My youngest son Jeremiah was born in late September of 1974 and I had to go in for my six week check up for him and myself. My mom came along with us so she could watch his brothers Ray age four and Daniel age two while I went in to see the doctor for both Jeremiah's part of the check up and after that my part of the check up.
When we got to the Doctor's office mom and I got the two older children settled down and looking at some books. Ray the eldest age four was not content for long and was climbing chairs, looking out the windows and whining he was hungry.
I gave him and his brother Daniel some crackers from the diaper bag which appeased him for awhile. I told mom there was more crackers for the boys she could give them if need once I was called back in for our doctor visit. For a time it was quiet with people just looking at magazines and conversing in low tones. A couple of other patients had been called in to see their doctor and some others had came out and left.
Ray seeing some people go in before me asked us why they got to go in first. Mom said because they were here first and it is their turn to go. Ray said yeah but they don't have a baby and they don't have any kids who are hungry. I told Ray to be still and go read some more books and that I would be going in pretty quick. Then we could go get something to eat. He sat down for a few more minutes looking at a magazine while we waited and talked to some other patients.
Ray bored with looking at books, climbed on my mom's lap and asked her if we could all go get a hamburger after we were done at the doctor's office. She asked him if he was going to pay for it. He pulled a quarter out of his pocket my dad had given him and said "Yup, I got a quarter and I can buy one for you too"
We all laughed and Mom's said that was okay she could pay for her own hamburger. Ray said "Oh goody we get to get hamburgers when we get done here. My mom said. "I didn't say that" Ray hands on hips, glared and said, "Yes you did you said you could pay for your own hamburger, so that means we get to go have hamburgers"!
Mom laughed and said Okay we could get hamburgers after we got done at the doctors office. About that time I got called back to take Jeremiah in to see our doctor. While walking back.
I heard Ray, say, "Oh goody they are going to see the doctor now so pretty soon we can get hamburgers when they come out again." My son Daniel was curled up with his head on mom's lap sleeping and I knew mom would deal with Ray's endless questions about everything.
The doctor office was small and when people talked loudly we could hear them at times. Especially if they were children. So every so often we could hear my son Ray chattering to my mom about things in a book or a bird outside and once about why some guy was wearing a funny hat.
My doctor came in and asked me questions about Jeremiah and how he was eating, and sleeping, checked his vitals said he was healthy and he saw no problems with his weight or growing.
After the doctor examined Jeremiah and said he was doing very well for a six week old baby, the doctor had me take him out to my mom and come in for my check up. The doctors office was small and my son Ray age four was full of questions and very loud.
I had gone back to the room for my part of the check up and was waiting for the doctor to come back in. I could hear my son Ray loudly talking to my mom who told him to be quiet. But he kept bugging her. He was not happy because I went back in to see the doctor, He wanted to go get hamburgers and did not like having to wait longer to go get something to eat.
Daniel woke up and mom distracted both my older sons by reading them a book for a few minutes. When she had finished the story; Ray again started asking her how soon before we could go get hamburgers and how much longer was I going to be in where the doctor was at?
I could clearly hear Ray being persistent with his curiosity. He said "Granny"why is mommy going back in to see the doctor? What is she doing in there? My mom told him to be quiet and it was none of his business. She tried to give him a book to look at. A short bit later Ray again loudly piped up and demanded to know why I was in the room with the doctor.
The waiting room had five or six other patients waiting to see their doctors. My mom told Ray "She is in there talking to the doctor and it is none of your business, be quiet and look at this book until she comes back out here.
About that time my doctor came into the room where I had been waiting for him and was talking to me on how I was doing and feeling and listening to my lungs and heart and taking some vitamins. When again Ray's shrill voice questioned my mom. "But what are they doing in there?"
My mom said; "The doctor is going to examine her, So never mind and hush, it is not your business now sit down and good." There was a short pause and then we heard Ray yell at the top of his lungs "GRANNY is my mom going in there to get pregnant AGAIN!"
I was mortified and my Doctors face was red and he was trying not to laugh as we both heard everyone in the waiting room roar with laughter.
