When Paul and his wife Daisy went to bed in the evening there had been a blizzard outside and they hadn't thought much of it. Blizzards where a regular thing in Canada in the winter. Paul and Daisy lived alone in a small cabin in a valley surrounded by mountains. Their three children had all gone to have a family of their own and some of their grandchildren too and Paul and Daisy saw them a few times a year. They had home visits from licensed practical nurse three times a week to help them with various tasks such as bathing and bringing them their medication.
Paul woke up the next morning with stiff limbs and walked straight to the coffeemaker and started the day like he always did, by bringing his wife, the most beautiful woman in the world, her medication and coffee in bed. Daisy had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease a few years back. She couldn't do much first thing in the morning and was extremely tired, to the point where Paul had to force her 8 o'clock medication down her throat. Daisy was on a tight medication schedule as all people with Parkinson's are. When the medication was starting to kick in she could get dressed. Paul had to help her of course and together, with the help of her walker, they got her into the kitchen/living room. By the time they'd gotten Daisy out of bed it was usually lunch time, so Paul set on to making them lunch. Some days where better than others and today was a good day. Good enough to go out for a walk even. "Well my dear, what do you want to do today"? asked Paul while he was dressing them both for a walk outside in the snow. "Why don't we start of with a quick circle around the house"? When it came to their walks there was nothing "quick" about them, it could take up to half an hour for them to make it around their little cabin. "Excellent idea" and with a quick peck on her lips they began walking. when they had reached the back of the cabin they took a brake by the storage shed. Daisy peeked inside and with a wicked grin to Paul she said "lets go sledding". "Sledding!?", Paul couldn't believe what he was hearing "my love are you sure that that's a good idea"? "I have never been more sure of anything in my life", she said with a big smile. That was an exaggeration of course and Paul knew it. "Go get a sled for us my love, its in the shed. I will start walking up this hill while you get the sled so we'll be back by dinner", she said with a teasing grin. Paul had always admired his wife's ability to make light of situations such as her disease. He watched as his wife slowly walked up the mountain hill. He couldn't believe his wife.. but the again he could. This was Daisy before they got old and she got sick. not wanting to let his wife down he set off on his task of getting them sleds. He struggled with the frozen lock but finally got the shed open. Inside was a mess, but an organized mess. He knew exactly where the sleds where. The only problem was that one of them was too high for him to reach, tried as he may, he couldn't get it. With a sigh he decided that one sled was enough for them. When he got out Daisy was sitting a little ways up the hill catching her breath. It didn't take Paul to long to reach her even when she started walking up the hill again when Paul was half way to her. "So.. Ladies first". Daisy rolled her eyes at him "you know I can't get back up here again. Not today at least". "I know, I know it was a bad Joke. So how do we do this"? Daisy looked ad the sled for a second the said "you sit and keep it steady enough for me to sit in front of you". It took them some time to get the sled to stay still for Daisy to sit down, Paul wasn't young anymore and his knees ached from keeping the sled still. He also had to help her sit down since her limbs suddenly decided to stop listening to her. She had almost fallen right on her face in the snow if Paul hadn't caught her. When Daisy was finally sitting in front of Paul she asked "ready"? her voice was giddy with excitement and Paul sighed thinking what on earth they where doing. This could be dangerous for people their age! But in the end he couldn't disappoint his wife and said "I think so, just promise me to not get hurt". He could almost feel his wife rolling her eyes in front of him. She had always been sassy and he loved it. "Paul let's go we're not getting any younger here", she said with impatience "okay, here! we! go"! Paul put one knee up and was struggling to get his other knee up. They started to drift to the side when Paul finally got his other knee up. And down they went! Paul hadn't felt such thrill in years, his heart was pounding hard in his chest and only faintly heard his wife scream in delight as they zoomed down the hill. To onlookers zoom would not be the right word, more like lolled down the short way the had gone up the mountain. But to Paul and Daisy it was like being in a rollercoaster, even if it only lasted for a few seconds. They both fell off the sled in fits of laughter before they reached the bottom and watched as the sled went all the way down the hill with out them. They were laughing so hard that their stomachs hurt and tears rolled down their cheeks. When Paul finally got a hold of himself he asked his wife who was still in his arms "was it all you hoped it would be"? "Better" she said with a big smile, then kissed him. They stayed there for a few moments then noticed when a man in his thirties started walking up to them. When he reached them Paul realized it was their nurse coming to check on them. "Having fun you two"? he said with a smile and a laugh. He helped them down the hill and to their small cabin where Nick the nurse treated them to a steaming cup of coffee.
