She lounges around from dawn till dusk. Sometimes she goes to the corner of her living room to catch some sun. She didn't mind it. She enjoyed it. It was a treat for her.
The sun and her plants are what keeps her sane. That and the
bird that flies by every day at 3 o'clock sharp. She didn't ask for the bird to
come to her. It just happened.
"Tell me little bird, why do you like to fly by my windowsill
every day?" She quietly asked.
"Well, I like to look at pretty things in between my
adventures. You just so happen to be one of the pretty things I see," The
bird chippered.
She paused. A smooth rush came over her like a cream slowly
sinking in a cup of cold coffee. She couldn't believe it. The bird called her
pretty! One of its pretty things they see in their day! The bird must fly by so
many things and people and yet, she was the pretty thing it likes to see every
day!
She smiled softly at the thought.
She paused again. Why is there a bird talking to her? And why
does she understand the bird?
"Why can I understand you?" She questioned.
"Don't you see? I am you. You are me. We are one in the
same," The bird simply let out.
"But how? We don't look nothing alike," She pointed
out.
"Tsk tsk tsk. You will learn soon enough," The bird
bluntly said. And with that, the bird was off to another adventure.
3 months pass by. This time, the bird sometimes passes by. After
the bird told her they are the same, nothing has ever been the same. She kept
thinking about its answers.
"I am you. You are me. We are one in the same" echoes
in her mind as she watches the sun rise with bags under her eyes. She's not
much of a sleeper. She is a little paranoid of falling asleep. She fears
missing out on time she has lost falling asleep. That and she is waiting on her
owner to come back.
She doesn't really know where her owner went to. She knows that
her owner was going to grab new toys for her since she behaved so well when
they went grocery shopping. She likes the toys that squeak and are made out of
colorful plastic. She throws them to and fro. She runs with it left and right.
She can't get enough of them. It is her sacred time to act without a care in
the world.
4 months pass by. The bird just stares at her some days. Without
saying a word. It is like it knows what she's thinking, and it lets her be.
Until one August afternoon she asks, "Hey I figured out why you said we
are the same".
The bird perched its head upright, interested in what she had to
say. The bird nodded its head in agreement, as if saying go on with it.
"We are both animals!" She exclaimed.
The bird intensely stared at her. It kept staring at her for a
couple of seconds. The bird let out a soft sigh and voiced, "No no no. Yes,
we are both animals but that is not why we are the same. Remember I am an
extension of you".
And with that, the bird flew away once again.
She tucked her paws inward into her belly and flopped down to
the wooden floor. She looked up to watch the moonlight shine its bright light
against her dark spots. How is the bird an extension of her? That doesn't make
sense. The bird flies. It has wings. She has paws. She walks and runs and
plays. She can't have adventures because she is waiting for her owner to come
back. Unless. Unless. No she doesn't believe it so.
3 months pass by. Snow gently falls on the windowsill of her
living room. The sun is kissing her white spotted fur and she feels at peace.
The bird flies by and lands on the tip of the wooden windowsill.
Curtains drawn to the side sway in the wind. They are a khaki color that are
semi transparent. She likes to pull it close to her when she gets cold. Her
owner forgot to set up her bed before her owner left.
The bird looked at her direction.
"Did you figure it out yet?" It questioned.
She strolled closer and confessed, "I've been thinking
about it for so long. Almost a year. I have a hunch, but I don't know if it's
right".
"Well, get on with it. Tell me. I'm curious," The bird
said chipperly.
"We are the same because I know you from my past," She
explained.
The bird wobbled closer and stared at the floor as if asking for
permission to be let inside.
"Yeah, you can come inside," She answered.
The bird took off and landed perfectly at the foot of the living
room couch.
"You see. I knew you would come to your own
conclusion!" The bird said in a sing-song tone and added, "I have to
tell you. I can't believe it took you a year to figure it out, but I have to
confess something".
She nodded in anticipation and squinted her eyes.
"You know me from your past. I am you. You are me. I am
your owner. You see when I was getting your toys, someone kidnapped me. They
threw me inside a trunk when I was getting in my car," The bird revealed.
She opened her mouth in shock. She howled in agony.
"I know I couldn't believe it neither. I guess wherever
they were sending me, I couldn't breathe and passed on. I always checked up on
you to see if you were doing okay. If someone picked you up seeing that you
were all alone," The bird finished.
She howled more loudly this time. She licked the bird on the cheek.
“Thank you for looking after me for a year. As long as you’re with me. It’s okay I can figure things out on my own,” She reassured.
