Suspense Thriller Fiction

As I sat in the therapist's office looking down at my hands in my lap I told the story again. I was forced to attend therapy as part of my “recovery”. I had done some bad things. I had adjusted my dark glasses, straightened my beanie and sat up a little straighter to compose myself and smirked. I warned the therapist this would be a hard story to hear. I began.

~~

I am a lot older than I look but you would never guess how old I am.

I went to university to study history and legends but my expertise was in myths and legends. I am from Greece so all the stories and myths and legends I found fascinating and heard as many myth stories as I could. When I had heard about this so called old type building that was discovered deep in a forest somewhere about 100 miles from here I wanted to go. I told my friend Thena about it and two boys we hung around with, we were not involved in any way but I did like one of them a lot and so we made plans to go out there for the weekend to explore and I could use it for one of many essays I had to write.

Thena was in her very early twenties and she had a figure to die for, Percy and Si were the two boys we hung out with a lot and Si was the one I liked. Thena had a thing for Percy but Si had never noticed me in that way and it made me sad so Thena suggested that when we get to this place to explore we can split up into couples and I can get to know Si a little more.

I did some research on this place and it was old from what I could find, it was apparently owned by a man called George and I found his contact details and basically asked him if I could explore for an essay and do some research on the place. He agreed I could but only for the day, he gave me a key as it had been locked up to stop vandals getting in and said there was only one way in and out as the building had deteriorated somewhat over the years and I was to enter at my own risk. I did not tell him I would have friends with me until I showed up, he agreed to lead us there and open it for us as there were two keys and mine was for just incase we got locked in somehow. Perfect, just what I wanted.

DAY 1

The building was made of stone and it was more of a big house buried underground but it had been shut and closed off and the only way in was through a staircase that led into some kind of basement and you would access the house that way, obviously the door was locked and that’s what they key was for but I wouldn’t need it. Not yet anyway. We had spent the day exploring and it had started to get dark, Thena complained about the old man being creepy and I just rolled my eyes at her and walked on towards the exit. Percy and Si were whispering something behind us but I couldn’t make it out I had just heard Thena giggle at what they said which made me a little paranoid. Patience I kept saying to myself.

When I reached the door to get out it was stuck or locked or maybe both. I called out to Thena to tell her and she started freaking out about it, Percy and Si both tried the door and it was absolutely locked and not stuck so they all turned to me to ask about if I had his number to call him but there would be no signal down here so how was I supposed to call him to unlock it. I felt the key in my pocket to make sure I hadn’t lost it but it was still there. Thena was becoming annoying with her screeching and Si was the one to comfort her and at that point Thena glanced up at me and I saw red, I knew then at that point that they were together and they were doing it secretly. Percy saw this too and looked at me as if to say now is not the time because he obviously knew but I waited.

Thena and Si were talking to Percy about how we were going to get out of there and what we were going to do for food and water but Percy was glancing at me occasionally to see what I was doing and I was standing there looking up at the stairs wondering if this was going to be worth it and it was. However, for tonight we would be staying while I think.

DAY 2

While they were asleep upstairs I made the decision to see If I could sneak out and just leave them there to rot, true friends they were. I had spent years with Thena and telling her about Si and this is what she does to me, damn her to hell. I did manage to sneak the door open and relock it quietly thank goodness and made my way to George but when I came closer to his place he ran out and shouted about what the hell I was doing as we had been reported missing the night before and why didn’t I let them out. I managed to get him back into his house to explain but instead I silenced him. I did not need him blabbing about where we were or what I did and I had to keep him quiet so I made him a permanent fixture of his house and stood back and admired what I did. Beautiful.

After a few hours the others had woken up and Percy found me still staring up at the door wondering how we were going to get out. Thena was complaining about being thirsty and starving to death so I offered to go look around the place to see if there would be any water anywhere, maybe it had rained and there was a puddle or something. I went with Percy as Si wanted to keep her company, gross, we had found the kitchen area and there was nothing that even looked like we could eat or drink it. Percy asked me if I was upset about Thena and Si and I told him what I thought. Hello, I had liked him for a while and Thena stole him so what do you think you moron. He made me mad so I unleashed my inner strength and made him a permanent fixture of the place too now, he fitted in well.

