The moment arrived with a few million people, who were not sure whether to take over being in charge, yet it was most who were at a loss that were trying to.
Those that were in charge had no idea what they were doing, no way of knowing if they were doing, whatever it was, correctly, and even then, they were a group of misfits, formed at the last minute.
The bright, sunny skies were beginning to show signs of clouds, darkening along with day turning to night. It was apparent that most were either scared of their own shadows, were scared of the pending darkness, or were just lost and huddled alone in the corners of one large room.
Then a loud booming voice rose over the whispers and was commanding the attention of all who were there at the present moment, "Everyone here needs to become organized and put things in order." "We may be out of the woods for now, but the eminent danger is fast approaching which will show us what lies ahead for us in the uncertain future."
It was a sign that someone had chosen themselves to be a leader, more so the leader, of those who were lost or unsure of what exactly to do. I would have been the one to place myself as the leader, but I had been attacked recently and was only held back by my injuries I had sustained.
I, Larrie Jameson, was the one most had looked up to when we first fled the cities, which had fallen and so we ran, with the clothes on our backs and no hope or understanding of what had happened. It was in the blink of an eye, and was quickly causing panic and chaos, no matter which way we turned.
We started out in our group, if you can call it that, around maybe 2,000 souls, which after only a few blocks was minimized to maybe 500. Those at the rear of the group, were vanishing first, as the slower ones, mostly elderly, were gone and without a trace of their beings actually ever existing.
Then as we arrived at an intersection, that was when the transformations took place. There were many who looked up at the bright beam of light in the center of the street, crossing of Washbunt and Elmer's Glue Streets. They were either burned alive, or they were turned to a pillar salt.
As we advanced forward, those left were either running blindly, ran over by driverless vehicles or were flattened by falling debris and flying cyclones that covered the cities in blackened daylight, like an eclipse. It was frightening to see the person right next to you, be swept up or pulled from your grasp, leaving you with only their hand in yours.
Then the large moving objects that the UFOs plunged at us and made us duck and run, was like playing pinball and you causing the machine to go full tilt. You dropped, ducked and rolled, hoping you could escape this and manage to live to tell what had happened.
We were deciding how to go on and where to go, which was more pain than it seemed worth it. I was not sure what to do next, until the loud booming voice was heard. In that very moment it was this that made us aware that someone else had made themselves the leader of all who remained, and no votes were cast.
Then we were all looking around and at each other, wondering if things could not get any worse, we either thought or spoke it all too soon. Our worst fears or nightmares from adulthood that had been spawned in our minds as children, became a reality.
The moments ticked away on the clock and were knew that we had to outwit the very things that had materialized and that which would make us either stronger or cause our imminent demise. It was then that we all fell over, right where we were, dropping like flies being sprayed. We were knocked unconscious.
When we woke up, we had no idea that we fallen asleep or what happened. One by one we stood up and were shocked back down. We had an electronic charging device around our necks, all of us that had survived the last wave of attacks.
Looking over to the left, seems we had been paired off, one man and one woman to each team, or so we were told this to be the case. I was not sure how to make this go away, but the woman I had been paired with, was unable to speak loud enough for me to hear. She tugged at my arm, pointing to the device and a button that would allow me to hear her.
When I tried to speak, it was hoarse and not too loud. Then I followed her pointing finger and found the button she had tried to show me. I asked her, "Who are you, and how do you know all this?" She said, I am Jenina, and I have been watching the others to see who had figured out what these things were."
I then after pushing the button, this was the only way we could communicate. As I looked at Jenina, I noticed she was the young lady living in my apartment building only several floors down from mine.
We spoke some more and were able to establish how we had known each other before. We both blurted out, "Wishing we could have met under different circumstances, but alas this is the only way for those who are actually in charge of us now to place us together for mating."
I was not sure how I would or could respond to that notion. I was ready to lay down to sleep, when a rod surged and jolted me in the back, very hard. I was wincing in pain, then the rod surged and jolted Jenina, causing her to wince in pain and she screamed, a blood curling scream that left her not moving. I was looking at her, figuring she had been killed when she started moaning and moving, then as if nothing happened, she looked at me smiling.
"What was going on, and why did this seem more like a scene from Invasion of the Body Snatchers, where you lay down as you, the real you, and then you wake up as the alternate version of you?" "This was either a very bad nightmare like from Psycho, or it was more real than my mind would allow me to believe."
When was time going to come when I would be nudged awake and told to get back to work. Like being on a prison road detail.
But the moment faded and it was now, a large dark colored room filled arms and legs, and one huge balloon looking head peering down at me, like from the Wizard of OZ and the peering head had a large gapping mouth with no teeth and garlic bad breath.
I screamed.
