Emma Johnson always made her parents proud, her test scores were above 90 percent no matter what. She was athletic, disciplined, focused, and obeyed each and every wish of her parents. Emma was an only child, and since her parents were always busy with work, she was a bit lonely at home. After she finished her homework she would simply read a book or just watch any shows on TV. Emma's tenth birthday was approaching and her parents wanted to get her something special she would always remember. Finally, the day came when her parents presented her birthday gift.

She unwrapped the box and there lay an adorable golden retriever puppy, Emma was super happy and she loved the puppy. Her parents were delighted she liked the gift. That week was a holiday, so the whole week she played with her puppy which she named Toby. Emma had a blast with Toby, she took him for walks, taught him commands, played fetch and frisbee, and gave him a bath. She even went to the dog park with Toby. She was so excited that Toby was meeting so many new friends. She even taught Toby how to swim with her! She bought Toby many treats and many toys. But soon the week was coming to an end and the school would resume.

Emma who was usually happy to attend her school called Golden Prize Academy was now dejected that her holidays were over. She wanted to play with Toby more. At school, she kept thinking about Toby and was not focused. When Ms.Williams called on her to answer the question on the board, Emma did not reply. She just stared out the window and was thinking what would Toby be doing right now. Ms.Williams tried again in a slightly louder tone but yet again no response from Emma. Frustrated, Ms.Williams had to shout out a distracted Emma's name and ask her to pay attention. Startled by the loud voice, Emma turned her head to the board and told Ms.Williams she was sorry. Since they were just back from their holidays, Emma had no homework! So, Emma could play with Toby and take him for a walk. Though the next day, Emma was not that lucky since she had tons of homework. History, math, English, science, writing, oh how would she finish it all? As she was starting her math homework, Toby came and sat beside her, whimpering, which was a sign that he wants to play. Emma took Toby outside to her backyard and started playing fetch with him and forgot all about her homework. The next day she had almost nothing to turn in to Ms.Williams. Ms. Williams was very surprised, Emma never turned anything incomplete or late. She told Emma if this were to be repeated she would have to call Emma's parents. And this scared Emma a lot since she never had to face this kind of situation.

The next day Emma had to study for her test that she had the upcoming day. Once again Toby came up to her whimpering. Emma told herself she would just play a little and immediately return to studying. But unfortunately, she forgot again. The next day on the test she hardly knew any of the answers. When she got back the test it showed a 60 percent! She had never got a 60 in her life! Ms.Williams who was very concerned with this recent change in Emma made a call to her parents and told her how Emma was suddenly not doing well in her homework or her tests.

One day as Emma was getting ready to go to school, she packed all her books. She was missing one of her books so she went to go search for it. While she was looking, Toby slipped into her backpack. Because Emma could not find her book she zipped up her backpack and headed to school. Once she went into class, she opened her backpack and was surprised to see Toby in her backpack. Before she could hide Toby, all her classmates started shouting "Ms.Willams, Emma got a puppy to school !"

An angry Ms.Williams send Emma to the principal's office with Toby. The principal told Emma that it was not allowed to bring pets to school. Then the principal called Emma's parents, that night Emma received a big scolding from both parents for they were very angry Emma went against the school rules.

The next week Emma had an important history assignment to complete, she had to take a break from all the work she was doing. She went to get a small snack, but while she was gone Toby came in and started chewing and biting her history assignment papers. When Emma was back, she was shocked that Toby was doing this. While she tried to grab the papers out of Toby’s mouth, Toby bit her. She started bleeding! Her parents came in and put Toby in his cage, and wrapped a bandage around her hand. So the next day she got a zero on her project and was also excused from sports because of her hand.

When she came back, Emma received the very sad news that her parents were giving away Toby! Her parents told her Toby was a bit dangerous for a ten-year-old like her and could bite her anytime. They also told her that because of Toby she was getting lower marks and she was also not focusing in class as her teacher said. And with a lot of thought and consideration, they were giving Toby away. Emma was very sad, though she knew it was true that she was not doing well at school because of Toby. Emma started crying but realized it was for the best. Toby’s new owner told Emma she could visit Toby whenever she wanted which made Emma a bit happy. After that, Emma did very well at school, her grades were coming back to the usual and she was very focused. And when she could she would always visit Toby.
