Fantasy Funny Teens & Young Adult

Um, hello, I'm Dawn. I live with my twin sister, Kela and our older brother, Angel. However, they've been acting rather strangely as of late. Anyways, here's how I found out about something, amazing.

Angel knocked on my bedroom door as he said, "Dawn, mom said, it's time for dinner.”

"I'll be right out." I assured in reply as I paused the game I was playing on my computer before getting up and leaving my room.

As soon as I left my room, Angel stared at me as if he was looking for something. "Where's your necklace?" he asked.

I rolled my eyes at him. "Hanging above my nightstand."

"Well go get it and put it on." he insisted as he practically forced me back into my room.

I didn't protest, though. It's hard too when he's like that. So, I did as he instructed. When I returned to my bedroom's doorway, he turned to me and smiled.

"Much better." he said before heading to Kela's room across the hall.

While he was doing that, I headed downstairs to where our mom was.

"Hello, Dawn." she said as she fixed the butterfly clip, keeping her brown hair off her neck. She often wore clips when it was hot out and that day in particular had been one heck of a scorcher.

I sat down as she turned to me with a smile.

"I see Angel made sure you had your necklace on." Mom said as Angel and Kela entered the room.

"I sure did, mom." Angel confirmed as he and Kela sat down.

"Heh, heh. Yeah um, about that." I said, nervously as mom went into the kitchen. "Do either of you know why we wear these things, in the first place?"

Angel and Kela stared at me in shock as if I said something horrible. After a few minutes of that, Kela was the one to sorta answer my question.

"We do, Dawn." she said after taking a deep breath. "I'm surprised, mom hasn't told you."

"Same, actually." Angel agreed. He then turned to Kela, in order to whisper something to her.

I couldn't make out what he whispered, nor could I make out what Kela whispered back to him.

They then turned to me and smiled. We'll tell you, tomorrow." Angel assured.

"Why not, tonight?" I asked in confusion.

Kela shrugged. "Too late in the day.”

Our mom then returned to the table carrying dinner. As she set the food down and began passing it around, she noticed that none of us were talking. "Is everything ok, you three?" she asked.

I glanced at Angel, then Kela before finally turning toward Mom. "I asked them why we wear these necklaces, and they said they'd tell me, tomorrow."

Mom thought for a moment before letting out a deep sigh. "They don't need to," she stated as Angel and Kela began to eat.

I stared at her in disbelief. "How come?" I asked.

"Cause I'm about to." Mom admitted in reply. "Dawn, these necklaces allow us to do something truly special." She took a bite of her food, chewed it and swallowed before continuing. "It allows us to turn into merpeople."

I began laughing much to my family's confusion. I couldn't believe what my mom just said. Us, merpeople? No way. "Mom, you're joking. Right? I mean merpeople aren't real."

Mom's face then took on a serious expression. "I'm not joking, Dawn."

I scoffed. "Yeah, right."

Mom then turned to Kela. "Show her." she said.

Kela smiled and nodded before doing what she was told to do.

I watched Kela, curiously as she grabbed the charm, hanging on the necklace that hung around her neck and closed her eyes. She glowed for a moment before it stopped.

"Uh, that didn't do anything." I commented in confusion. I then shrugged. "Cool light show, though."

"Look under the table." Kela teased as she had a sly smile on her face.

Still not believing any of my family's nonsense, I shrugged my shoulders before leaning over and looking under the table at Kela. And to my surprise, I didn't see her legs. Instead, I saw a long scaly tail. It spanned from her waist and all the way down to the floor.

I sat back up, shocked by what I just saw. "It's true." I said, now believing.

Kela smiled, satisfied before changing back.

Mom turned to Angel. "I want you to teach her how to use her tail." she insisted.

"Yes, mom." Angel replied in between bites of his food.