DAY 3

Thena had become sick and was coughing and spluttering. Si had asked me if I could go look around again to see if I could find some hole in the house where water or something had leaked through because he didn’t want anyone else to disappear on him. After I came back without Percy and was asked where he was I said we had split up and I hadn’t seen him when I headed back this way so he went off to find him and obviously didn’t see him anywhere. Even though he is right in front of your stupid face idiot.

Anyway, I managed to find a tiny little puddle by some stairs that led upwards but they had caved in so we couldn’t reach any higher. I found an old cup and used that to give Thena some but it wasn’t enough. Poor baby. Si was asking me how the hell we were supposed to get out of there as I had my hand held tight around the key. We were not going to get out but I was. Si went back to Thena and I went over to see how she was doing and she was not doing too well, she looked up at me and smiled and began to apologize to me about her and Si. She never meant for it to happen but it did and all I could do was just stare at the ground and nodded. I guess it worked out because after this there would be no men and Si anyway. Perfect.

Through the night I could hear Thena moaning and groaning and Si telling her to hold on, it seemed she had some kind of fever and was really sick, at least this one wouldn’t be my fault but at day 3 without food and water and her needing some kind of medical attention it wasn’t looking too good for her. Si had fallen asleep next to her and I put my hand near her mouth to see if she was still breathing, I checked on Si and he was out of it so I took my hat off a little and woke Thena up and when she saw it her eyes went wide and made eye contact with me as I smirked at her.

DAY 4

I thought about just leaving Si there but I wanted to watch his face when he found or couldn’t find Thena and there it was. Si began shouting for her around the place and I called for her too but obviously there was no answer. Si had always been the logical one and when I found him staring at the ground it amused me. He asked me where the statue in the corner had come from as he hadn’t noticed it there before and I shrugged and said it had always been there and maybe he just didn’t notice it before and he looked rough, he looked deflated and he was ready to give up and admit defeat so that's when I showed him the key to the door. He went for me but I held onto it pretty tight and pushed him over.

I explained to him how he made me feel and how Thena had been my best friend and how friends shouldn’t do what they did to each other and he deserved everything he got. He wasn’t happy and tried to rush me again but I held the key high and told him if he wanted to get out of here I would have to show him something first so he put his head down in defeat and agreed. I told him to look at me, really look at me and the expression on his face was one I will never forget.

DAY 5

I had to let my eyes adjust to the light once I came out of the basement and the first thing I did was throw away the key and destroyed the door from the inside, I had to at least make it look like I escaped through desperation. A few hours later I was sitting in a chair in the police station looking not my best I will admit but desperate times call for desperate measures so I had to look the part. I had explained to them about George and how he must of locked us in, they had gone looking for him at his house but they found nothing except the spare key which confirmed my story of being locked up. Phew!

They wanted me to take them there and show them what had happened when we were in there as the others hadn’t been found as of yet and wanted to know how in the hell they disappeared when I was “locked in” so I took them and showed them everywhere we had explored and looked but there was no possible way out, the only thing that stood out were a few stone statues scattered around but other than that there was nothing. I believe the official report was that I was a victim of a cruel joke and they had somehow pranked me into believing I was locked in when in fact they had a way out, but then where did they go. I knew where they were.

6 MONTHS LATER ...

The case had been put as a cold case because the other three still had not been found. The police just assumed that because of the gravity of the “prank” that the three had run off or disappeared so as not to get in trouble. I could work with that.

I was forced somewhat to attend therapy as part of my recovery and Id had enough so they told me I could make this my last appointment and I could move on and leave as this place brought back too many bad memories for me so I decided to off load on the therapist. She wasn’t sure if she should declare me insane or if I had just told an elaborate story so I told her that as this was my last session I would show her something very special and put her mind at rest.

I stood in front of her and removed my glasses but kept my eyes on the floor. I then removed my hat and heard her gasp and let out a teeny tiny scream. I raised my eyes to make eye contact with her as I watched her watch me and the look on her face when she saw snakes on my head was priceless. I watched her slowly turn to stone before my very eyes and I will never forget the look of horror and surprise on her face as I made her a permanent fixture, something to decorate the office with. Beautiful.
