

She decided to go round her estate asking people what their hobbies were, maybe that would help her in her quest for a hobby.

The first person she decided to ask was her neighbor, Mrs Vivian. Although she hated to admit it, she was a little bit scared of Mrs Vivian.

Mrs Vivian was a tall, cranky middle aged Yoruba woman who NEVER smiled, Debbie and her friends often addressed the lady as 'grinch' because of how angry she always seemed.

Debbie decided to take the bold step of knocking on Mrs Vivian's door. It took three attempts before the door was finally opened.

Standing in front of her was a very cranky Mrs Vivian who looked like she had woken up on the wrong side of the bed. Debbie plastered on a smile as she asked Mrs Vivian what her hobby was, a part of her expecting no response at all.

She was beyond shocked when Mrs Vivian began to smile and welcomed her in.

Debbie was mesmerized by the beautiful array of clothes adorning Mrs Vivian's sitting room. Different ankara outfits were arranged in hangers, and there was a white sewing machine in the middle of the room.

Mrs Vivian began to tell her about her love for sewing, and how she turned her hobby into a source of income. Debbie was mesmerized at the amount of love Mrs Vivian showed for her hobby, and this made Debbie secretly take back every mean thing she said about Mrs Vivian.

After spending close to an hour there, she left, promising to come back later in the week.

Her next target was her mother's driver, Mr Ikenna.

Mr Ikenna was a very friendly young Igbo man, probably in his mid twenties. He always had a smile on his face no matter what, and he was easily identified by the silly cap he was so fond of wearing.

Debbie greeted him and began with her question.

He smiled as he told her about his love for farming. He told her about how farming helped him provide for his family, and send his children to school. This warmed her heart even more, she even began to tear up a bit.

She spent some time talking about his family with him, before leaving to find her next and probably final target, her best friend Joy.

Joy lived a few blocks away, so walking that long distance plus the Nigerian heat made Debbie exhausted.

When she finally got to Joy's house, the first thing she did was to lay down on Joy's bed, collapsing like a loaf of bread.

After a few minutes and three or four (maybe five) glasses of fanta, Debbie began to interrogate Joy.

Joy's answer didn't really surprise Debbie, but it was still fun to listen to either way. Joy said her hobbies ranged from watching horror movies, to talking about horror movies, to researching about horror movies, and when she was not doing that, she would be found shoving food down her vacuum for a stomach, and apart from that, she was a typical couch potato. Joy was the adventurous type alright, but her laziness always made her rethink doing crazy things, and if not for Debbie's arrival, Joy would have probably watched a horror movie while eating on the couch, lazily.

Debbie spent a few hours with Joy, and at the end of the day, she understood why Joy was such a lazy bone.

When Debbie finally got home, she began to write down whatever came to her, maybe then she would be able to find a hobby, but immediately she started, she was drawn into the world of sleep.

A few more weeks passed by, and Debbie had only two days to resume school, hobby less.

That's when it hit her, her hobby could be finding new hobbies!

She finally found her hobby!

When she told her dad, he let out a hearty laugh, silently wondering if he was that exciting when he was sixteen.

When Debbie finally resumed school, (much to her disappointment) she shared the news to her friends.. sure they didn't really understand why she was so happy, but they still showered her with hugs anyway!