After that, we all continued our meal before going to bed.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next morning after breakfast, Angel was leading me somewhere I'd never been, before. "Where are you taking me?" I asked, nervously.
He stopped and turned to me. "Relax, sis. I'm taking to a place where we can be our true selves, freely." he explained as he put his hand on my shoulder.
I looked up at him and smiled. "Ok. I trust you."
He seemed to believe me because he went back to leading.
After quite a bit more walking we stopped at a rather beautiful place. It was a deep pool of crisp water, surrounded by mountains. One of which had a waterfall cascading down the side of it.
"Um, Angel." I said in worry as he approached the water.
He turned to me, curiously. "Everything ok?" he asked.
I shook my head. "Someone's gonna see us, here." I insisted.
"Dawn, it's ok." he assured. "If any humans show up, we can just hide in the cave behind the waterfall." He then sat down and changed forms before crawling into the water. "Now, come on."
I stared at him for a moment before slowly approaching. I then sat down on the edge of the pool, my brother watching me all the while. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes before grabbing the charm on my necklace. I gotta admit, changing forms for the first time, felt weird. Like my legs fused together or something. Once I was sure the change was completed, I opened my eyes and looked down at where my legs had been. I smiled as I grabbed the end of my tail.
"Pretty crazy, huh?" Angel said as he lifted the end of his tail out of the water for a moment before allowing it to slap the water as he put it back under.
I nodded in agreement as I let go of my tail. "How do I get in the water?" I asked him, curiously.
"Oh. That's easy." he assured. "All you gotta do is lie flat on your stomach and crawl."
At first I thought he'd lost it. Then again I didn't know what me and my family truly were until last night. So, with a shrug, I turned my body until I was on my stomach, facing the water. With a little more struggle than I care to admit, I crawled into the water.
"Good job, sis." Angel exclaimed as soon as I made it deep enough. "Now slowly flick your tail back and forth."
Again, I struggled to get it. "Ugh, Angel." I exclaimed in frustration. "This is hopeless. I can't do this. I fail as both a human and as a mermaid."
He swam to me with a concerned look on his face. "Dawn, who cares what those bullies at school think of you. You can do anything you put your mind to." He paused for a moment to take a breath. "They may not believe in you, but I do."
I smiled at him as I said, "Thanks, big bro."
He smiled back. "Hmm. You're welcome." He then thought for a moment. "You ready to give it another shot?"
I nodded whilst having a determined look on my face. I then tried to swim again and this time, I succeeded.
"You did it! Dawn, you did it!" he exclaimed proudly as he watched me swim all over the pool.
Suddenly, we heard footsteps approach us. "Dawn, follow me. Quickly." Angel said in panic.
I turned to him and nodded before following him to the cave behind the falls.
While we were behind the falls, we saw two men stop in front of the pool.
"You heard that, right Adam?" a man asked, nervously.
Adam turned to his friend. "Ugh, Ben. It was probably just some fish or something."
"I've heard some strange things in these woods." Ben admitted. "But I'm pretty sure fish can't talk."
"Then it was probably just some people swimming." Adam suggested. "I don't know."
"Yeah, but I don't see anyone except us." Ben stated as he looked around.
While Ben and Adam continued arguing, Angel turned to me and smiled. "I got an idea." he whispered.
I thought about it for a moment before nodding. "What do you have in mind?"
"Just follow my lead." he replied as he began to swim out of the cave, just deep enough so that Ben and Adam couldn't see him.
I followed him, closely. Being careful not to make a ton of noise.
Once we were close enough to Ben and Adam, Angel began moving his tail up and down, just quick enough to create waves in the water.
Realizing his plan, I swam to the other side of the pool and did the same thing.
Ben noticed the water moving. "Uh, Adam. Something's going on."
"Not now, Ben." Adam said as he waved his phone around. "I'm trying to get a signal."
"I get that but the water's moving on it's own." Ben stated. "Please, just look."
Adam rolled his eyes as he put away his phone and turned toward the pool. He was shocked that what Ben said was true. "What in the world?"
Ben crossed his arms and smiled. "Believe me, now?"
"Forget that." Adam exclaimed in terror. "Let's get outta here."
"Heh, heh. Right behind ya, Adam." Ben said in agreement before they ran away.
Once we were sure the two men were gone, Angel and I crawled out of the water and sat up.
"Wow." Angel exclaimed before letting out a heavy sigh. "That was so much fun."
I giggled a little before agreeing with him. I then looked up at the sky. "We've been here all day, big brother."
Angel's gaze followed mine. "Shoot, you're right."
As soon as the words left his mouth, we heard someone else approach. Please let it not be another human.
"I figured you took her here, Angel." the girl said with a knowing grin on her face.
Angel and I looked up at the girl, only to realize it was our sister, Kela.
"Where else could I've taken her?" Angel asked Kela, curiously.
Kela shrugged. "Also, I saw two men run out of here screaming. Mind telling me what that's about?"
"They showed up while Angel was teaching me how to swim like a merperson." I explained. "Thanks to Angel, we were able to hide before they saw us."
"That doesn't fully answer my question." Kela pointed out. "Besides, it's late. You need to change back so we can get home."
"You're right, Kela." I said in agreement before changing forms and standing up.
Kela turned to Angel. "Tell me why those two men ran out of this forest, screaming."
Angel changed forms and stood up before replying, "We scared them away by making the water move despite it not being windy, at all." He shrugged. "Humans, am I right?"
"Come on, you two." Kela said. "Let's just get home."
"Ok, we're coming." I assured her before me and Angel followed her home.
~Time Skip~
As soon as we got home, Kela turned to Angel and asked, "Did you tell Dawn she can't tell anyone what we are?"
Angel shook his head in response.
Kela then turned to me. "Don't tell anyone what we are, sis."
I raised an eyebrow at her. "Why?"
"It's dangerous." Kela replied. "People think we aren't real. It's safer for our kind if we just keep that way."
I let a heavy sigh before saying, "Ok."
"Now that's taken care of." Kela said. "Mom probably has dinner out on the table for us by now."
Angel and I nodded before following Kela to the dining room.
Once we arrived, Mom asked how my first merperson lesson went.
I told her it went well, and we even scared off a couple of humans. After dinner we went off to do our own thing. I in particular went in my room to write this entry. Ya know, in hindsight, I'm actually glad my family has this amazing secret. Even though I can't tell anyone, including my boyfriend Lance. Speaking of, I'm going on a date with him tomorrow. Hopefully that's just as fun as today was.
