Despite the awful smell that had been spread across the gym floor, much like the blood of Taylor Humphrey, the music was still playing and the lights were still flashing but everyone was staring right at me and the dismembered prom king.

Earlier that night my friends and I were getting ready for the annual spring prom, our town was smaller than others and because if this our prom was before the end of the school year rather than later.

“Carly do you think I should wear an emerald green dress or a topaz romper, the emerald would match my eyes but the topaz would match Taylor’s shirt.”

“why don’t you ask him?” I replied

“because, didn’t you see his outfit for the winter dance, the colours made me look like an Oompa Loompa!”

“just wear the emerald then.”

“thanks!” she replied as she stuffed the emerald dress back into her closet, I rolled my eyes at her but didn’t pay much attention to her obvious jab at my fashion sense.

Later that evening Jessica and I were doing our hair and makeup preparing ourselves for the night ahead.

“do you thing I’m going to win prom queen?”

“why do you care, those girls are stuck up and only care about themselves.” I snapped

“well everyone’s been saying that Taylor is going to win prom king and if I’m not queen then he’s going to have to dance with someon-”

“ Jess don’t worry about it, I still think that you should just go with me it would be more fun”

“I know but Taylor already asked me out and I already said yes, besides this is our last year. why don’t you ask Ben?”

“ because he’s disgusting.”

“well that’s not what it says in your diary” I snapped my neck back and saw her holding the black and red journal in her hands.

“today in band Ben Seymour looked back at me and smiled”

“stop give that back!” she continued to flip through and read the pages.

“I wish I could tell Jess how I really feel, but I’m scared she doesn’t like me back...”

”I- Jess I can explain...”

“no just, just leave me alone” she ran out of my house and into her car, I didn’t even try to stop her.

I decided to still go to the prom even though I dreaded seeing Jessica. I met up with a group of girls I talked to and ate lunch with on the days that Jessica wasn’t here. we danced, ate snacks and drank punch. I didnt Even see Jess until they announced that they were drawing names for prom king and queen.

“Everyone quiet down, now it’s the time of the night where we see who is this years creek valley high prom king and queen, even though You are all queens and kings in my eyes. first up prom king... drumroll please! Taylor Humphrey.” everyone clapped as Taylor went up to the stage to collect his crown and a ten dollar gift card to yogurt land. “now we’re picking names for prom queen... drumroll please, Carly Mackentire!“ it was my name I didn’t move I couldn’t hear the clapping if there even was any, then I snapped back to reality and saw the principle waving me up to the stage. some people were clapping others looked disgusted as if they called one of the lunch ladies up instead, even Taylor looked disgusted but he was quite obviously drunk. “Alright people back to dancing!” announced the principal. “first I have something to say.” exclaimed Taylor. His words were slurred and he almost fell into the crowd. at that moment I saw Jess in the back of the gym, her face was red and she looked scared and embarrassed. “number one, Jess should have been queen and number two are we really going to have some fat dyke be queen?” My head started racing, suddenly everyone was looking at me and Jessica mouthed the words I’m sorry. my head was spinning and it felt like time had stopped. I couldn’t hear what Taylor was saying, so much was going through my head. “shut up” I whispered “shut up!” I kept repeating those same words quietly until “SHUT UP!” I yelled, everything stopped i Felt some liquid splatter onto me, I looked down at my dress and realized I was drenched in blood. Slowly I looked over at Taylor and the crowd, the front couple rows of people had also been covered by the blood. suddenly everyone Started to scream, cry and run. Once the crowd had moved I saw Taylors severed head in the middle of the gym floor. Had I done it? I thought to myself, it hadn’t fully registers that there was a dead body next to me, once it did I just started running. I eventually stopped near a creek that ran all the way across town. I could hear sirens, I didn’t know what to do. I was so preoccupied with my thoughts that I didn’t hear the footsteps coming up behind me

“miss you are going to have to come with us” I didn’t hesitate, I just walked to the black suv and listened for more instructions. After about an hour of driving I asked

“ where are you taking me?”

“to a facility we Just need to ask you some questions about tonight”

“what about everyone else?”

“don’t you worry about them we’ll get to everyone.” once we arrived the men instructed me to wait in this dark room for some questioning. a couple hours had passed by when they transported me to a hospital bed and connected me to all sorts of machines and wires

“miss can you tell me what you saw tonight?”

“well I was on stage and i there was talking and then it stopped there was blood everywhere and his hea-” I threw up on myself and the doctor told me not to worry and cleaned me up. I continued to tell him what I saw and if I saw anyone suspicious around the gym that night.

”alright, we are going to do some standard check ups just to see if anything‘s wrong“ they hooked me up to another machine and told me to count to ten, I only got to four before I passed out. I woke up a little dizzy and my father was sitting by my bedside. The doctor came in and asked if he could ask me a question.

“ what do you remember about the prom last night?”

“what do you mean?” I asked

“ the prom isn’t until tonight” the docter grinned and said “that’s all“ before leaving the room.

“alright hon, we’d better get going so that you and Jess can start getting ready for tonight!”. I smiled as we walked out of the hospital. I started to itch the back of my head

“oh doctor said no itching you might take out the stitches!“

” what procedure did I have again?”

“no procedures just check ups”

I shrugged as we entered my house where Jess was waiting for us on the couch. she was facing the opposite direction and I saw a quick glimpse of a bloody scar on her head, she turned and had a frightened smile with tears rolling down her cheeks.

“are you excited for tonight?” she asked with a shaky voice. that when I remembered everything that happened on prom night.
