Fog swept the streets of New York. As my alarm goes off at exactly 5:30 am, I put my hand out to reach the snooze button but as I do, I see the foggy sky. I swear I had just checked the weather forecast last night but, I guess the news was wrong. Anyways, I have to get up and make my morning coffee with avocado toast. Todays vibe seems kind of off but I try not to overthink it. I get my feet into the slippers that are alongside my bed. I walk to my kitchen and I look outside the big window and I can see the sun coming up. I can see the leaves rustling off the trees. I go to the restroom to brush my teeth and after I finish I walk back to get dressed for the day. But, as I get dressed I got a feeling in my stomach telling me to stay home. I still put on some clothes but not the clothes I would go to work in. I put on some comfy clothes and I went to put my tea kettle on the stove to warm up some water. While doing that, I heard a faint knock on the door and footsteps leading back to the elevator. As I approached the door, I looked through the peephole, I saw no one. I went back to the stove and poured the hot water in a mug and started to make my coffee. For a long time now I have been wanting to go shopping and take some time off for myself, so I decided that today I would just walk around the city and go shopping. As I get my keys and purse I started to lock my door and head towards the elevator to take me downstairs to the main entrance I start to notice the lights in the apartment hallway flickering. I don’t think much of it. When I got to the main exit I felt the wind pushing me. I start to get into my car and turn on the heater but, I realized I forgot my wallet on my dresser. So, I get my things and go back up on the elevator and as I got onto the elevator I started to realize how slow it’s going up. I start to panic a little and I feel my anxiety coming in a rush. The little number on top means what floor I am on. It reads in the color red “7”. I live on the eleventh floor so, I thought someone probably pressed the button to go down but, will have to ride with me but, once the elevator stopped it completely stopped and the doors did not open. I press the button and the doors still didn’t open. As I was still trying to figure out how to open them, the lights went out. I right away grabbed my phone to turn on the flashlight. I start looking to see if I can find an emergency but i cant find one. I start to try and open the heavy steel doors. “You can do this Lilly,” I say as I’m trying to encourage myself. After 5 minutes of trying I just sit down hoping I find another way. I look up and see a little hole and so I jump continuously and try to open the hatch above. I finally pushed the hatch door aside and now i’m trying to get up on top of the elevator. I finally push myself up and I make sure I don’t drop my only souce of light which is my phone because it’s pitch black. “Don’t look down, Don’t look down” I shakily whispered to myself. I look around for any sort of ladder or stairs and then I seen a ladder but against a wall and to get there you have to jump off the elevator. I didn’t want to be here anymore so I made it quick and I jumped. I held on for dear life and i start climbing very slow because I dont know how stable the ladder is. I make it all the way to the 8th floor and I go onto the exit stairs and take the stairs all the way up to the eleventh floor. I get my keys and open the door and set my things down. I walk back out and I knock on my neighbor Mason’s door. “Hey you, are you okay” Mason asked me. “Yeah I just came to see if you can keep me company since i’m by myself” I asked him. “Yeah sure!” he said. We can hear people walking around as we make it to my house. He asks if I have candles because it’s very dark. I pull out some candles from under the cabinet and I light them up. I also get a board game and we start playing it. After 2 hours pass, we look outside and we still see many people talking and people holding flashlights to get around. The moon is the only source of light outside which isn’t helping as much because the heavy white clouds are covering it up. We start to tell eachother jokes and talk about work. Another 3 hours have passed and I look at my phone and it says its 8:30 pm. I start going to bed and Mason is going to sleep on my couch and we hope that the lights turn back on tomorrow. As the wind comes through the window , it starts to get cold. I get up and I check to see if the power has came back but, it hasnt. Another day passed and as I look outside their are riots because of no power across the whole city. Many people are going crazy because of no power. People are running out of food and things to do. Mason and I talk and make some ham and cheese sandwiches. We try and look for some more candles for later tonight. We pass time by playing cards, drawing, and also talking. By the time it hit 9:30 pm, we were already asleep and had candles lit all around my apartment. Weeks go by and Mason and I were up talking in front of the window and when we were looking at the moon 3 bright big flashes light up the sky, all of a sudden all the city’s power goes back on and everyone was cheering. Many months go by and the city has not been the same since because no one knows why the power went out citywide for many weeks.
