Yippee, it’s time to play

Ugh!

This belly is so bouncy I like jumping on here. Wow, look at that big fat toe move when I bounce.

Shh Mama is sleeping. Hey come over here and look out this window.

Let me grab this first.

Leave my tail alone.

Not your tail, this toe. It is wiggling and calling to me.

Oh look there is a deer in the yard. We should let the neighborhood know.

I said leave my tail alone.

But the toe disappeared.

Good morning neighborhood. We have a visitor here today.

Here comes Beau, he’ll make sure the deer goes elsewhere. So what do you guys want to do today?

Maybe Mama will take us for a ride.

Rides are scary. I’m going to find a mouse.

Come on Baby, Mama is getting out of bed. Good morning Mama, can I smell your breath?

I will stay put and watch out the window to ensure the deer does not come back. Besides, Beau is looking sleek today. Also, that hunk of dog, Roscoe, might show up.

Mama is getting out of bed. I will play with my bone which is in the crate.

Woohoo, the big fat toe is moving around. It’s getting out of bed and heading to the throne room. I’m going to check out the throne room.

Enjoy yourself. Mama will go into the TV room soon enough. I will lie by her chair so she can give me a treat or a pat.

Why are these toes so small? They should be big and fat like this one. What’s that noise?

Yay! Here comes Roscoe. I’d follow him to the river any day.

What does Mama leave inside the throne? It makes a whooshing noise when she leaves the room.

You are such a brown noser following Mama around like that.

What? I should be like you waiting for Mama to sit in her chair and then nagging her to go outside.

Did someone say outside?

Sandy did when he got in his hammock.

Smell that? Mama got the garbage ready to go out to the can. She may let us go out when she takes it out. We may even go for a ride in the car.

Wait here by this chair, Mama will sit in it before she lets us outside.

Mama just refilled the water and food bowls, I'm getting a drink first.

I need to make room before I can eat anything. I’ll sit here and request that she let me go out.

You only sit there and stare at her. Why don’t you whimper like I do?

See, sitting and staring at her works. Why change?

Hold on a minute I will come outside with you. Let's see if Roscoe and Beau can play with us.

I only want to make room for food. I will leave them a message about coming out to play after eating.

Whatever, I'd rather play now.

Okay, have fun. I’ll let Mama know that I am ready to eat. Mmm, this food is so good. I’m full. Sandy, wake up. I want to wrestle with you. I guess I will chew on my bones before I take my nap.

Let me inside now. I want to come in. I’m lonely and cold, let me in.

Don’t take my bones.

Play with your old bones, I want to take a nap on Mama’s feet. Did you save any food for me?

Sandy, wake up. I want to play. Baby, play with me. I smell Roscoe on you. Were you licking each other? Baby, come here and play with me.

Buster, leave me be. Just let me lay here. Why don't you go chew on your bones?

Buster, have you seen my mouse? Baby, have you seen my mouse? I’ll check the rest of the house for my mouse.

Baby, what have you been eating? Your wind smells good enough to eat. Is that how my wind smells?

Possibly, we eat the same food at the same time.

I’ll clean the inside of my leg while I wait to sniff my wind.

Hey, did you guys know you can’t hold water in your paw?

For Fido’s sake, Sandy, that water is for drinking not playing.

Have some patience, Buster. Sandy is just 5 months old. He is still learning about things.

I will keep an eye on him to make sure that he stays out of the food bowl.

Whatever, dude. I’m tired.

Sandy, how do you get up that high? Is there any food up there? Any toys? Come on, Baby, let's play tag with Sandy.

Buster, I just want to lie here and wait for Mama to take us in the car.

Sandy, what are you doing back there? I hear you but I don’t see you. Sandy, where are you?

Buster, you are too noisy. I’m going to go to sleep on the bed.

I’ll be in the crate with my bone if you want me.

Sandy, leave my tail alone.

But I want to play. Watch how fast I can run.

If you don’t leave my tail alone I will flip you over.

Baby, I only want to play with you.

Leave my tail alone, Sandy. I need to get some rest before I go out again.

I want to play with someone or something. I wonder if anything fun is behind this door? Wow, what is that speck floating in the air?

Who took my bone?

Did you look in your crate?

Ahh, thank you. Sandy, go play with your jingle ball. Mama is writing today so I’m going to nap with Baby.

Look out, here I come! Is your ear ticklish? Ooo, you need a pedicure. Your tail moved, I’m going to get it.

Alright Sandy, now that you woke me up let’s play.

Geez, can’t a girl get any sleep around here?

Yay! Baby is going to play with us. Catch me if you can?

Hey guys Mama is filling the food dishes. Everyone needs to behave.

Time to eat. Fish are better than mice.

It smells so good. I can’t wait for the food dish. I’m going to eat some kibbles.

Buster, you won’t have room for your food.

I don’t care. I can’t wait. The kibbles are ready now.

Here’s Sandy’s food bowl. Here’s Baby’s food bowl. And here’s Buster’s food bowl. Now I can go to bed. Good night my babies.

Received your story through the Critique Circle email. You managed to convey the possible nonsensical conversations and chaos where pets to speak, that was fun. My personal suggestion would be to lessen the characters for a better flow and cadence. That’s just my take. Hope it helps.

Fun! I love to think about what goes on in my dog's head too and to have those conversations. I think most pet parents do. Thanks for sharing the insights.
