"Kelly the phone!"
"Coming." A teen girl with brunette hair ran into the kitchen fixing her yellow crop top over her waist-high jeans. Her hair just barely sweeping against the tops of her shoulders.
She glanced down at the caller ID and immediately her face twisted in disgust.
"Argh really." She started to walk away.
"Who was it?" Her mom walked in holding her baby sister.
"No one important." She sighed.
"Is Jessica still coming to pick you up?" Her mother looked at the clock.
"It's getting late and I don't want you out on the streets at night like this. Especially while wearing that." Her mom eyed the teen's outfit.
"What's wrong with what I'm wearing?"
"Honey, you need to be careful out there. Not all people are harmless."
"I know. I know. I'ma go call Jess to see where she's at." Kelly went to the living and threw herself on the couch.
Her fingers moved quickly dialing her friend's number.
"Hey, Kel what's up?"
"You would not believe who just called me."
"Wait who?" Her friend giggled in suspense.
"It was that girl Sarah. I swear she never quits. It's just getting creepy now."
"Girl you need to be careful with her. She's like crazy Obsessed with you. Like for real though."
"I don't care that's her problem. So where are you? You were supposed to be here already."
"Oh yeah sorry about that but I can't go tonight. My mom is having a full-on crying fest on the couch again."
"What happened now?" She sighed.
"You know the same old thing. She broke up with her boyfriend."
"Well, this sucks. Now I'ma be stuck at home. I even dressed really cute for today."
"I know. Sorry."
"It's whatever. Go take care of your mom I guess I'll just die alone at home." Kelly grunted into the phone.
"I knew you would understand. Bye!" Her friend laughed hanging up the phone.
"There goes my night." She pouted laying down.
"Kelly, Kelly!"
"Urg!" She groaned unwillingly making her way back to the kitchen where her mother was feeding the baby.
"Will you please just answer the phone it hasn't stopped ringing."
"Can't you answer it for me? It's that girl again." Kelly begged.
"No. I do not want to be caught up in your teenage drama."
"Fine." She huffed.
The phone rang again.
Brrring Brrring, Brrring Brrring
"Yes?" She answered.
"What took you so long? I've been calling for hours." Sarah whined.
"I was busy taking a shower. So how may I help you?"
"Well, I was wondering if you'd like to go to the graveyard with us. We are just going to hang out, spend the night, and try to talk to ghosts. You in?"
"Who do you mean by 'us'?" She questioned her suspiciously.
"It's basically everyone from our science class."
"Yeah, I don't know. Ghosts really aren't my thing."
"Oh come on. It's not like you have anything better to do."
"Guess you're right. I am already dressed."
"Cool. I'll pick you up now."
"Y-yay can't wait." She tried to sound excited.
"Kay bye!"
She hung up the phone feeling a bit off. Sarah was the last person she wanted to hang out with. There's nothing wrong with her. It was just that she can sometimes be a bit too much to handle. Especially when it has anything to do with Kelly. She helped her out once a long time ago and since then the girl has stuck to her like gum. There were even some rumors that Sarah had pictures of Kelly in her locker.
"But who knows, maybe they are all just rumors." She thought to herself.
Bzzzzt
Her phone vibrated.
Sarah texted her "I'm here."
"Wow, that was fast." She thought to herself.
She threw the thought to the back of her mind. Telling herself that maybe she was just overthinking it.
"Mom I'm leaving!" She grabbed her phone stuffing it in her pocket.
"Be safe!"
"I will." She ran outside to see Sarah walking up to her driveway.
The girl wore a pastel purple shirt underneath a white sundress. Kelly couldn't help but stare as she recognized her outfit. She swore that Sarah wore that same outfit to school yesterday. From her hair that was clipped up on both sides, down to her shoes. But what caught her eye was the fact that Sarah was standing in her driveway with no car in sight.
"Um, where's your car?"
"I thought it'd be fun to walk there together since it's not too far from here." Sarah smiled brightly.
"See if I knew this, I would've said no." Kelly was unamused.
"Oh come on." She hooked her arm with Kelly's. Dragging the girl with her down the street.
Kelly felt uneasy. Something just didn't feel right. It was almost like she could sense something bad was going to happen. That it was lurking around every corner. Just waiting for them to let down their guard.
"Why is she so cold? It's 80 degrees outside." She wondered to herself.
"Look there it is!" Sarah jumped in excitement running full force towards the entrance.
"Hey slow down. You're gonna pull my arm off." She yanked her arm out of the girl's grip.
"Oops sorry."
"So we're here. Where is everyone else?" Kelly looked around the graveyard that hosted an especially eery aura.
It was the way the moonlight glowed against the tombstones. Bouncing off the graves where the dead had been settled. There was a chill in the air that made Kelly's palms moist with fear.
"I don't know about spending the night here. Maybe this was a bad idea." Kelly's heartbeat quickened.
