This Tuesday morning started out no different than any of the others did for Jethro Hernandez. The smell of his mother’s black coffee had woken him up as it did so many times before. He could hear his parents talking about their days as they did every morning. Jet leaped out of his bed, washed his face, brushed his teeth and hair, and put on his uniform before going down stairs for breakfast.

“Morning, Jet.” His mother says before Jet can even enter the kitchen.

“Morning, mom. Hey Dad.” Jet yawns noticing his mom in her dark blue suit and brown hair pulled back in a ponytail. “Have a big case today?”

“Not really. Just some kids painting city hall like preschoolers at art time. I’m going to recommend to the judge that they all get community service after they clean up city hall of course.” Says his mom taking a sip of her coffee.

“Morning, son. Your breakfast is on the counter.” Jet’s dad tells him not looking away from his newspaper.

“Peter isn’t up yet? And where’s grandpa?” Jet asks sitting down at the table with his plate.

“Those two have decide to sleep in I guess.” Jet’s dad suggests. “Time for me to go wake them”

Jet’s dad grabs his doctor’s coat and keys from the counter and exits the room.

“What are you going to be doing today?” Jet’s mom asks finishing the last of her coffee.

“I’m going to Beck’s after school. We have to work on our Freshman Project. It’s due in a couple of weeks.” Jet answers swallowing a bite of toast.

“Fine with me. Just don’t stay out to late.”

“I won’t mom. I’m heading out. Have a good day.” Jet replies as he puts his plate in the sink.

“Love you! Just remember not to be out to late. Shoot for seven!” He mom yells after him.

“Will do, mom!” Jet yells back before closing the door.

Jet walks to the corner to wait for his school bus with his best friend, Beck, as he did every morning.

“Hey Beck. Where’s Ben? Riding to school again?” Jet asks taking his usual spot next to Becker.

“I know we’re twins and all but that brother of mine is so lazy. He’s riding his bike so he can get some more sleep.” Beck complains as the bus pulls up.

“Wow. It has to be rough going to school with your brother. Peter is six years older than me so we’ve never had that problem.” Jet smiles while getting on the bus.

“Rub it in, why don’t cha?” Beck chuckles.

The rest of the bus rides is filled with the usual subjects. The riders talk about televisions shows, after school clubs and crushes until the bus pulls in to the school.

Jet and Beck talk to each other about their projects until they walk into homeroom.

Their homeroom teacher, Ms. Nunez, sits at her desk as like every morning, grading papers.

Next to Ms. Nunez, Jet notices a girl he’s never seen before. The girl’s metallic-silver hair shines under the classroom light and her bright blue eyes shine like water touched by moonlight.

The new girl turns to look at jet and smiles at him.

Jet feels his face heat up and turns away quickly taking his seat at the back of the room next to Beck.

Ms. Nunez puts her papers to the side and stands up as the class takes their seats.

“Good morning, class. I’m sure you’ve noticed already but we have a new student joining our class. I’ll let her take it from here.” Says Ms. Nunez taking a seat.

The new girl steps forward with a large grin on her face. “Hello everyone. My name is Bianca Del Porto and I’ve transferred here from Wells, England. I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you.”

“Well done, Ms. Del Porto. Why don’t you take the empty seat in front of Mr. Hernandez.” Ms. Nunez points toward him.

Bianca walks toward Jet fixing her eyes on him. She winks at him before turning around to take her seat.

Jet can’t stop thinking about the way Bianca looked at him the rest of homeroom.

The rest of the morning goes by in a blur. Before Jet realizes it, he and Beck are walking to the cafeteria to lunch.

“Do you have a moment?” asks Bianca standing behind Jet and Beck.

“Sure.” Jet answers giving a confused sideways glance to Beck.

“Could I speak with you privately?” Bianca asks pointing to Jet.

“Yeah….Sure.” Jet replies. “Can I catch up with you after lunch Beck?”

“Sure.” Beck says walking through the cafeteria doors.

“I’m Bianca by the way but I guess after this morning you already know that.” Bianca giggles.

“I’m Jethro but most people call me Jet. That is- or was Becker or Beck I guess.” Jet rambles.

“Grand.” Bianca says still smiling at Jet. “On my way in, I noticed a nice little picnic table under a tree. Mind if we eat there?”

“Okay.” Jet answers still not sure what to make of Bianca.

The two walk in silence to the area outside that Bianca described on the side of the school.

“So what did you want to talk about?” Jet asks taking a seat across from Bianca.

“Well….the reason I asked you here is to talk about your dreams.” Bianca answers.

“How do you-?” Jet starts to ask.

“I think you were meant to be my shield!” Bianca blurts out.

“What…is a-?” Jet pauses remembering a dream he’s been having since last week.

“A shield is someone who protects a sword. Let me start at the beginning.” Bianca says taking out her lunch as Jet does the same thing. “A sword is someone who has a destiny to achieve. A destiny once prophesized by a seer is usually set in stone you see. A shield is a companion of sorts who helps a sword achieve their destiny.”

“And you think I’m yours? Why?” Jet takes a bite from his sandwich.

“Actually, I’m pretty certain you’re mine. I have powers of sorts and one of these powers is to see the future.”

