The sun had just set, after the longest day of the year. Maxine was sat in her backyard content with life looking out at the vibrant orange and pink hues in the sky. Today had been filled with so much fun and adventure that it was a day that Maxine would never forget.
Let’s take a look back at this morning when the sun was rising high in the sky. Around 7:30 am Maxine awoke to the sound of her mother bringing her laundry into her room, although her mother was as quiet at as a door mouse. The golden rays of the sun had also made their ways through the glass pane making the room glow a golden colour. ‘Today was going to be a great day’ Maxine thought. Getting up Maxine got dressed and brushed her teeth. Slowly approaching the stairs, she heard an unusual sound downstairs, an unfamiliar sound. The closer she got the stiffer she became, sitting on a stool in the kitchen her worst nightmare… Jack Anderson! The school jerk.
Jack was known as the school jerk for one reason and one reason only he was nice to no-one and didn’t care about anything but himself. What could Jack possibly be doing in Maxine Scott’s house, he didn’t care about her, he didn’t care about anyone, so why was he here? Maxine’s mother looked up to make eye contact with her daughter. “Ah, Maxie you’re here, Jack here is my boss’s son and I need you to watch over him for a couple of hours.” “but mu...” Maxine tried to protest “No Maxine, I am your mother you do as I say, besides its just this once.” Her mother scolded. Maxine wondered why a 16-year-old boy needed watching over, but she didn’t ask her mum anything else as she already seemed mad enough without Maxine complaining.
Maxine’s mother rushed upstairs leaving her and jack together in the kitchen. One glance t Jack and Maxine’s hands started becoming clammy and the air became thick with tension. Maxine couldn’t be in the same room with a person such as Jack never mind be with him all day. What Maxine had never told anyone before, not even her mother who she tells everything to, is that she knows her mother is dating someone. Her father left a long time ago and Maxine is happy her mother has found a new guy she just wishes she had told her. Maxine snaps back into reality when she realises her mother is stood in front of her.
After her mother leaves, Maxine starts to cook breakfast when the front door slams. Maxine cranes her neck to the seat that Jack was once sat in. Turning off the breakfast, Maxine dashes out the door quickly to catch up with Jack. By the time she catches up with him, he’s with his mates in the skate park. To Maxine this was a strange sight, seeing the boy who couldn’t stand anyone in school surrounded by people and actually looking happy. Maxine tried to shout Jack, but no words would come out. Wham! Someone had lost control of their skateboard and gone straight into Maxine.
Thousands of pairs of eyes suddenly watched the two-lay helpless on the floor. This strange feeling come over Jack in that Maxine needed help. Without a second thought he ran over to Maxine and helped her off the ground. He looked at her in surprise before noticing the large graze on he shoulder. Maxine was in close proximity of Jack; this has never happened before only 2cm stood between them. She looked him in the eyes and could see the hatred disappear. In this moment he only cared for her and she only cared for him.
A stinging sensation drove Maxine back to reality when Maxine realised, they were still stood in the skate park. Her arm was grazed from top to bottom after the fall. Tears sprung to her eyes as the pain was unbearable. Home, that’s where she needed to be curled up with a book under blankets in the room that she called hers, but that was impossible when she had the school jerk to look after.
The door slammed shut as both entered Maxine’s home. Maxine was about to go upstairs until Jack grabbed her wrist. “Let me help you.” Those were the words Maxine needed to hear she was slowly crumbling, and she crumble anymore today especially Infront of Jack. The day was defiantly not going how Maxine wanted it to go, the suns was shining so why could she? Life wasn’t on her side. Jack walked back in with a cloth and some cream. He looked at Maxine and said, “I know you don’t like me I get it not many people like me, but I need you to listen to me because this is going to hurt a lot.” Maxine blushed with embarrassment; it wasn’t true she didn’t completely hate Jack she just disliked him because she thought he hated her. After she had her arm creamed up and cleaned the two went to get an ice cream together as they both agreed they needed a needed talk.
They both went and sat in a booth talking about anything and everything. The last day had brought them together tremendously. They were the closest that a pair of friends could be hours were spent together. The one day turned into many. Many days turned to many years but there was a secret that was bubbling under the surface.
After spending so much time together Maxine and Jack were invited to go out for an evening meal with Maxine’s mother. Maxine was delighted that her and Jack could for a meal together with her mother, it was lovely to see her mother create a relationship with someone she now deeply admired.
Leaving the house together the trio shortly arrived at the restaurant, to be led to a table with four chairs instead of three. Maxine’s stomach dropped she knew something was going to happen the only words that could come out of her mouth however were “th… the cha… chair?” upon instinct with a stiff upper lip her mother replied, “It is meant to be there, don’t ask any more questions.” Five minutes later, a man in a tartan suit arrived at the table. Mr Anderson had arrived, Maxine’s mothers’ boss and Jacks father. “Maxine meet my boss and boyfriend…”
