It was a cold winter day. Just two days before Christmas break. And people were already talking about what they would wear to prom. The word 'prom' echoed in my head as I remembered my prom...
"You can't leave now," my friend hissed at me as I tried to leave the prom that she forced me to come to. "They are about to crown Prom King and Queen!"
"And yet I am here in sweatpants and my boyfriend's hoodie while he is passed out on the floor from drinking the punch that was obviously fortified," I whispered harshly. "So, yeah, I'm leaving." I turned to leave when my name was called from the stage.
"And this years Prom Queen is... Andromeda Davis!" The entire gym went as quiet as the grave. Not even a single cough, sneeze, or cricket could be heard. Holly, my best friend, glared at me.
"You switched them out." An accusation. Not a question.
"Of course I did! I never won anything in my life!" I yelled at her.
"Why? Why would you do this to me? To our friendship?" she questioned.
"Because you didn't deserve it. Yes, we were friends, yes, we were both on the ballots, yes, we were both on the prom committee, yes, I did all the work while you were there making out with one of your many many boyfriends, yes, you are a man-eating trollop, but no, you didn't deserve to win. You would've bought your prom queen position so I acted before you did. Any other questions?" I snarled at her.
"Why do you think I was carrying this big ass purse?! I was going to plant my ballots with me as prom queen and Jake as king!" she roared.
"Jake is my boyfriend you manipulative tyrant sorry excuse for a person! You are just a stain on humanity!" I yelled at her. "No wonder you parents threw you away!" I smirked.
"You just mad because you don't have parents," she grinned. I hauled back and slapped her so hard she fell to the floor. She looked up at me with shock.
"You hit me," she growled as she touched her face where she was hit. The way she said it caused fear to slither down my throat and into my heart, but I didn't let it show on my face. I looked down at her with my cold, black eyes.
"Yes, I did. And I would gladly do it again should you come within range of my hand," I said with an adder's smile. She pulled out a knife and threw it towards my heart. And it hit home.
I blinked suddenly and Holly was standing in front of me.
"Andromeda, did you hear my question?" she asked, concern on her face.
"No, I'm sorry. I spaced out. Can you repeat it?" I said, a shiver tracing my spine.
" I asked if you were going to prom this year. It's our senior year you know," she said as she opened up my locker.
"I think I won't. I went last year remember?" I said trying to remember if I did or not. I never could remember my past. No matter how hard I tried to remember my past, I always ended up remembering my future. She looked at me with fear.
"You didn't go to prom last year. Or homecoming," she said, worry dancing in her green eyes. "You were new last year and you arrived after both were long over."
"I was a new student last year?" I asked even more confused.
"Yes, you were new. I tell you that every time you say your glad not to be a new student any time you see a new student."
"No I don't," I huffed as Jake walked by. "Is he a new student?"
"Yes, he arrived this morning," she rolled her eyes.
"I'm glad I'm not a new student," I said. Holly threw her hands up in the air as if I just proved her point.
"What did I say?" she asked.
"You like the color green?" I shrugged.
"No! Well, I mean I do, but that's not the point! My point is we just talked about how you say you're glad not to be the new kid any time you see a new kid. The a new kid walked by you asked if he was new. I said yes, and then you said your glad you're not the new kid."
"When did that happen?"
"Just now!"
"I don't remember it happening."
"Clearly. Look I'll see you later okay. I am trying to get us on the Prom committee still." I watched her as she left. I shrugged. I saw the new kid and he stopped in front of my locker. I looked at him closely.
"Your new aren't you?" I asked.
"Yeah, just transferred yesterday. Remember? I asked you out yesterday too."
"You did? When?"
"After lunch," he said his blue eyes flashing.
"Oh. I'm sorry, I don't remember that ever happening. It was nice talking to you though." I kissed his cheek and proceeded to walk into a wall so fast I heard the inside of the wall echo. Or was it my head?
"Are you okay?" he asked.
"I'm fine officer. Was I speeding?" I asked before I fell to the floor. Hitting my head. Again. When I woke up, I saw a red plus sign on the wall behind an old fat lady with a grumpy looking face. "Oh, your awake," she startled.
"Why was I sleeping?" I asked.
"You hit your head pretty hard. Twice."
"I did? When?"
"Three days, two hours, sixteen minutes and forty three seconds ago."
"The fact that you counted all of that is sad and proves you don't have a life."
"That isn't true!"
"Yes it is. Sitting at home playing online bingo and feeding twenty three cats doesn't count as a life." I said, sitting up so fast my head hit another thing.
"Hmph. Serves you right."
"Why am I being sued from the right sir?" I asked before passing out and hitting me head again.
