My something special

Written in response to: "Write a story that feels lonely, despite being set in a packed city."

Thriller

The evening felt morbid and dark. I could tell a storm was approaching by pretty soon. The city was filled with the voices of the people in this solemn hour of dusk. One could hear the laughter of children who knew nothing of the world and what’s out there. Slowly as the sun bid goodbye the lights in every house turned on to perhaps welcome the night.

I looked over from my cup of coffee towards the window giving me a glimpse of all sorts of people in their little apartments they called ‘’ home ‘’

I’ve met all sorts of people from my little window well seen all sorts of people you could say. All are different in their own way like the old lady who calls her children every night to make sure they’re ok or the guy with the glasses who watches every episode of Seinfeld after he gets home. I could go on and on about it all but I think you know what I mean.

People can be predictable sometimes if you think about it. Maybe some might change but at the end of the day they’ll still choose coffee over tea because like it or not they’re used to it to the same f***ing routine.

Makes me bored sometimes I could change my apartment if I wanted to but let’s admit it I can’t afford it with my salary. Besides other than the boring old lady or the 4 eyed guy I have something here something special.

I stood up from my usual seat and made my way towards the kitchen sink that was towered with a bunch of dirty utensils. I wonder how long has it been since I’ve washed them. It’s funny how the room is always silent even though it’s pretty noisy out there. I’ve been living alone for many years now but I’ve never noticed how lonely it was. The walls were already covered with dust and despair as the bright blue color it once were was soon replaced by dull grey.

I was soon startled by the sound of yelling probably from upstairs again. There used to live an old couple but they were replaced by two very incompatible ones who would fight about God knows what.

I made my way to my cozy seat and watched people’s lives flash before my eye. My eyes moved from one apartment to another only to find Karen entering the bar from the end of the street. She was my colleague. We never really talked or anything but I knew her. Her hair was much shorter than before she wore a black leather jacket and tight jeans that exposed her curves. Nevertheless she looked pretty happy soon she was greeted by a group of people one of them being Alex. Weird I thought she said she had no plans.

I watched them all enjoy the night but I couldn’t help but feel a little lonely. I knew I shouldn’t do it but I decided to call her anyway. My hands shook as I dialed her number the room was getting colder by every minute. Before I knew it she picked up my call.

‘’ Hey Alex it’s me, Mark ‘’

‘’ Mark? ‘’

‘’ Yeah Mark Hasting? Remember? the tall guy with messy hair? ’’

‘’ Oh yeah wassup Mark ‘’

‘’ You busy right now?’’

‘’ Um yeah kinda I’m finishing a project you see ‘’

‘’ Oh’’

‘’ How about we talk later? ‘’

‘’ Yeah sure ‘’

I could hear the sound of the clock ticking by and I was glad because that meant that whatever happened just now will eventually pass away in time. It’s not the fact that she lied about where she was it was because she pretended to even know me.

I glanced over my shoulder to find her laughing with her friends I shrugged off whatever feelings I was feeling and decided to focus on other stuff. My alarm started to ring as soon as the clock struck 8:00 pm.

‘It’s time ‘I thought

I looked out the window to find her sitting in her window side seat at the cafe with another book on her hand. I wonder what book she is reading today. I don’t know her name or her whereabouts but everyday she would sit there and just read or drink coffee. She doesn’t do anything special but I like watching her. She’s my something special.

The next day I felt super energetic like I wanted to climb a mountain or something whatever it was I felt great. I even decided to go for a walk in the morning it was great I don’t know why I hated walks before. Even the people at my office were less annoying today nevertheless I got home pretty early than ever only to find Alex standing outside my door with some documents on her hand.

‘’ Alex? ‘’

‘’ Oh hey Mark ‘’

‘’ What brings you by? ‘’

‘’ You kinda left some paperwork at the office so I came here to give it to you’’ she replied with a smile

Oh fuck not more paperwork.

‘’ Um yah sure thanks’’

‘’ Please come in though I can make you tea, coffee, water maybe? ‘’

She hesitated for a while but finally agreed. I could see how tired she was from the whole paperwork but she was dressed well so I guess she must have another gathering or maybe a date perhaps?

Luckily the room was pretty clean so I wasn’t all worried about her entering inside. She looked around the room and sat down quietly while I made coffee for her.

‘’ Nice view ‘’ she spoke while looking out the window towards the sunset.

‘’ Thanks ain’t it pretty? ‘’

I soon made my way towards her with a cup of coffee. Hope she likes it.

‘’ Here you go a cup of coffee for the pretty lady ‘’

She smiled and began to drink still locking her eyes with the sun. Her eyes sparkled the whole time while her skin glowed like an angel. She could melt anyone’s heart with that innocent face of hers. I kept my eyes on her hoping she wouldn’t notice as I stared at her cleavage that was wet with sweat and soon made my way to her luscious breast.

But my thoughts were soon interrupted by her as she began to choke. What seem to started out as coughing soon turned into a breathless nightmare for her. I watched silently still sipping my warm cup of coffee enjoying the sight of her begging for air for life. I could watch this all day long.

I took out a small glass bottle labelled Rat poison from my pocket and smiled

Maybe I used it too much

I looked over my side to the cafe and found her staring at me with a smile on her face.