“Whoa. You’re telling me that you can see the future and that I’m supposed to protect you? From what?”

Bianca sighs thinking of the best way to sum up the situation. “Both of your parents were once shields, you know?”

“My parents were no such thing!” Jet says standing up.

“Please, Jet. Let me help you to remember.” Bianca says. Her blues eyes start to glow and Jet can’t look away.

In a flood, memories start to rush back to Jet. He remembers his early childhood watching his parents dress in black leathery hide and the weapons they use to carry.

“I remember.” Jet says recalling a childhood filled with his parents fighting monsters.

“Your parents eventually wanted a normal life and wiped you and your brother’s memories to give you both a normal life as well. Don’t be too angry with them.”

“How can you know all of this?” Jet asks confused.

“Your parents protected mine for many years.”

“Let’s say I believe you. I’m not like that. I’ve never even been in a fight.”

“But you are. You just don’t know it-“ Bianca stops before finishing her sentence.

“What’s the matter?” Jet looks around wondering why she stopped talking.

“We can’t stay here now. She’ll get us!” Bianca collects her things wildly.

“Who?” Jet looks around again this time more frantically.

“The Lycus woman! I guess you would call them werewolves! The rest of my story can wait! Follow me toward the back of the school!” Bianca takes off toward a wooded area behind the school.

Jet hesitates but races after her after little deliberation.

“Why are we running behind the school? Wouldn’t it make more sense to stay where there are other people?” Jet jogs up to Bianca.

“That’s just it! We can’t let everyone get involved!”

“What is the-?” Jet starts to ask when a woman in a white suit steps from behind a tree. The woman has glowing yellow eyes, bushy brown hair and a grin with razor sharp teeth. Jet looked at the woman and instinctively backed away.

“The two of you aren’t going anywhere. The evil sorceress demands that I bring you to her, Bianca Del Porto or should I call you the Cancer of the Zodiac?” The woman smiles widely.

“Cancer? The Zodiac? What is she talking about?” Jet looks at Bianca expectedly.

“I’m a magic user. I have the ability to use magic like countless others but my prophetic powers are special. I have them because I was born into The Order of The Zodiac, a special group of people who are destined to protect the world from the Lycus and their evil sorceress.”

“Okay….what does the sorceress want?” Jet turns his attention back to the woman in front of him.

“Not much…” The woman smiles coldly. “just everything this world has to offer.”

“Currently, she’s after the powers of the Zodiac members. There are eleven others like me with unique abilities and the dark sorceress, Abyssinia is after those abilities. No one outside of her group knows what she wants with them but I can assure you it won’t be good.” Bianca answers.

“You know that much, do you? Then just give up and come with me.” The woman says as her eyes glow even brighter and starts to get taller.

“I refuse.” Bianca replies.

“Oh, I hoped you’d say that!” The woman says in a barely audible growl.

Jet looks on in horror as the woman starts to grow furrier and taller until she looks more wolf than human.

“Flores notics…” Bianca starts in Latin. “Flowers of the night, may your fragrance aid me in this battle. Protect us from the moon creature before us.”

“You pathetic witch. Calling on flowers to help you? It’d be easier for you to give up but only slightly.” The human-wolf hybrid charges right for Bianca and Jet.

Jet stands frozen in fear. He tries to speak but can’t move his mouth.

Bianca puts a hand out in front of her and bunch of blue flower petals smash into the wolf forming a barrier between the wolf and her prey.

The large wolf jumps back in surprise and pivots to the left trying to out run the petals but is again caught in them.

“These won’t hold me forever!” Growls the wolf.

Bianca turns to Jet. “She’s right! Please! I need your help! Summon a relic! Please!”

“What is a relic? How do I summon it?” Jet looks at her confused and wide eyed.

“Relics are items and weapons that belonged to heroes of the past! To summon one, you need only call power into your hand! Please close your eyes and focus!”

“Alright.” Jet closes his eyes and tries to focus on the air around him only this air seems to have weight.

Before long, Jet can feel the shape of something forming in his left hand.

“Jet!” A familiar voice yells from behind the wolf.

Beck stands at the wolf’s back unsure of what he’s just walked into. One look at the giant wolf and beck falls down. He shuffles slowly away from the wolf as it stalks toward him.

“Wha-?” Is all Beck says before the wolf charges at him with its teeth bare.

Not thinking, Jet holds the weapon in his hand and draws back the string to an arrowless bow.

An arrow appears as Jet releases the string and embeds itself in the wolf’s left shoulder. The wounded wolf howls and jumps out of sight in a blur of brown.

“Beck are you alright?” Jet asks racing to his best friend’s side.

“I’m okay but what was that thing and what is that?” Beck asks pointing to the bow in Jet’s hand.

“It’s a relic.” Bianca answers walking up from behind them. “It belonged to the great Archer, Tristan. I believe it is called Fail Not. If the aim of one’s heart is true, that bow will not fail you. A fine weapon.”

“Is someone going to explain what happened?” Beck asks sternly.

“It’s a long story.” Jet sighs.

“Might I suggest that we continue it at my place after school?” Bianca wonders allowed.

The boys both nod in unison.
