As I stare out the window of my boyfriend's dark blue car I begin to think back to the news cast.
...Eight Hours Earlier…
I look at his face worried, his soft pink lips pulled into a line and curly brown hair matted to his forehead with sweat... He notices me staring and gives me the sweetest smile he can manage.
"We're going to be okay." He promises "The space station is only another mile away. " he says quickly and goes back to staring mindlessly at the road. The news cast pops back in my head... six hours earlier....
"Babe! Get in here!" I yell nervously as the Breaking News sign interrupts my show.
"Anthony! I'm cooking!" Will yells back.
"I don't care!... oh my gosh!"
"What? What is it?" He comes quickly rushing into the living room in only his jeans, as hot as he looks...perfect abs and all... I have to focus.
"Emergency evacuation!" I panic, I had just moved in... and now I have to move back out.
"Didn't they do this before?" He asks clearly annoyed.
"No! That was a drill... oh no, no no no. It's actually happening!" Will notices that I'm actually freaking out. His eyes go wide momentarily but then he quickly recovers and walks over to me. He puts his hands on my shoulders.
"Baby calm down. It's probably just a false alarm."
"No!" I yell panicked "they said the wall broke! The lamina's got out..." and suddenly I can't breathe...the room starts to spin...
"Tony baby calm down your having a panic attack!" Will starts to try to calm me but all I can think about is the lamina... the horrific virus that killed my parents and my twin sister turning them into..into creatures that were almost unkillable...the undead.
If the creatures got out that meant we were all as good as dead...well undead. The government of every country and continent have all agreed that the best solution is to move to the Second Earth Space Station or the SESS ...anyone else left would die...
......Present hour......
"You okay?" Will asks me for the one hundredth time.
"Yes... I'm fine." I say quietly. We pull up to ISSP (International Space Savior Project) main building. Will and I get out of the car and I'm too busy staring at the giant spaceship? spacecraft? I'm not entirely sure.
"You coming? Or you gonna gawk until they forcefully remove you?" Will jokes.
"Huh? Oh sorry!" I apologize as I see he's taken it upon himself to carry all our bags and he looks ridiculous. He has at least four bags on each arm and two backpacks on so I can't see the navy blue T-shirt he's wearing his tan skin is glistening with the sweat and effort of carrying it all. That almost takes my mind of the fact that we're about to go to space...almost.
"Here let me help you."
"No, no no. I'm good. Let's go to space!" He says with sarcasm.
The lobby is packed with people. The glossy white and blue floor is quite durty from all the shoes. Will sets down our bags down in the back by some benches. Tons of people are standing around. I think they're waiting to leave, no line in front of the desk, where a military officer stands.
"Mind signing us in? I gotta say a final goodbye to my car." He says sadly.
"Oh fine...but be careful, okay?"
"Yeah, sure." He replies and gives me a quick kiss before leaving. I walk up to the front desk.
"Hey! There's a line!" A big burly man yells at me.
"Oh! I'm sor-" but I'm cut of as he waves me off and point to the back of the... line?... far far back at the door... Oh.
I walk back and just then Will comes in.
"Ah man! That's a long line! Why they feel the need to take a census is beyond me." He pouts.
"Um, if they don't they'll have no idea how many people are on the ship." I counter.
"Fair point, but-" he stops midsentence glaring at the front of the line.
"What?"
"That guy and his friend are talking about us..."
"How can you tell?"
"They keep looking at us..." I can tell he's getting mad, but when I look at were he is looking, its the guy from before that I almost cut in line.
"Oh, him?" I nod toward the man.
"Yeah." He replies balling his fists, uh oh.
"Well I almost cut him in line... 'cause I didn't realize there was a line. He's probably just telling that guy about it." I explaine and hope he calms down. Which unfortunately he doesn't.
"So? That doesn't mean he can be rude..."
"William, please don't make a scene." I practically beg.
"Fine." He says but keep his eyes on the guy.
"Excuse me everyone! In order to get things going faster please use last names and numbers for family members also we will be adding another two tables. Starting here at this table and here at the third." A man in an army uniform says as coordinates the new lines.
"Yes! Were at the front." I exclaim.
"You're very excited for someone whose afraid of space." Will teases.
"Very funny. I'm just getting impatient." I nudge his arm and he smiles.
It takes two hours until we actually get on the ship. Signed in and ready, we walk in and it's unbelievable...I was told it's a low ground ship but its quite tall to me... it's huge and silver with numbers and SESS and ISSP painted on the side. The entryway looks like a huge plane hanger... a ramp at least five stories tall leads out of it. At least sixteen soldiers on each side making sure everybody gets inside. The lobby area is big and mostly undecorated. Two huge windows on each side. The halls are the same, but all the windows are dark and covered on the outside. When we get to our room Will huffs as he plops our bags down and flops on our bed.
"Will! Get up your sweaty!" I shove him he just grunts and rolls over.
"No...I'm tired."
"Fine but don't fall asleep, I want you with me for take off."
"Mmmf" he mumbles into a pillow. I smile at him and wait.
It takes until the next day for everyone to get situated into their rooms. So Will got to get his rest.
"So when is take of actually happening?" I whine.
"Tony calm down. The count down is right there." Will gestures to the clock on the window.
T-minus 15... 14... 13... 12 ...11... 10... 9... 8... 7... 6
"Oh my gosh! It's happening!" I squeal. I feel oddly excited for this. I mean space is scary in all but earth holds all my worst memories. So good riddance, I guess.
Will wraps his arms around me, his lean body bringing comfort.
"Are we going to feel it?"
"Hmm? Oh no, I don't think so. They said somethin about it not being very shaky." Will says.
"Mmkay" I say and lean back against him.
"Here we go I guess..." Will says nervously. A small rumble is felt as we take of.
