Katie had always been a bad driver. That’s why Melody, her best friend, always offers to carpool with Katie to go to school.
Today Katie looked out the car window, wondering if she will ever become independent. After all, everyone treats her like a child, even her best friend won’t let her drive to school on her own. I’m not to be trusted, Katie thought. Katie leaned closer to the window sill.
“Oops!” Katie said as she knocked her phone down in between the seat and the car door so that she couldn’t get it out until they parked.
A small glowing hole opened up on the floor of the car where the phone had fell, just big enough to fit a hand through. This was Katie’s chance to prove herself, so she, not thinking about the mysterious hole in the car, stuck her hand in to try and grab her phone. Suddenly, when Katie stuck her hand in the hole, it expanded to the size of a chair, and it sucked Katie in and Melody soon after.
The tunnel was filled with what could only be described as rainbow vomit. They were falling so fast that the colors muddled together to form a tie dye rainbow like pattern, and the walls of the tunnel felt like a slushy and vomit baby. When Katie touched it, she pulled back in disgust because it was very clearly a vomit texture. Katie almost stuck the landing to the now solid rainbow floor, but Melody crashed into her.
“Katie! Are you okay?” Melody said with concern. She hopped up, and she offered a hand to Katie.
“Yup, but the more important question is where are we?” Katie said and looked around the walls to see a ghost-like figure with a yellow glow around it.
“Is that Snapchat?” Melody asked and pointed to the ghost.
“Is that Facebook?” Katie asked and pointed to the bouncing F jumping into a blue pool.
“Are we in your phone?” Melody asked, not convinced that this was real.
“Phone! I need to find my phone” Katie exclaimed, and she started speed walking in a random direction.
Katie, with Melody close behind, approached a Sphinx-like statue. It had a small digital pad with numbers to the side of it. It looked like a guard to some kind of treasure.
“Hello! Do you know where my phone is?” Katie asked the Sphinx.
“I might know someone who knows something about your electronic device, however, he does not answer stupid questions. So, I will test you. You may ask me three questions about the password. For example, ‘what high school did the person who had this password go to’. If you enter the correct password, I will let you through” the Sphinx said in a dooming voice.
“How many digits is it?” Katie asked.
“Four” the Sphinx answered
“How old is the person who had this password?” Katie asked.
“Seventy five” the Sphinx answered.
Katie walked up to the digital pad and entered the passcode “1234”, and the Sphinx sat up and ran away. As the Sphinx sat up, dust filled the area, and Melody and Katie began to walk forward through the dust cloud, uncertain of what lay ahead of them.
Katie walked where she thought was straight ahead, however, she is not good with directions, and she ended up leaning to the right. When she walked far enough so that the dust cleared, she realized she couldn’t see Melody anywhere. However, she did see the Sphinx.
“What are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to go straight?” the Sphinx said, surprised.
“Did I not go straight?” Katie said while looking around for Melody.
“I can guide you on the right path if you solve another riddle” the Sphinx offered.
“Hit me with your best shot!” Katie exclaimed.
“I have a screen, but I am not a TV. I can call you up, who could I be?” the Sphinx asked.
“Easy, a phone,” Katie replied.
“Correct. Hop on my back” the Sphinx ordered.
Katie climbed on the Sphinx’s large back. If Katie had not taken rock climbing lessons, she might not have been able to climb the Sphinx’s large and steep back. When Katie got to the Sphinx’s head, it took off at what seemed like the speed of light, and in less than a second, she saw Melody looking up at her.
“Where were you?” Melody asked, “Did you get lost again?”
“Yeah…Come on let’s go get my phone back!” Katie changed the subject.
Katie slid down the back of the Sphinx, and the Sphinx ran back to wherever it came from. It was quite majestic, like a cat with wings gliding through the air. The road ahead looked like a river of music. When Katie stuck her hand into the water, various notes would make a sound, and she could feel the vibrations on her fingertips. Faint Lofi music filled their ears, and as they got closer, the music got stronger. The girls took a boat that was conveniently docked near the river. They rowed the boat until a huge whale popped up from below the surface, and it opened its mouth for air.
“Melody! That’s my phone! In the whale’s mouth” Katie said while shaking Melody.
“How do we get it” Melody asked, “without getting eaten?”
“Isn’t it obvious? We tickle it!” Katie chuckled excitedly.
Katie stretched her oar to the whale and lightly tickled the whale near its belly. The whale instantly started to laugh as the phone fell into the water. Katie reacted at the sound of the phone touching the water, and she swam just in time to grab the phone without it getting too damaged.
As Katie touched the phone, it started glowing so bright it forced Katie and Melody, who was up in the boat, to close their eyes. When the glowing stopped, the girls slowly opened their eyes to see they were in Melody’s parked car.
“That was a crazy dream” Melody said, “We went to this rainbow place, and solved riddles”
“Melody, I think that was real,” Katie said, staring at the palm of her hands to check if she was alive.
“No. That wasn’t real, don’t be silly Katie. Such a thing could not exist” Melody stared at the road ahead, without blinking.
Katie turned to her right out the car window, and she convinced herself that it was all a dream. Katie never fully convinced herself it wasn’t true, however, she never brought it up with anyone again, especially not Melody. Melody knew that their adventures couldn’t be possible with the knowledge she had now, but Melody was always a rigid person in her ideals. If this first hand account couldn’t convince her, nothing can. Therefore, this rainbow world remained as a “dream” in the eyes of everyone, nothing more than a fictional fantasy
