The universe is a mysterious place and we think we understand it but there's more to it then there seems. I live alone in my small apartment building which people say is haunted but that's just people trying to scare off other people. Things have been strange lately on odd feelings in the building and cold breezes in the middle of summer. I don't believe in ghosts but something is going on. I see weird figures in the hallways. I woke and went to my bathroom and washed my face and looked up to my mirror to see me and yes it was a mirror but I looked older and drained but everything else was the same green eyes and red hair and the same scar on my eyebrow but I looked different like I had seen things. I moved but they didn't they just stared. "Who are you?" I asked. "I am you" they replied. I run out, slam the door and get changed and leave. I come back and the ghost isn't there and I turn around and turn back and they are there. "who are you?" I ask again. "I am you" they replied. "But who are you?" I repeat. "I am you four years from now" they reply. "How? Am I dead? What is this?" I ask. "I am from a world the same as yours but I simply live four years ahead of you." They replied. "Did I die?" I question. "Yes you died." I looked at the mirror in awe and reached out a flash and I was in my apartment but the building was crumbled. The sky was red and a smog lay over the city and no signs of human life. Buildings crumbled and trash and fires everywhere and no animals. It was a ghost town. A world once beautiful and now destroyed. I flash back to reality. The ghost was gone. I lay there in shock and have so many questions. If that is what the world looks like in the future? That was just four years away so many bright futures gone. Could climate change have done that? I went back to the mirror. She was there staring and I asked “What caused such destruction?”. “Humans.” she replied “They are so careless and destructive they did not realize the signs”. “What happened? How did I die?” I asked curiously as I sat on a stool in the bathroom. “It started with climate change. World leaders and citizens didn’t realize the destruction they were causing. Fumes in the air created the smog and litter and trash created holes in the ozone layer. The rising temperatures created extreme weather conditions. Hurricanes hit and wildfires burned towns and cities humans and animals perished and animals started to die out. The water dried up and the ozone layer disappeared and the rays of the sun started killing people. Terror rained on people's death and despair. It was the end of the world. Cities crumbled, forests burned, people couldn’t breath from the smoke and the smog, hurricane after hurricane hit it was disaster after disaster.” She replied in an emotionless expression. I sat there in terror. How could this happen to our beautiful earth? “How could this happen?” I asked with tears in my eyes and shock on my face. “People wouldn’t listen, they didn’t see it coming. That is why I have come to warn of your future and the world's future. You must do something, you must change the world and open people's eyes but be careful because there are some terrible people in this world and you must make sure they do not think that you are crazy. You must warn people or let everyone face the fate of the world and remember there is no planet B.” she replied and disappeared. I just lay there with my thoughts thinking and thinking. I woke up the next morning and left my apartment and went to the library and studied and read books about the environment and our planet and got countless documentaries. I had one thought in my mind, I was going to make a change. I found protests and places to donate to help wildlife and found companies who support clean energy and invested in solar panels and helped warn others what could come. I would not let earth and the race of humans and animals succumb to that horrible fate. I spoke out about climate change and environmental justice and helped to educate others. It had been a while since I had gone to the mirror and she was still there and encouraged me to keep going for if I truly made a change she would disappear. So I did more to help build solar panels and fix wind turbines and fight wildfires. I went to schools and workplaces and educated workers and students. I had to make them see what was going on. This is the fight of our future. Io went to the mirror and she was fading. “You have succeeded. I am now alive again in the future but remember to continue fighting this is not over yet” she said and then vanished. It had been a year since my future self had been in my mirror. I am tired and drained and I don’t know what to do each day I go out and keep fighting. I try to remain positive and people have listened and made a change but it is hard. I come back to my mirror and look at and nothing happens. I just stare and think what to do next and just think what comes next. It has now been two years since my future self has visited the mirror and I have worked tirelessly. I went home and went to the mirror, everyday I have visited the mirror seeing if my future self has come back but nothing happened. Today I looked up at the mirror and she was there staring back looking even more drained. She looked at me and said “This is the final warning”.

Well Maci, if that story doesn't aqequately sum up my own anxieties and the exhaustion of trying to educate oneself about our impact on our environment, while being both vocal and taking action, and still trying to live a life... i just don't know what does. This is by all means not a postive story, tho i read the kernels of hope you are trying to sound here. May this not become an allegory for our present reality. May we have more time than i think we do.
