My story is entitled: The Chief in my village Nana Prempeh is noted as the man who takes nothing for granted in his leadership.
It is noted that the chief Nana Prempeh is said to be a person of sound mind due to this he does not take anything for granted. The chief of the village Nana Prempeh is a person who is supposed to be well built. It is only the chief who assists and helps in the settlement of disputes within the country due to this he is noted to have taken nothing for granted within the community or the village. The chief Nana Prempeh is outspoken and speaks French fluently. In some places or villages it is only the chief for instance Nana Prempeh who easily opens doors of opportunity. The Chief is noted to equate leadership with lordship and the acquisition of wealth whilst followership is made synonymous with syncophancy. The wrong notions have adversely affected the socio-economic development of the nation.
Leadership as in the aspect of the Chief takes nothing for granted. Leadership is the act of them influencing people to co-operate also towards the achievement of some goal. It is then termed as the act of being a leader. The leader who happens to be the chief is noted to be full of change, dynamism and energy. It is only the Chief Nana Prempeh who takes nothing for granted and he influences situations to see to it that things are done properly in a good manner. The Chief emphasizes that leadership also involves the process of providing direction and influencing individuals or groups to achieve goals.
Also Leadership as according to the Chief is an attempt on interpersonal influence directed through the communication process towards the attainment of some goals. The Chief Nana Prempeh also elaborates that leadership is the process of influencing others to work willingly towards organizations goal and to the best of their capabilities within the community. Also the essence of leadership as according to the Chief Nana Prempeh is followership that due to this fact the chief takes nothing for granted within the community. The Chief Nana Prempeh keeps hopes alive for the people within his community.
Again Leadership also involves other persons that is the use of influence and leadership as a known process. The leadership process involves an equal distribution of power among some leaders and other groups. The Chief Nana Prempeh who takes nothing for granted within the community and was appointed to rule by the elders and other dignitaries of the community. Also the leader who happens to be the Chief of the community rules also by self-appointment due to this the Chief takes nothing for granted within the community.
Also secretly or tacitly other informal leaders come up unawares. The Chief has the basis of power which is influence; it is the key elements in leadership that can be defined as the control which a person possesses and can then exercise others by then.
It is also the ability to then influence and persuade and motivate others which is based largely upon the perceived power of the leader.
The sources of a Leaders power that is the Chief power involves:
Reward Power: This is the power based on the ability of the administrator reward to those who comply with his or her directives or complete tasks. Coercive Power: It is this power of lawful or formal authority. This type of power is then derived through sanctions this form of power has title. The Export power is derived from superior competence or special ability skills or knowledge. The subordinate feels the leader has the relevant expertise or knowledge about something and also believes it exceeds their own. Also the Reverence power is the power based on the attractiveness and appeal of the leader. Also this type of power is commonly associated with charismatic leaders. The leader especially the Chief Nana Prempeh is noted to have charisma to inspire and then attract followers and the followers often desire to be like him.
The chief Nana Prempeh is noted to have the following characteristics as a leader. The Characteristics of the leader that is the chief involves high intelligence, imagination, competence and a sense of ability or direction. The Chief who happens to be a leader and plays a major role in nation building through policies decision making and the implementation strategies undertaken in the interest of the followers. The implementation of policies is also very essential for the realization of the citizens’ aspirations. The Chief Nana Prempeh takes the role as a follower in Nation building within the country. Also it is only the chief such as Nana Prempeh who tries to perform his assigned duties and then aims at improving his quality of life. The chief who happens to be the leader takes nothing for granted in his ruling because he has followers. The followers or elders in his council are the members of a group with some common objectives and who accepts to be guided.
The main functions of the chiefs such as Nana Prempeh and also not forgetting my late grandfather Togbe I included dispute settlement, the codification of customary law, arrangement of ceremonies and festivals,the organisation of communal labour and promotion of socioeconomic development. The Chiefs Nana Prempeh and my late grandfather Togbe I have been involved in the development of their areas since precolonial times in our community. However, some chiefs face new challenges such as demands for good governance, the introduction of information and communication technologies and expectations of international connections. In addition to royalty and seniority, education and access to powerful networks have become the key qualifications for chieftaincy election.
Finally , it is only the chief like Nana Prempeh who takes nothing for granted and helps the community during the celebration of festivals and also gives advises to the elderly during the the settlement of disputes. The Chief takes nothing for granted when judging cases and ruling an entire community or village.
