THE WAY IT HAPPENED
It was quarter past six in the morning and Blaize was on his way back to his apartment He works in a chemical plant and was feeling exhausted like anything after completing his nine hours shift, his eyes were bloddy red and had started watering. The only good thing happening that morning in Blaize's opinion was the cold breeze. Summer was on her peak and that cool breeze was soothing his head and eyes. He was also hungry but at that extent he only wanted to rest his head on his pillow but instead he rested it on his apartment door and after a moment he unlocked it and passed the hallway, entered his room and collapsed on his bed. immedeately he felt his head swimming in nothingness and it again happened.
Blaize was looking at a litle boy, hardly ten years old, standing at the door of a room which he already recognised. The child was listening intently pressing his ear on the door,Blaize took a step forward and got coldfeet after he listened a terrifying scream. Someone was beating the hell out of her, Blaize could tell that because this all seemed very familiar. The woman was pleeding for mercy "No Dave, please!" she was saying "You're hurting me" and Blaize heard another bang as if something made of metal hit someone's head.
"You lie!" someone yelled, this time it was a man's voice. The only thing that came to Blaize's mind after hearing that voice was hate, because somehow Blaize was familiar to all those events, whether it was that little child who was sobbing at the door, or the voices comming out of the room. Blaize wanted to comfort the poor kid but he was just standing rooted on the ground and then, another mind deafening scream and,
Blaize was in his bedroom again, He was all drenched in sweat. His heart was beating very fast, as if something was trying to get out of his chest. Blaize sat bolt upright and took a look at his phone, it was afternoon. Blaize called someone "You're late again son" a woman spoke in her calm voice from the other side.
"yeah mum, I am sorry I forgot to call you" Blaize replied, but his voice was shaking and Blaize in vain, tried to calm down "How are you?"
His mother took a moment or two to reply back " Is everything alright son ?" she asked "you sound stressed"
" I am alright mum" Blaize again tried but again he failed.
" Again that dream, isn't it?" she asked
Blaize said nothing because he knew that his mother knew everything, He was having those nightmares since he was 10 years old. His father used to abuse his mother for no reason, and the ten years old him still remember those days when he and his mother used to take regular beatings from his father for absolutely no reason and then his mother and father parted their ways, although not divorced but their worlds were different now.
"Listen son" Blaize heard his mother saying in her painfully calm voice "I know it still hurts you but a long time has been passed, you should move on"
"Yeah mom I should" Blaize sighed " But I cant"
"Your father no longer lives with us " His mother sighed back.
" He is not my father" Blaize said defiantly.
"okay then.... I've got to go" his mother replied " take care and eat timely".
"okay mum" Blaize replied back "Love you". and Blaize hung up the phone.
Days passed and climate changed, now there were drizzles in place of burning sun and Blaize was as usual on his way back to his apartment when his phone rang "morning mum" Blaize said picking up the phone "what's up?".
"I am good son " his mother replied " how are you?"
"fine" Blaize replied back.
"Listen Blaize, I called you because I wanted to have a word" his mother said in her painfully calm voice.
"yeah, tell me mum, I am listening" Blaize slowed down.
" Not like this son, I wanted you to come over" His mother said.
"Is everything okay mum" Blaize asked his mother "you sound worried".
"I am fine son, don't worry" His mother said in a comforting voice" Just come over, I wanted to have a word".
"Okay then" Blaize said after thinking for some time.
Blaize is on the way to his home. Travelling in a transport bus is not relaxing but blaize liked it since his childhood. His thoughts were playing catch me if you can with his brain and his head was again travelling into nothingness and,
Again that little kid standing at the door and again the screams of that very familiar voices and that fear in his chest and "Please Gentleman, your stop has come" he heard the bus conductor saying.
Blaize house was at a walking distance from the bus stop. so he started walking towards his house and after walking for twenty minutes he reached his front gate and stood there. He was still thinking why on earth did his mother call him so urgently, was it about his father? or anything more unpleasant. so he decided not to waste time and find the truth for him. Blaize opened the gate and entered his front yard and towards his front door. Before he knocked the door opened and his mother was standing face to face with a pleasant smile on her face. "welcome home my baby" She said spreading her arms and Blaize collapsed in his mother's arms, her warm hug vanished all his thoughts for a moment.
"so, why so urgent" Blaize asked his mother after having some tea and biscuits.
His mother didn't reply, Blaize waited for some minutes and said again
"mum, whats wrong" Blaize asked again.
"Come, I'll show you" she said finally and started waling upstairs and Blaize followed her. His heart was thumping hard against his chest because somehow he knew what was comming next but Blaize followed his mother without any word. she stopped outside the same room that used to haunt Blaize since childhood.
"what?" Blaize asked his mother.
"Dave is here" His mother replied with a grave expression on her face "He is inside".
Blaize was right, but he was not able to say anything at the moment so he remained silent and started staring the wooden floor.
"He wants to move back in" she continued but again Blaize didn't know what to say so again he decided to continue his stare game with the floor.
"He is diagnosed with Leukemia" his mother further continued.
Blaize looked above at his mother's face and she was looking straight in his eyes, Her expression was not something to be judged.
"what?" Blaize asked again to confirm.
"yeah son, you heard right" His mother replied with watery eyes, finally she was broke.
Blaize's eyes were burning and his heart started beating with the speed of a bullet train. He was trying to find words that could comfort his mother but he was not able to do so. Although Blaize hated his father from every corner of his heart but he never wanted this to happen to him, So Blaize took a deep breath and tried to speak
"How ?" Blaize spoke in a hoarse voice "when,,, can't we do something ?"
"I am afraid we can't, son" his mother sighed "he is in last stage"
"so... what should we do?" Blaize asked his mother passively.
" that's the reason I wanted to you to come here" his mother replied "He wants to spend his remaining life with his only left family"
Blaize was stunned. Deep down in the depths of his heart he always wanted to live with his father but his hate was resisting him to do so till then, but he never wanted thst to happen like this. All the hate in Blaze's heart vanished as soon as he heard that his dad was suffering with Leukemia. Maybe his dad was served right by dear destiny or maybe its Blaize's destiny that the biggest fear of Blaize's life was sitting on a wheel chair waiting for his desolition. Blaize and his mother were still standing on the door and Blaize decided not to open it so he retreated his steps.
Blaize is heading back to the city, and he told his mother that his dad can stay with them. Maybe this is the best thing to do, his head is buzzing and no thoughts are coming to relax him. He is simply not stable and slowly Blaize fells asleep and this time it felt relaxing and not disturbing. No dream, no child and no screams so when Blaize descended the bus, his head felt lighter than ever but still an uneasiness was there in the air. Blaize always wanted his dad to be punished for his bad deeds but he never wanted this to happen. Maybe it was his destiny but still then, he disliked the way it happened.