"Don't be such a baby. What? Is Kelly scared of ghosts?" She mocked her.
"I-I'm not."She tried to stand tall.
"Are you worried you'll get possessed by an evil spirit? Oooooooo!" She laughed at her frightened friend.
"Stop it. That's not funny. Stuff like that actually happens you know." Kelly fumed. Her patience for the girl was wearing thin.
"I'm just joking. No need to be upset. Plus if anything tries to hurt you I'll be there to protect you."
"Oh yeah? And how do you plan on doing that?" She sassed. Wishing she was at home instead of in a creepy graveyard with a creepy girl.
"I know many warding off chants and I also have talismans to protect us." She smiled proudly.
"You do?"
"Yeah of course I do." Sarah jumped up on a tombstone to sit.
"You do know that you're like crazy weird right?" Kelly laughed feeling a bit more at ease.
"Yeah." She shrugged kicking her feet against the stone.
"Can I ask you about something super awkward?" Kelly leaned against the stone next to Sarah.
"Go for it."
"You have heard the rumors right? You know, about you being obsessed with me."
"What?" She stopped kicking her feet as her smile fell.
"I know it's crazy but the guys at school think that you're like crazy obsessed with me. They even say that you have pictures inside your locker of me." Kelly laughed at the absurd notion.
"Who would ever be stupid enough to believe in all that? I swear the things people will do for attention." She laughed to herself.
"How?" Sarah's voice cracked.
"How what?" She looked up to see Sarah turning pale white.
"Sarah?"
"How did they know? No one was allowed in my locker! So how did they know?" Sarah gripped the stone she sat on.
"W-what are you-" Kelly backed away. Feeling that sense of danger again sweep around her.
"No one knows how to keep their mouths shut do they." She hopped off the tombstone. Slowly making her way towards Kelly.
"N-no one else is coming are they?"
"Of course not. I didn't want them ruining our time together. I can barely get to see you during school because of that damn friend of yours."
"What the hell is wrong with you?"
"What are you talking about? You made me this way. You kept pushing and pushing and pushing me away. You were friends with everyone else! So why not me? What was so wrong with me?"
"I'm leaving." Kelly dashed off towards the exit. Only to be tackled to the ground.
Her face slammed against the wet grass. Throwing specks of dirt into the air.
"You can't leave me too. Not you. Not you too." She held Kelly's wrists by her sides.
"Stop it! Let go of me! Sarah stop!" She struggles beneath her.
"No! If I do you'll leave me." Sarah cried. Her hands shaking as they gripped onto Kelly's.
"Why are you doing this to me?"
"Because it was only ever you. No one cared about me. No one even bothered to look at me. It was as though they all just stared right through me. Like I was invisible. Nothing but air. But then there was you. You looked me straight in my eyes and acknowledged me. You picked up my books and helped me find my classroom. You smiled at me and then you left. You ignored me and refused to answer my calls! Why Kelly? Why am I not good enough to be your friend?!" Sarah laid her head onto the girl's chest sobbing.
Kelly saw her opening. Right when Sarah loosened her grip she pushed her aside. Throwing the girl on to the grave next to her. She quickly got to her feet and ran as fast as she could. She waited till she was about a block away to stop and catch her breath.
"Maybe I lost her?" She told herself as she gasped for air.
She pulled out her phone and dialed. She tried to calm her nerves as the phone rang.
"Kelly?" She was so relieved to hear her mother's voice.
"Thank God. Mom please I need-"
"Oh gawd Kelly." Her mother cried.
Her heart sank.
"W-what's wrong?" She was scared to hear the answer.
"Oh honey. It's your friend."
"What happened to Jessica?" Panic set in.
"Nothing she's fine. It's about your other friend, Sarah."
"Sarah?"
"Yes. I'm so sorry that I have to tell you this but she died last night."
"W-what? No. No that can't be. She was, she was just here with me. She-" Her body went numb.
"How could that be?"
"I'm sorry honey but she's gone."
The hair on the back of her neck stood up. She could hear faint footsteps closing in on her. Her eyes widened in fear as she cried silently. Her feet frozen to the ground. Afraid to witness the scene behind her.
"How uh, how did it happen?"
"The police said that her father slipped a drug into her drink. She fell asleep and suffered a heart attack. That poor girl. Her father murdered her because he was tired of looking after her. They say that after her mother died her father was never able to cope with it. Oh, I couldn't imagine the things that girl must've gone through." She could hear her mom sniffle over the phone.
"Kelly don't leave me." An eerie voice echoed from behind her.
"M-mom?" Fear shook her body violently.
"I want you to stay with me forever. You're not leaving." Her friend's cold airy hands slither across her neck. Each finger finding its place right above her jugular.
In a shaky voice, she whispers out one last desperate message.
"Mom help me!"
