The quest of the golden sword

A young man, in his early twenties, climbing up to the entrance to the cave which legend has it that the golden sword lays deep into the mountain that holds the golden dragon. The young man knew his goal and what he had to do if the banishment that his father laid upon him. His father, the King of Xafra, had banished him for having too big of an ego. But King Gloras did give a request to his newly banished son to go on a quest for the banishment to be lifted. Which so happened to retrieve the golden dragon sword and in the process of slaying the golden dragon that guarded the sword. The young prince accepted his fathers request to retrieve the sword and the banishment.

Theodas, the oldest prince to King Gloras, knew exactly where to go to ask around to find this cave that belonged to the great golden dragon. Theodas traveled 8 days straight to get to the city of atherton, which only selected locals were happy to help. The locals who did help told him that the golden dragon lay deep into flattened mountain that lay in the snowy mountain range. It took Theodas to get to the entrance of the cave for 3 days straight. As Theodas stood on the landing, staring at the entrance of the darkened cave. But he couldn’t stand up straight for long and had to place his hands on his knees to fully catch his breath.

Before taking a step forward, Theodas reached behind him to grab his waterskin canteen and took a few big gulps of water. Without any hesitation, Theodas put a heavy splash of water on his head to cool him down a little. He instantly regretted it and knew he needed to conserve his water. He took one last deep breath before taking on the quest that laid in a cave before him. Theodas double checked his belt, purposely where his weapons hung. In that moment that he checked, the warhammer and his long sword clinked together. Theodas moved his warhammer to the front of his belt which laid on his left leg. Once he readjusted himself, he stared down at the pure darkness of the cave. Theodas did one last nervous deep breath before taking the first steps into the cave.

As Theodas goes further in the darkened cave, the more he was dreading what task lays ahead of him. He’s never had to kill anyone or anything before. Theodas knew that the golden dragon is one of the rarest dragons of them all. This specific gold dragon is tied to the legendary golden dragon sword and whoever carries the sword is the master of the gold dragon. But Theodas was ordered by his father to slay the dragon for the banishment to be lifted. Theodas, stopped in his place, trying to come to the right decision that won't hurt anyone or anything. Theodas knew the only option which he already accepted by entering the cave. Theodas chuckled at his decision before moving forward into the cave.  Theodas kept up the steady pace the further he went. After a while, He knew the entryway had to be coming up sooner than later. Within a half dozen paces, Theodas is approaching a large brass door with a sign at Theodas’ eye level. He read the sign as follows, “ Beware! Enter at your own caution”

‘Wow, what a warning.’ Theodas thought while rolling his eyes and smirking while opening the large door. As Theodas slowly opens the door, he slowly scans the giant dome corridor, several pillars throughout the corridor, with a chained up Giant Gold Dragon. Theodas heard its breath rising and falling as if it was asleep. Theodas scanned the room further while quietly moving towards a pillar. He noticed another door that was on the other side of the domed corridor. Theodas stealth his way over to the opening without waking up the dragon who seemed to be in a deep sleep. Before Theodas entered the pathway of stairs that headed further into the mountain. He looked back at the chains that were holding this beautiful creature. Theodas started going down the pathway focusing on the next step unknowing when the end is.

It took Theodas some time to reach the bottom of the stairs with the freezing pathway. Theodas stood for a moment looking at the wooden door that was padlocked shut. Without hesitation, Theodas dropped the lock with the heel of his boot which broke easily. When Theodas stepped into the room a large amount of heat punches him in the face. Theodas was a little surprised by the drastic temperature change this deep in the mountain. As Theodas adjusts to the room, he scans the room which was empty except for a gold dragon sword. Theodas’ eyes were glued on the floating golden sword in the middle of the room. Theodas starting one step forward at a time without even realizing it until he was is arms reach of the sword was in front of him. Everything inside of Theodas is urging him to reach out for the sword and he desperately wanted the sword. Theodas reached out his right hand to grab the handle. As his hand gets closer to the sword, the brighter the sword shines of gold.

The moment that Theodas gripped the sword. The dragon’s eyes opened and with a fiery roar that shook the inside the cave and made Theodas to jerk his head the he came.A Woman’s voice echoed in his head ‘The Sword has chosen’.As the words echoed away, Theodas felt a rush of power going through his veins. Making them throb in agonizing pain for Theodas, who fell to his knee and breathing heavily. When the power reached his head, his nose started to bleed which made Theodas shut his eyes hard and grunt in pain. By the time the power reached every corner of Theodas’ body and his breathing settled. Theodas opened his eyes with the power of the gold dragon imprinted in his iris’. Theodas knew what  he had to do next and with all of his shaky hands he got back up on both feet. Theodas grinned down at the sword before heading back up the way he came. He was waiting for the cold to hit his face but it never did. In a matter of no time, Theodas got to the top of the pathway without being out of breath.

Theodas’ eyes focused on the center of the giant dome corridor which so happened to have no dragon and no chains. Theodas’ nerves and panic grew inside his chest as he was scanning the room looking for the dragon. Before Theodas could locate the dragon. It aggressively landed in front of Theodas, making the ground around them to shake. The shakiness of the ground made all of the pillars to break and crumble forcing the dome corridor to follow. Theodas quickly noticed and looked up at the dragon who looked like it was waiting for him to do something.  Without even thinking, Theodas moved forward towards the chains on all fours of the dragon and broke them with the golden sword. When Theodas broke the last chain. The dragon jumped towards Theodas, who took a step back out of surprise, grabbed him with its two front claws and pulled him close while flying directly up. Towards the glass opening on the top of the crumbling corridor around them. Some part of Theodas knew that the dragon wasn’t going to hurt him but save him.

Little did Theodas know what road lays in front of him.

I'd like to see more of a challenge for him to get the sword, it seems too easy. It needn't be a physical challenge, better if he has to overcome his "big ego". To work as a short story, I'd also like to get a better idea of what's ahead of him at the end. Some revelation of sorts, perhaps the dragon talking to him. This is more like a prologue, hinting at revelations to come. Finally, you need to work on your language. Start with paying attention to tense - you change between past and present. Also break it up into paragraphs for better pa...

This is an adventurous tale. The premise and plot are well thought out but some of the sentence structures are a little choppy making for difficult reading.🫤 Wish I could be more specific for you but maybe someone with more experience than I have will comment for you. Keep writing and I am sure there will be improvement.
