Forest Whispers

by Joe Miller

The wind howled through the trees, sending a shiver down Mia's spine. She huddled closer to the warm campfire. The forest buzzed with the sounds of night—crickets. Leaves rustled, and an owl hooted in the distance. Then, a different sound pierced the air, making her heart race.

“Did you hear that?” she whispered, her voice barely rising above the crackling flames.

Tom, her older brother, glanced up from prodding the fire with a stick, his brow furrowing. “Hear what?” he replied, irritation creeping into his tone. He had been spinning ghost stories to impress his friends, and Mia’s interruption ruined the mood.

Mia strained her ears, the familiar sounds of the forest fading into the background. There it was again—a soft, almost melodic sound like a child’s laughter carried on the wind. It sent a chill racing down her spine. “It sounded like someone… or something,” she insisted, her eyes darting toward the darkened woods.

Tom rolled his eyes, but Sarah and Jake exchanged uneasy glances. “Maybe it’s just an animal,” Sarah suggested, though her voice wavered.

“No,” Mia shook her head, her heart pounding. “It’s too… human. It’s coming from over there.” She pointed toward the dense thicket at the edge of their campsite, where shadows danced ominously in the flickering light.

Jake stood up, brushing off his jeans. “I’ll check it out,” he declared, trying to sound brave, but Mia could see the uncertainty flickering in his eyes.

“Wait!” she called, but it was too late. Jake had already stepped into the darkness, his flashlight slicing through the night. The laughter echoed again, clearer this time, sending a wave of dread crashing over Mia.

“Jake!” Tom shouted, but silence swallowed his voice. The laughter faded, replaced by an eerie stillness that gripped the forest.

Mia’s heart raced as she exchanged worried glances with Sarah. “We should go after him,” she urged, her voice trembling.

“Let’s just wait a minute,” Tom said. “He’ll be back.”

The seconds stretched into minutes, the weight of the night pressed down on them. The laughter returned, now closer, and Mia felt a cold sweat break out on her forehead. “Did you hear that?” she repeated, her voice rising in panic.

This time, it wasn’t just laughter. It was a chorus of voices, soft and sweet, beckoning from the shadows. “Come play with us…”

Mia’s breath caught in her throat. “We need to go. Now!” she urged, grabbing Tom’s arm.

“Hold on!” Tom protested, his eyes darting toward the thicket. “What if he’s in trouble?”

Before they could decide, the thicket parted, and Jake stumbled back into the light, his face pale and eyes wide with terror. “We have to leave,” he gasped, glancing over his shoulder as if something were pursuing him.

“What did you see?” Sarah asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

“I don’t know,” Jake panted, shaking his head. “But it’s not safe here. We need to pack up.”

“Why? What happened?” Tom pressed, his irritation replaced by concern.

“I heard them,” Jake stammered, his voice trembling. “They were calling me. They wanted me to come closer.”

“Who?” Mia asked, her heart racing. “What did they look like?”

“They were… shadows,” Jake replied, his voice barely a whisper. “But they felt real. They want us to stay… "

Mia felt a cold grip of terror as she realized they were not alone. The forest had awakened, and it was hungry for company. “Did you hear that?” she whispered again, but this time, it was not a question; it was a desperate plea for escape.

“Let’s go!” Tom shouted, urgency flooding his voice. “Now!”

As they scrambled to gather their things, the laughter echoed again, now mingled with whispers that swirled around them. “Stay with us… "

Mia’s heart raced. She grabbed her backpack. Her hands shook. “Run!” she yelled, and together they bolted into the darkness. The forest closed in behind them.

The moment they broke into a run, the cool night air rushed past Mia, filling her lungs with the scent of damp earth and pine needles. The forest loomed around them, shadows stretching like fingers, grasping at their retreating forms.

The laughter echoed again, a haunting melody that danced through the trees, wrapping around them like a chilling fog.

“Faster!” Tom urged, his voice strained as he pushed ahead, the beam of his flashlight flickering wildly. The light illuminated the gnarled branches overhead, casting eerie shapes that twisted and writhed in the darkness. Each step crunched on the underbrush, the sound sharp and jarring against the backdrop of their pounding hearts.

“Where do we go?” Sarah gasped, her breath coming in quick bursts. The fear in her voice was palpable, and Mia could feel her own heart racing in sync with the frantic rhythm of their escape.

“Just keep moving!” Jake urged, glancing back over his shoulder. The shadows seemed to shift, dark forms flitting just beyond the reach of the flashlight’s glow. “Don’t look back!”

Mia’s pulse quickened. She felt the air grow colder, a biting chill that seeped into her bones. The laughter morphed into whispers, swirling around them like a sinister breeze. “Stay with us… ” The voices were sweet yet menacing, echoing in her mind, tugging at her resolve.

“Did you hear that?” Mia shouted, her voice cracking with panic. “They’re right behind us!”

“Just run!” Tom yelled, his eyes wide with fear. He pushed through the underbrush, branches snapping back and slapping against his arms, leaving angry red welts on his skin. The forest felt alive as if it were closing in around them, the trees leaning closer, their bark rough and jagged.

Sarah stumbled, her foot catching on a root that jutted out like a claw. “Help!” she cried, her voice laced with desperation. Mia skidded to a halt, her heart racing as she turned back.

“Grab my hand!” Mia shouted, reaching out. The ground felt uneven beneath her feet, the damp earth squelching as she shifted her weight. She could see Sarah’s terrified eyes, glistening in the dim light, and the shadows danced just beyond her peripheral vision.

“Come on, Sarah!” Jake urged. He rushed back, grabbed Sarah’s arm, and pulled her up. “We can’t stop!”

They regained their footing, and the laughter erupted again, louder this time, echoing through the trees like a twisted symphony. “Join us… join us…” The voices wrapped around them, seductive and chilling, making Mia’s skin crawl.

“Where are we going?” Sarah panted, her breath coming in ragged gasps. “We can’t just run forever!”

“Just keep moving toward the road!” Tom said, his voice cutting through the chaos. “We’ll find a way out!”

“Keep going!” Mia urged, her heart pounding in her chest. The whispers grew louder, more insistent, wrapping around her like a shroud. “Stay with us… forever…”

With one final burst of energy, they broke through the trees and stumbled onto the gravel road, the cool night air hitting them like a wave. The laughter faded into the distance, replaced by the sound of their heavy breathing and the rustle of leaves behind them.

Mia's heart raced. The echoes of the forest lingered in her mind. “Let’s get to the car,” she urged, her voice steadying as they began to walk down the road, the gravel crunching beneath their feet. The night felt heavy with unspoken fears, but they had escaped—at least for now.

Hi, I'm here from the critique circle. I really enjoyed your story, especially your imagery. I was a bit lost with the characters though, as they seemed to just be there from nowhere. Overall I thought it was very good.

Hey, Joe, I arrived at your story through the Critique Circle mail. I really liked your starting paragraph, it really sets the mood. The very first sentence is also pretty good. I think the "It's too human" dialogue from Mia is too on the nose and kinda reduces the tension in the story a bit. I also think that the story could have a stronger ending. Great job and let's keep on writing!
